A Fangirl's Love: An Eternal Guiding Light Chapter 1 An Unexpected Loss

CHAPTER ONE - AN UNEXPECTED LOSS

Ria sat in her room, crouched over her desk, and focused on her sketchbook, her pencil moved across its pages. She was a girl whose world revolved around her art. It was her favorite thing to do besides listening to music.

Suddenly, she heard the loud ring of the house phone operating through the peaceful silence. Ria flinched out of shock, her pencil slipping and leaving a long, dark line across her sketch. She frowned, annoyed at the interruption. The phone rang again, its sound echoing through the house and reaching her ears loudly as the doors to her room were wide open.

Ria sighed, pushing her chair back and making her way downstairs. She wondered why no one answered the phone then she remembered that the butler and maids were given a day off. Her parents were out for the evening, leaving her alone with the old man who should be sleeping by this time or resting in his room.

She picked up the phone on the third ring, "Hello, Zevon residence."

The voice on the other end was filled with a great sense of urgency which made Ria scared and filled with terror. She listened to the person on the other end talk, her hand gripped the phone tighter with each word he said, and she became scared. The sketchbook, the comfort she had, the peaceful evening, everything faded into the background.

Her parents... there had been an accident.

Ria felt her knees go weak, the phone slipping from her hand. She sank to the floor, her mind distorted with thoughts and emotions. Her loving and peaceful world had just shattered.

"Ria?" The voice of her grandfather broke through her thoughts. The ringing of the phone must have woken him up and made him come out of his room. He looked at Ria, his face full of concern. He picked up the good phone which had slipped from Ria's hand and listened to the voice speak. He hung up the phone after listening, his heart was now filled with grief.

"Grandpa..." Ria looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears.

He pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. His voice was choked and sorrowful as he whispered to her ears, "It's okay, sweetheart. It's okay."

The old grandfather clock chimed, marking the beginning of her sorrows. Ria was no longer just a teenager engrossed in her art and showered with love from her parents. She was now a girl with her grandfather as her only family.

She was only seventeen, in her last year of high school. Her parents had shown her a lot of love and care, they scored her a lot.

Before they had left, she had seen them off, she did not expect it would be the last time she would see them.

With a heavy heart, she went up the stairs, her mind filled with the harsh reality of the sudden death of her parents. Her world had shattered at that moment and she felt like she was drowning in a sea of despair. She pushed open the door to her room, the familiar scent of rose and vanilla doing nothing to soothe her shattered spirit.

She lay on her bed, the soft fabric of her comforter doing little to comfort her. Tears streamed down her face, soaking the pillow beneath her. Her sobs echoed through the room, the only sound in the silent room.

Suddenly, she heard a soft melody echoing through the room. She lifted her head, her tear-streaked face reflecting confusion. The sound was coming from her phone, a notification from a music app. The new song from a newbie K-pop group she decided to follow had just been released.

Captivated, she wiped her tears and reached out for her phone. She played the song and the room was suddenly filled with a comforting melody. The song was a ballad, the lyrics speaking of loss, and pain, but also hope and resilience.

"Even when the rain falls, and the darkness swallows everything, remember that the dawn will come, and the sun will shine again," the lyrics echoed in her room, piercing through her shattered heart. The voice of the singer acting as a cushion to her sorrows.

She listened, and her tears subsided slowly as she immersed herself in the song. The lyrics resonated with her current situation, the words seemed to give her warmth, offering solace and comfort in her time of grief.

It reminded her of one of her favorite songs "Our dawn is hotter than day" by seventeen.

The song spoke of the anguish of losing a loved one, but it also spoke of the strength to move on with life despite it.

It was as if they were there with her, comforting her.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.
