Chapter 1 Beijing, Here I Come!

@Munich, Germany

Vera Meier, 21 years-old, Chinese-German, and an economics-major student at one of Germany's most prestigious universities in Munich is currently prancing around her 18m^2 cozy little apartment at 1:30 am. She's singing and dancing along to some of her K-pop favorites, completely oblivious to how close her neighbors are to calling the police on her for creating such a commotion during their holy "Ruhezeit" (literally translates to "resting time", a.k.a. the quiet hours in Germany, in which people are legally obliged and strictly expected to refrain from making any loud noises). But honestly, Vera couldn't care less; she's going to Beijing! Beijing is her mother's home town, which she has yet to visit, let alone China. Actually, she has never been to Asia at all! Ever since her mother had suddenly passed away in a car accident 7 years ago, she had also severed ties with her Chinese roots and filtered out everything she could that reminded her of her late mother and all the precious memories they had shared. But now that she's matured, she's prepared to reconnect to the other part of her that she's abandoned throughout all those years; which is precisely why she didn't hesitate one bit to apply for an exchange semester in Beijing, once the opportunity presented itself.

Vera glanced at her dark purple Iphone 14 Pro Max that's sitting on her small, cream working desk in the corner of her room. Crap, she thought to herself. She'd better hurry if she wants to catch her flight! At that thought, she picked up her pace, grabbed all of her clothes and other belongings that she'd carefully laid out on her bed, and swiftly threw them into her gigantic, brown plastic suitcase. After 15 minutes, she was all packed and already out of the door. After a half-an-hour Uber ride, she finally arrived at the airport a little over an hour prior to her flight. She then checked herself in, rushed through the customs and security checks, and sprinted to her boarding gate. Fortunately, she arrived at the gate just in time, meanwhile some airport staff and several other passengers observed her struggling awfully to catch her breath, face all contorted and wheezing like a cat that's coughing up a furball. After having regained her composure, she proceeded through the gates and boarded the Boeing-777. A kind-looking flight-attendant greeted and showed her to her designated window seat, in which she quickly settled. Soon after, she found herself overwhelmed by excitement and anticipation once again. Although she's travelling to a completely unknown terrain, she was fearless. Her heart beamed and she couldn't stop grinning like a fool, as her eyes fixated on the view from her tiny, round airplane window. "Beijing, here I come!", she screeched internally.
