Chapter 1 Prologue

***A saying***

There is a saying that goes around about a kind of love that is impossible to find. A kind of love that overtakes your entire being, That type of love that can lift you up to the highest of heights or bring you down to the lowest of lows. The saying goes that the moon and the sun were once lovers, destined to be together for all time. And that in a jealous rage the stars cursed them to be separated for all eternity. They say the sun loved the moon very much, so much so, that the sun died every day just to let the moon breathe.

Even though they were destined to be apart forever, these two lovers found a way to be together. Can you imagine loving someone that much? It is such a rare and beautiful thing when you find such a bond with another. I am going to tell you a story. This tale is about the greatest alpha werewolf kind has ever known and about the woman I love. Now don't go judging it just yet. Yes, it may have a bit of romance but this is mostly about adventure and the danger we all had to overcome.

Believe it or not, the woman I loved didn't always love me. In fact, when we first met she thought I was a vicious beast. And honestly, I couldn't blame her for thinking that; I was a little hairier back then. And when she did see the man behind the animal, well let's face it, she hated my guts. But again, I couldn't blame her, I didn't understand that she was a strong-willed, stubborn, bull-headed, independent woman. I should have known what I was in for at the time, it is the twenty-first century after all.

I was wholly unprepared for what that would bring. I was young and very stupid when we first met, I believed I could control her, her actions, and her feelings, but boy was I wrong. She was a spitfire when it came to her loved ones, but that comes with the territory I suppose. What I did not understand was the trauma of her past and that was what ultimately lead her to those feelings of loathing.

We had to learn how to love one another while we faced the man behind her past and the woman that would decide her future. When two of the darkest forces joined together to destroy her, we had to learn to trust one another. And when we almost lost each other we learned how to open our hearts to one another.

But I suppose that's what makes this story great, it isn't some atypical romance novel. It's a real journey that two people had to go through to realize their faults and find their way together. I guess that's what true love, the real kind of love, is all about. Just think about the Sun and the Moon. The Sun was willing to sacrifice himself for the one that he loved...

Would you?

For seventeen years, I was the pride of the Carlisle family, the perfect daughter destined to inherit an empire. But that life ended the moment a DNA report slid across my father’s mahogany desk. The paper proved I was a stranger. Vanessa, the girl sobbing in the corner, was the real biological daughter they had been searching for. "You need to leave. Tonight. Before the press gets wind of this. Before the stock prices dip." My father’s voice was as cold as flint. My mother wouldn't even look at me, staring out the window at the gardens as if I were already a ghost. Just like that, I was erased. I left behind the Birkin bags and the diamonds, throwing my Centurion Card into a crystal bowl with a clatter that echoed like a gunshot. I walked out into the cold night and climbed into a rusted Ford Taurus driven by a man I had never met—my biological father. I went from a mansion to a fourth-floor walk-up in Queens that smelled of laundry detergent and struggle. My new siblings looked at me with a mix of fear and disgust, waiting for the "fallen princess" to break. They expected me to beg for my old life back, to crumble without the luxury I’d known since birth. But they didn't know the truth. I had spent years training in a shark tank, honing survival skills they couldn't imagine. While Richard Carlisle froze my trust funds to starve me out, my net worth was climbing by millions on an encrypted trading app. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves. They didn't realize they were just letting me off my leash. As the Carlisles prepared to debut Vanessa at the Manhattan Arts Gala, I was already making my move. "Get dressed. We're going to a party."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
