The Quest of Sapphire Crown Chapter 1 The Prince's Return

With the wind in his hair and fear in his heart, Prince Aric rode into the kingdom on his dependable steed. Months had passed while he was overseas negotiating a trade agreement with a nearby kingdom. But, he had to extend his trip after learning that his mother, Queen Eira, was sick. He had prayed for her recovery while spending weeks by her bedside. He had left for home as soon as he had heard that she was recovering.

He noticed a small group of soldiers waiting for him as he got closer to the castle. Although they appeared relieved to see him, something felt strange about them. They appeared to be expecting disaster since they were tense.

"What's going on?" Aric questioned as he got from his horse.

One of the soldiers responded, "Lady Danika. She's been creating issues while you've been away.

Lady Danika was a formidable noblewoman who had been promised to Aric as his wife. Yet to put it mildly, their relationship was difficult. Aric couldn't help but suspect Danika had ulterior motivations for wanting to marry him because she was crafty and ambitious.

"What sort of issues?" Aric enquired while feeling anxious.

The soldier responded, "She's been circulating tales about the queen's illness. Claiming that she shouldn't serve as regent until you return and that she isn't qualified to do so. Aric gripped his fists tight. Although he was aware of Danika's ambition, he was unaware of the lengths she would go to in order to gain control. To defend his mother and his nation, he had to act immediately.

Aric turned to the castle and stated, "I need to see my mother.

The soldier led him inside and replied, "Of course, Your Highness.

Aric could feel the tension in the air as he moved through the castle. Others were looking at him covertly while whispering in low tones. It was obvious that there was a problem, and Aric couldn't help but feel uneasy.

He was relieved to find his mother sitting up in bed with a flimsy smile on her lips when he got to her room.

She called out, "Aric," and extended her hand.

Aric said, "Mother," and ran to her side, and

She muttered, "Better," in a faint voice. "We appreciate your prayers and the healing,"

Aric experienced a weight loss in his shoulders. He could not bear the idea of losing his mother because she was the strongest person he knew.

"What's occurred while I've been away?" he inquired, settling down beside her bed.

Eira the queen sighed. "Danika has been acting inappropriately. She has been disseminating false information about me in an effort to turn the public against me."

Aric gritted his teeth as he answered, "I know. She won't, though. I won't permit her."

With a faint smile, Queen Eira remarked, "I know you won't, My kid, you're stronger than she is."

With his mother's remarks, Aric had a rush of pride. He understood that he owed it to his realm to defend it at any costs. The following few hours were spent in meetings with his council members and advisors as he attempted to assess the state of affairs without him. It was obvious that Lady Danika had been plotting and planning to take control for herself. Aric couldn't help but be indignant at her brazenness. How could she try to undermine the people's will and his mother's soft tones. They were talking about Lady Danika's actions and how she had been exploiting her position to incite opposition to the queen. Aric approached them, attempting to extract more information.

He said, his voice cool, "Excuse me. Can I ask you a question?"

He appeared suddenly, and the servants leapt, obviously frightened. They hastily made a bow as their faces began to flush with shame.

One of them said, "Your Highness. How can we serve you better?"

Aric continued, brows narrowing, "I couldn't help but overhear your chat. What more information about Lady Danika's actions can you provide?"

Before one of the servants spoke, the others looked tense.

"Lady Danika has been talking to individuals and attempting to sway them against the queen, Your Highness," she added. "She has been advocating taking over till you get back since she believes the queen is too frail to reign."

Aric clinched his hands as a wave of rage overcame him. Danika has no right to strive to overthrow his mother's authority. He was aware that he needed to stop her right now.

He remarked, coldly, "Thank you for your information. Please get back to your work."

Aric was left standing alone in the corridor as the servants hastily bowed and ran away. He inhaled deeply as he made an effort to relax. He was unable to allow his rage to control him. He had to use judgment and carefully consider his next action.

In order to address Lady Danika about her actions and demand that she stop plotting, he made the decision to speak to her directly. She was discovered by him reading a book while perched on a bench in one of the castle's gardens. As he got closer, she glanced up, a smirk on her lips.

She put her book down and murmured, "Aric. What am I owed for this pleasure?"

With his voice tight, Aric replied, "I want to talk to you."

Danika said with "Of course," her eyes glimmering with mirth. "How about that?"

Aric responded, "You know what about," as his rage began to flare. "You've been circulating false information about my mother in an effort to discredit her. I won't put up with that."

Danika adopted a stern expression. She responded, mockingly, "I'm sorry if you feel that way, Aric. But I'm only considering what's best for the kingdom. You are aware that I am equally, if not more, capable of dominating than your mother."

