Chapter 1 FACING

CHAPTER 1

LILY'S POV

"LILY!!" The sound of my name boomed down the hallway, startling me into action. I quickly dashed to the mirror, slathering on some lipstick and blush as if my life depended on it. Tonight was the night. I had to look perfect for the prom night ceremony, where the pack's most eligible bachelor, Alpha Gary, would choose his mate from a sea of women. I was nervous but determined to make the best of it.

Since I was a child, I had fantasized about being mated to the pack's most eligible bachelor. But as I grew older, I realized that I didn't have the courage to approach him, even though he was my closest friend. I would often find myself staring at him from across the room, my heart pounding in my chest, but I could never bring myself to say the words that were on the tip of my tongue.

"WITH A STANDING OVATION, LET'S WELCOME ALPHA GARY!!" I heard screams from the main pack hall and butterflies filled my belly.

My gaze roved over to the wristwatch on my wrist.

8:00 PM.

"It's time." I whispered into the air and walked out of the pack hall's female bathroom. My face burned with anxiety, my head dropped as I walked towards the door. Walking up to the door, I gripped the door knob and twisted slowly.

I stepped off into the open and paused, my gaze flickered over to the figure standing some meters away from me. My gaze beamed on Sarah, my childhood best friend, who, unlike me, had long midnight black hair, stunning black eyes and a glowing skin I had always dreamt of having.

I gawked in amusement at the gracefulness of her Sarah's purple trumpet gown, her midnight black hair was braided in ringlets. Her face was powdered, particular with make-up.

"Why did you stay long?" Sarah inquired, raising an exaggerated brow at her as I chuckled lightly, trying to cover up the fact that I was inspecting herself in the dressing room. Sarah smiled briefly, revealing her white set of dentition as she gazed at me, I flashed a smile at her.

"I was only making sure I looked gorgeous as usual," I boasted with a flip of my hair backward.

"Astounding to appease who exactly? Lily, when are you finally going to confess your love to Alpha Gary? Why not ask him to be your boyfriend before he is snatched away by some other girl," Sarah said as I chided with a numb look on my face, "I just don't know what to expect, where he would get angry or refuse?"

Her speech now brought back to me the thought of Gary, my first and only crush. He had and would always be my Romeo, although we were close, I found it hard to voice out my feelings before him, I liked him, in fact, I loved him, and I was going to tell him tonight, at prom.

That is my goal.

And I am set on achieving it.

"You have to tell him your feelings and tell him you love him, so he would mate you and mark you as his own, It is either now or never, and when I said never, I meant at the party!" Sarah said with a mask of seriousness worn on her face. I stretched an arm out and crossed it on Sarah's shoulders as we both continued to walk in the long hallway.

"Hurry Lily! We both know that you won't forgive yourself if you lose this opportunity."

The walk from the lady's restroom to the pack hall was short, but with the massive crowd of people in the pack surroundings, I coul barely walk with the crowd all around me. I could feel the quality of a thousand gazes all at the same time, I heard whispers and chuckles from my surrounding, but I now didn't care.

Once we arrived in the hall, I stepped into the hall, the hall was full of them; tall and commanding arrogant gentlemen and briskly imperious ladies. My gown had caused a stir- I hadn't been sure of what to expect. What I received were wide smiles and nods of encouragement from the ladies in the prom- and arrested glances from the men. I searched with my gaze for the view of Gary, but he seemed to be nowhere to be found. My eyes squinted- my concentration deepened as she searched with an eager gaze for any guy who peradventure looked like Gary.

A tap came from my back and I spun almost immediately, at alert, I looked at Gary, the blonde-haired guy with blue eyes, I felt a shiver at the view of him. At closer range, the effects of his face diminished not one whit- if anything, the impact of the strong, angular planes, decidedly patrician nose, his lips, long, thin and provocatively mobile were now even more pronounced.

