Chapter 1 Long Time No See

The door of the operating room opened again.

"Families, where are the family members?"

A man was convulsed and shot ahead in a sudden big stride. "How is she?"

Nancy asked with an anxious expression on her face. "Are you the patient's family member?"

"...No." The man went into a trance. "I'm her friend."

"Get the families over here quickly. The patient has just suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and is now being resuscitated. This is a critical condition notice. You have to be mentally prepared for that."

"What..." The man gasped.

"Come on, call the families and get them over. It's too late."

After hesitating for a second, the man snatched the critical condition notice and signed two words on it – Andy Green.

"Hey, why did you just sign it?"

Andy's breathing became hard and heavy. "I'm her youngest uncle."

Nancy was furious. "What the hell is the relationship between you? Her life is at stake, understand?"

Andy's back was against the wall, sliding down bit by bit.

He lowered his head, and his shoulder blades stiffened into a silent curve. His tears fell to the ground while being blown by the wind.

"She's the one I love."

Late at night, a taxi sped along on the open elevated road.

"Miss, those cars behind... have been following us."

Elena had been drowsy, hearing what the driver said, she was suddenly out of her sleep and turned her head. Several black SUVs were coming close.

"Sir, speed up. Go to the nearest police station, quick!"

"Miss, I, I..."

"Don't be afraid, sir. Here is downtown. They don't dare to act recklessly. I'm a lawyer."

Hardly had her voice faded away, the driver pressed a sudden brake, and the taxi was surrounded by several SUVs.

The car window was slowly winded down.

A pair of dark eyes were revealed. The eyelids were like knife-carved, the eye ends were sharp and narrow, and the eye light looked like the edge of a knife.

Indescribable palpitations accompanied by fear spread throughout Elena's body.

She unlocked her phone and quickly pressed three numbers – 911.

Just at this moment, the SUV's door suddenly opened.

A tall man got out of the car, wearing a black trench coat, which was simple and cold.

The lighter pattered and a faint blue flame came out.

The man lighted a cigarette leisurely. His long slender fingers knocked on the bodywork with a casual air, and he faintly looked towards Elena.

The driver's voice trembled with fear. "Mi, Miss, now... now what's to be done? Why don't you get out of the car? I have the old and young at home..."

Elena couldn't hear the driver's words at all. She saw the man walking slowly over and his face becoming clear gradually...

It was a face with extremely aggressive features, which was rugged and arrogant. He had a clean chin, thin pale lips, and dark sharp eyes.

Elena felt nervous.

The man stubbed out the cigarette and flicked his finger. The cigarette flew out in an arc. And then the man opened the car door.

"Elena, long time no see."

The man's voice was low and sexy, very nice but cold. However, what was even colder was his eyes, which has no warmth.

Elena knew clearly that hidden underneath this man's eyes was his bone-deep hatred for her.

She got out of the car holding her bag and moved two steps to the side defensively, trying to stay as far away from him as possible. "Long time no see, Andy."

If she remembered correctly, it should be eight years.

The last time they met was in the year of her college entrance exam when she was unworldly, innocent, and pure.

And he, too, was not like this, even his eyes gleamed with danger.

When Elena thought of the word "danger", her hand that held the phone was quietly pressed down.

Suddenly, the hand ached.

The phone flew in the air in an arc and fell on Andy's hand. And his other hand grabbed Elena's wrist and brought it hard into his arms.

She was caught flat-footed. When she did a double-take, she had already crashed headlong into his strong hard chest.

Elena's eyes were fierce, and she kneed up to bump against his stomach.

Andy was already prepared. His body slid backward first and then bumped forward.

Elena was pressed against the cold hard car body at once. The man's lips were close to her cheek, and his nose tip had a smell of strong cigarette smoke.

"Andy, what do you want?"

"What do you think?"

I spent four hours preparing a five-course meal for our fifth anniversary. When Jackson finally walked into the penthouse an hour late, he didn't even look at the table. He just dropped a thick Manila envelope in front of me and told me he was done. He said his stepsister, Davida, was getting worse and needed "stability." I wasn't his wife; I was a placeholder, a temporary fix he used until the woman he actually loved was ready to take my place. Jackson didn't just want a divorce; he wanted to erase me. He called me a "proprietary asset," claiming that every design I had created to save his empire belonged to him. He froze my bank accounts, cut off my phone, and told me I’d be nothing without his name. Davida even called me from her hospital bed to flaunt the family heirloom ring Jackson claimed was lost, mocking me for being "baggage" that was finally being cleared out. I stood in our empty home, realizing I had spent five years being a martyr for a man who saw me as a transaction. I couldn't understand how he could be so blind to the monster he was protecting, or how he could discard me so coldly after I had given him everything. I grabbed my hidden sketchbook, shredded our wedding portrait, and walked out into the rain. I dialed a number I hadn't touched in years—a dangerous man known as The Surgeon who dealt in debts and shadows. I told him I was ready to pay his price. Jackson and Davida wanted to steal my identity, but I was about to show the world the literal scars they had left behind.

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.

Nicole had entered marriage with Walter, a man who never returned her feelings, bound to him through an arrangement made by their families rather than by choice. Even so, she had held onto the quiet belief that time might soften his heart and that one day he would learn to love her. However, that day never came. Instead, he treated her with constant contempt, tearing her down with cruel words and dismissing her as fat and manipulative whenever it suited him. After two years of a cold and distant marriage, Walter demanded a divorce, delivering his decision in the most degrading manner he could manage. Stripped of her dignity and exhausted by the humiliation, Nicole agreed to her friend Brenda's plan to make him see what he had lost. The idea was simple but daring. She would use another man to prove that the woman Walter had mocked and insulted could still be desired by someone else. All they had to do was hire a gigolo. Patrick had endured one romantic disappointment after another. Every woman he had been involved with had been drawn not to him, but to his wealth. As one of the heirs to a powerful and influential family, he had long accepted that this pattern was almost unavoidable. What Patrick wanted was far more difficult to find. He longed to fall in love with a woman who cared for him as a person, not for the name he carried or the fortune attached to it. One night, while he was at a bar, an attractive stranger approached him. Because of his appearance and composed demeanor, she mistook him for a gigolo. She made an unconventional proposal, one that immediately caught his interest and proved impossible for him to refuse.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
