The lost wife

It all started like any other day.

Darren woke up to his second alarm 6.45am. He had just over an hour before he had to leave for work, he turned over looking for Grace but the bed next to him was empty and didn’t look like it had been slept in at all.

Grace so often fell asleep at her desk nowadays since the promotion. Darren stretched and went to get ready, he made his way down the corridor to the office, the light was on and the door slightly ajar. Darren opened the door and peered in expecting to see Grace with her head on the desk but the chair was empty, the laptop screen was off and the half full coffee cup was freezing cold.

Darren made his was downstairs when a breeze coming from the living room caught his attention, as he made his way to the living room he could see the front door was wide open. Darren thought this was strange as he scanned the neighbourhood outside. Mrs Myers was up getting the kids ready for school. Mr Bishop was out on his morning run but there was no sign of Grace out there. Darren went to the kitchen and put a fresh pot of coffee on to brew and picked up his phone. Maybe Grace had nipped to the shop or there was an emergency. Darren dialled Grace’s number and heard her phone ring from the garage. Darren walked to the garage saw Grace’s phone and keys on the floor but no sign of Grace. The feeling of dread and nauseous spread through Darren as he dropped to his knees in the garage. He stayed there for what seemed like forever until his phone ringing in his hand broke the trance.

‘Hey Darren, where are you man the meeting has started and we are all waiting for, Paul does not look happy dude’

‘Matt, is that you?’

‘Yeh Darren, dude what’s wrong you don’t sound to good?’

‘Tell Paul to start the meeting without me I won’t be there today’

‘Darren you could loose your job for this your already an hour late. What’s going on?’

‘Listen Matt, I don’t know what to say or how to explain it but Grace she’s not here man I think she’s missing’