Aric remarked, moving in closer, "That's not the point. You're attempting to usurp my mother's authority and take over. I won't permit that to occur."

Danika got to her feet, her eyes burning with rage. "What are you going to do about it?" she hissed back.

"Aric, you're only a boy. You lack the qualifications to rule this kingdom."

Aric experienced a flare-up of rage. How could she treat him in such a way? He wouldn't allow Danika or anybody else to try to minimize him because he was the prince and the successor to the throne.

He drew his sword and said, "I challenge you to a fight. You'll quit your plotting if I succeed, and you'll vow allegiance to the queen and me. If you triumph, I'll relinquish power and let you rule instead."

Danika's eyes widened in shock before narrowing in resolve. She drew her own sword, saying, "Very well. I agree."

Their swords rang out in the garden as they fought one another. As he battled, Aric had an adrenaline rush as his muscles ached from exertion. Danika was a skilled opponent, but he was committed to beating her.

Aric could not help but sense that something was strange while they battled. Everything about Danika's movements and smile seemed too deliberate. He had a nagging suspicion that she had been organizing this showdown for some time.

Aric was ready to strike Danika fatally when Danika backed away, sending her sword clattering to the ground.

She held out her hands and exclaimed, "You won. I give up,"

Aric looked carefully at her as he dropped his blade. He didn't have any faith in her at all.

He turned to depart and remarked, "You're not fit to be my betrothed."

Danika said, her voice chilly, "Neither are you."

Aric experienced a shiver go down his spine. Danika's ambition had always been known to him, but he was unaware of her potential for harm. Aric could not help but sense that something wasn't right as he left the council chamber. Danika had been defeated by him in battle, but he was certain that she would not just abandon her goals.

He moved to the battlements of the castle so he could see. Aric could not get rid of the uneasy sensation he had as he left the council chamber. Danika had been defeated by him in battle, but he was certain that she wouldn't easily give up her goals. He was unable to lower his guard.

Aric was aware of where to go for reliable supporters when he needed them. He went to the stables, where Shadow, his devoted steed, was waiting for him. As he left the castle grounds on the black stallion, Aric headed in the direction of Winstown.

Kaida, a young woman who lived in Winstown, a little village outside the kingdom, was one of Aric's closest friends. Kaida, a blacksmith's daughter, was frantically rushing away from the oncoming blaze. At the sight, Aric experienced a wave of rage and sorrow.

Kaida urged her horse in the direction of the settlement, saying, "We have to help them."

Aric went after her while his mind raced with ideas of what might have started the fire. Was it a mishap? Or was Danika responsible?

Aric discovered that the situation in the village was worse than he had anticipated. The villagers were yelling and wailing as the houses caught fire. After getting off their horses, Aric and Kaida dashed for the nearest structure that was on fire. As flames tore at the walls, they discovered a family trapped within, huddled in a corner. Together, Aric and Kaida managed to smash the door open and rescue the family.

Aric couldn't help but feel proud as they brought the family to safety. To prioritize the needs of his followers over his personal needs was what it meant to be a leader. Yet, as they saved more and more villages, Aric started to feel uneasy. The flames had an odd quality to it; something didn't match up. The flames appeared to be too intentional and strong. It was almost as if someone had deliberately lit the village on fire.

Aric couldn't shake the idea that Danika was responsible for the attack as they fought to extinguish the fires and save the villagers. He couldn't let her get away with this since he knew she was capable of anything.

Aric and Kaida returned to their horses after the fires were put out and the folks were secure. While they were both drenched in sweat and soot, their resolve remained unshaken.

Aric mounted Shadow and stated, "We need to discover out who did this."

Kaida got on her own horse and replied, "I agree. But where should we begin?"

After some thought, Aric suddenly had an insight. "We'll continue on the path of devastation. Someone must have left a trail if they did this."

The two of them headed in the direction of the mountains after Kaida nodded. They rode, looking for any indication of the attackers as they followed the path of damage. They traveled for hours, being dragged deeper into the mountains by their horses. Long shadows were being spread across the area as the sun started to set. Despite being hungry and worn out, Aric and Kaida continued on with their mission.

They could hear voices in the distance as they went through a little canyon. They dismounted their horses and began to advance on foot when Aric gave Kaida the all-clear to keep quiet. They noticed a group of men gathered around a fire as they approached the canyon's edge. The males had a scruffy appearance, with scarred cheeks and soiled clothing. Their armor and weapons made it clear to Aric that they were mercenaries, employed by a wealthy individual.

Then he noticed her. With a wicked grin on her face, Danika was seated at the front of the group.

She got up and said, "Aric. I was unsure of your arrival time."

"How did you behave?" In an icy tone, Aric questioned.

