Chapter 1 Eyes on me

They both stared at each other for a while and then he smiled. He put his headphones back on his ears and relaxed in his seat more.

Then it hit him, he was flirting, and this was halfway.

He took his headset off, paused the song, and went over to meet her. he asked her, for her number and social contacts. she did give him willingly. and the tension bubbled more, the air was filled with the muse, it was the oldest magic in the world where the castor and the castle became one leaving the two thinking about what was happening.

Maria had seen him in the bus ticket queue. and she wondered how this brown boy could be this fine and not be arrested for occupying her thoughts

she knew he did not need to say a word then, he did not need to say a word now too, she wanted him, and from what she saw in his eyes he wanted her too.

and that was enough for her to create a world where only the two of them existed, a world of love.

She wanted him, but it was just infatuation at first glance and now She wondered if he was gay or straight.

She wondered if the connection was that of friendship, a thousand questions roamed her mind, Being the former of all or any of the comparisons in her head, she knew her chances with him would be zero.

But, what are the odds she thought to herself? Instantly she sprung to action. She made excuses to those in front of her on the bus line to get to him.

When she was behind him she settled and waited for her chance to make him notice her. This way it would be easy, she thought, and I would know if he was interested. As luck would have it, they were seated close to each other due to the bus ranking she had manipulated by jumping the line.

The bus stopped and a few passengers dropped, including Majid, he was going for an interview.

Not the regular job hunting he was going to show his art to a prospective client who had picked interest, and wanted it on canvas, Majid could not hide his excitement when he heard how much mr Jamie Lawson was willing to pay for his work.

He knew he was good, he has been painting all his life, first as a hobby then he started diving into it as a profession a couple of months back after dropping out of the university.

He learned how to draw from his mother who drew every and anything her eyes came in contact with, he had paintings of himself as a baby, it was one of her most priced possessions which she had refused to sell.

And as he thought about it, an urge to paint Maria had come poking into his heart, as he walked his left hand tapped furiously on his thigh, he tapped continuously like he could hear the thought playing in his head, all he wanted to do was bath maria in ink, let the wet brush take shape and paint the curves of her body, the more he thought about it.

The smile on his face brightened.

At the reception the young lady he met flashed him a smile of her own as soon as she saw him walking towards her, his smile was contagious and she could not help but feel at ease.

Welcome sir she said as soon as he stood in front of her desk, what can I do you for?

She asked still smiling.

My name is Majid Akbar and I am here to see Mr Lawson.

She looked at him confused and then he added.

I am here to see Mr. Jamie Lawson.

She smiled and said," Give me a minute.

She made a call and spoke to someone who seemed to be the boss, so he thought from the way she reacted when the line went through.

He waited patiently for her to finish as he scanned his surroundings taking in the architectural marvel around him, he watched the glass elevators moving up, the golden railings of the steps, and the mild decor which screamed luxury all over the place.

He thought about the owner and how lucky he would be, as he looked on she spoke breaking his attention from the beauty all around him.

You will have to take the elevator and go to the third first floor, the receptionist on that floor will take you to your destination.

Majid walked towards the elevator, and as he stood in it he took a deep breath, put his headphones back on, and closed his eyes.

He opened them back when he heard the elevator sound, announcing his arrival on the floor.

The receptionist on this floor was eager to take him to his destination she had stood up when she saw him and motioned for him to follow her, as she walked briskly towards where he fathomed would be the office of Mr Jamie Lawson.

they arrived at a door that she opened for him and waited for him to pass through before closing the door behind him.

This was a big office but there was no sign of Mr Jamie, it was a lady who was seated behind the large desk and her gaze searched his frame for importance.

Majid did not mind he walked up to her and stood, my name is Majid Akbar and I want to see mr jamie Lawson.

I know she said, your appointment is due in five minutes, please have a seat over there and wait a while.

When he is done, I will inform you. she said plainly.

Majid turned and went over to the well-decorated waiting area, there were paintings in every part of the office, and he knew he was in the right place, he could tell from the numerous paintings that mr Jamie Lawson was a collector, and he hope after today he would become a patron of his art.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.