His hair was indeed golden brown, thick and wavy enough to form large locks; the rest of him she had decided it was wise rather not to notice. His long shoulders hung elegantly with broadened chest. Anxiety pumped ceaselessly into my veins, I stiffened, not prepared to meet herself with such a handsome young man. My palms now immediately seemed to be covered in sweats, my neck hair stiffened with anxiety pumping ceaselessly into my veins.

"Hi Lily," Alpha Gary had said in the most romantic voice.

I watched as he dipped his hands into his pockets as I forced the first two words that had popped into my head out, "Hi, Gary."

He smiled at me, with that, a knot gathered in my stomach, butterflies gathered in it as my hands soaked wet with nervous sweats. "I have something to tell you." I volunteered to speak first, as he faced me and had buried his attention in me.

"What is it?" I questioned with an arched brow, I tried to spill out the words and feel free, but I feared what his reaction would be to her proposal. I made up my mind and tried to push out the words from the barrel of words I called my mouth.

The silence seemed to cause some friction as Gary cranked up, "I have something to tell you instead," I turned to him and had watched with delight the instant a thought popped into my mind, he could have wanted to ask me to be his girlfriend. I acted along as butterflies gathered the more in my stomach, eagerness was written all over my face as she gazed into his dreamy blue eyes.

"I just found my mate." his voice chimed as it echoed against the walls of my ear, shock enveloped me, his words had come as a bombshell, one that exploded in me. My jaw fell in momentary astonishment, I still couldn't gather the strength to talk to close it shot, the news had weakened.

I felt like my heart slowly breaking in half, and I could barely breathe. The butterflies that had been fluttering in my stomach just moments ago were now dead, and a wave of sadness washed over me. Gary had been my first and only crush, the man I'd dreamed about every night, the person I'd loved so deeply. And now, to hear him say those words... it was almost too much to bear.

Tears stung my eyes, I wanted to speak as the tears got loose, my eyes produced the liquid as if it had been pre-prepared. Shame now hung firmly on me as people in the prom were now looking at me as they all mumbled, I wiped the tears and ran off- off to wherever my legs would lead me to. I ran for the exit and went on, not even looking back as I missed a foot and was about to fall to the floor when a mighty hand caught my waist.

"Aah!"

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.

"Let's get married," Mia declares, her voice trembling despite her defiant gaze into Stefan's guarded brown eyes. She needs this, even if he seems untouchable. Stefan raises a skeptical brow. "And why would I do that?" His voice was low, like a warning, and it made her shiver even though she tried not to show it. "We both have one thing in common," Mia continues, her gaze unwavering. "Shitty fathers. They want to take what's ours and give it to who they think deserves it." A pointed pause hangs in the air. "The only difference between us is that you're an illegitimate child, and I'm not." Stefan studies her, the heiress in her designer armor, the fire in her eyes that matches the burn of his own rage. "That's your solution? A wedding band as a weapon?" He said ignoring the part where she just referred to him as an illegitimate child. "The only weapon they won't see coming." She steps closer, close enough for him to catch the scent of her perfume, gunpowder and jasmine. "Our fathers stole our birthrights. The sole reason they betrayed us. We join forces, create our own empire that'll bring down theirs." A beat of silence. Then, Stefan's mouth curves into something sharp. "One condition," he murmurs, closing the distance. "No divorces. No surrenders. If we're doing this, it's for life" "Deal" Mia said without missing a beat. Her father wants to destroy her life. She wouldn't give him the pleasure, she would destroy her life as she seems fit. ................ Two shattered heirs. One deadly vow. A marriage built on revenge. Mia Meyers was born to rule her father's empire (so she thought), until he named his bastard son heir instead. Stefan Sterling knows the sting of betrayal too. His father discarded him like trash. Now the rivals' disgraced children have a poisonous proposal: Marry for vengeance. Crush their fathers' legacies. Never speak of divorce. Whoever cracks first loses everything. Can these two rivals, united by their vengeful hearts, pull off a marriage of convenience to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs? Or will their fathers' animosity, and their own complicated pasts tear their fragile alliance apart?