"Me?" Danika pretended not to hear. "I haven't taken any action. A group of rebels hired these men to attack the village. These go by the name "Crimson Blades, I believe."

Aric became upset at what she said. He suspected that she was lying, but he had no proof. He couldn't risk a battle just now because his adversary was in front of him.

In a calm voice, Aric said, "I don't believe you."

Danika shrugged, saying, "That's your choice. But the citizens of the kingdom are already starting to doubt your capacity for leadership. They require a decision-maker who isn't hesitant to take the required steps to protect the kingdom's security and economic well-being."

Gritting his teeth, Aric. Danika was preying on his anxieties, yet he was unable to deny that her words triggered something in him. The weight of his duties as a prince had always been difficult for him to bear, and he was aware that there had been times when he had been unsure or overly cautious. Yet, he insisted that Danika not prevail. He would do whatever it took to keep his country safe since he had a duty to do so.

Aric remarked in a quiet voice, "I don't need your approval. And you won't be able to challenge my authority."

Danika simply grinned, something that appeared to be triumph shining in her eyes.

She said, "We'll see about that," before stepping back and walking away.

Aric watched her leave while clenching his fists demonstrating to the populace that he was a genuine leader who was concerned about their wellbeing. He was aware that he still had adversaries, such as Danika, who would do anything to bring him down. Yet he also understood that he had the people's backing, which was more potent than any army.

The weeks passed and Aric's standing improved. They started to refer to him as a hero and a savior who had saved them in their time of need. Cheers of admiration and respect took the place of the whispers of uncertainty that had previously followed him.

Yet Aric understood that he couldn't take it easy. He still had a realm to defend, foes to vanquish, and a mission to accomplish. Therefore, with his sights firmly set on the future, he started formulating his next course of action.

He was aware that if he wanted to succeed, he needed allies. He required confidantes and companions who shared his outlook on the realm. And he knew exactly who to contact. He rode out to the boundaries of the realm, where the wildlands started. He discovered the nomadic tribes, regarded by many as little more than savages, who had long resided on the outskirts of his empire.

Yet Aric noticed something distinctive in them. He observed a fiercely independent, powerful, and proud people that had a close bond with the earth. If he could gain their trust, he knew they could be strong allies.

After interacting with their leaders and learning about their traditions and practices, he got to work showing them that he was a reasonable and fair leader who valued their way of life.

It wasn't simple. Aric and his group faced open hostility from some of the tribes, who were apprehensive of foreigners in general. Nonetheless, Aric persevered in trying to convince them.

He was aware that he had to demonstrate to them how he was unique from the other kings who had come before him. He had to demonstrate that he was a genuine ally who would respect their way of life and seek to advance their interests.

Aric was ultimately successful. The tribes started to view him as a friend and ally they could trust. They swore allegiance to him and gave him their strength and courage.

Aric was aware that he was one step closer to achieving his destiny when the nomadic tribes were on his side. He had allies who would fight alongside him because he had gained the trust of the kingdom's populace. But, he still had one more obstacle to overcome.

Danika.

He was aware that she was still around and watching for an opportunity to attack. Though he had no idea when or where she would act, he was confident that it was only a matter of time. As a result, Aric waited with his hand on the hilt of his sword and his gaze fixated on the horizon. He was prepared for anything that might come his way and was determined to safeguard his kingdom, his subjects, and his future.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.

I lived as the "scarred ghost" of the Stephens penthouse, a wife kept in the shadows because my facial burns offended my billionaire husband’s aesthetic. For years, I endured Kason’s coldness and my family's abuse, a submissive puppet who believed she had nowhere else to go. The end came with a blue folder tossed onto my silk sheets. Kason’s mistress was back, and he wanted me out by sunset, offering a five-million-dollar "silence fee" to go hide my face in the countryside. The betrayal cut deep when I discovered my father had already traded my divorce for a corporate bailout. My step-sister mocked my "trashy" appearance at a high-end boutique, while the sales staff treated me like a common thief. At home, my father threatened to cut off my mother's life-saving medicine unless I crawled back to Kason to beg for a better deal. I was the girl who took the blame for a fire she didn't start, the wife who worshipped a man who never looked her in the eye, and the daughter used as a human bargaining chip. I was supposed to be broken, penniless, and desperate. But the woman who stood up wasn't the weak Elease Finch anymore; she was Phoenix, a tactical predator with a $500 million secret. I signed the divorce papers without a single tear, walked past my stunned husband, and wiped the Finch family's bank accounts clean with a few taps on my phone. "Your money is dirty," I told Kason with a cold smile. "I prefer clean hands." The cage is open, the hunt has begun, and I’m starting with the people who thought a scar made me weak.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
