Durban University College Garden was known for its exquisite views. It was very common among the students here because of the events that took place from the picnics to the music shows, and also movie nights.
The College Garden had an immense oasis with variety of flowers, trees and bushes. It was also well known for its large grey stone fountains that runs sparkling water from top to bottom. In between the tulips, contained benches for students to sit and carry out various activities.
Kate Andrew was not left out of this beautiful scenery she often came here to clear her mind but this night was different she had something to say. Walking through the pavements of the gardens, she takes a deep breath observing the beautiful flowers. She held hands with her college lover Jay who she had been with since her second year in college.
"Do you think we would ever get married"?? Kate asks as she stops dead in her tracks. Jay did not understand why she would ask such a question out of the blues was she suspecting anything he thought to himself.
"Of course we would get married, don't be silly". Jay replies to her question as he pushes her towards him and hugs her.
Tears slowly crept towards her cheeks she really wanted to believe that he was going to be by her side no matter what happens between them. She wanted so hard to trust that he was not going to leave her but fight for their love. Slowly, she takes her seat on one of the garden seats, with her head to the ground she says three words that Jay did not think he was ever going to be ready for.
"I am pregnant". Kate says between sobs. Jay was utterly speechless. He had plans and he was not going to let her ruin it. "What do you mean by pregnant"? "That night couldn't have done anything".
Kate couldn't believe her ears, did he just ask her how she was pregnant. Emotions started building up inside of her, her lips began to tremble as she felt a spike in her temperature. All those things she read in books about heartbreak was it really going to happen to her?. No she couldn't bare the thought of it. She was twenty years old for heavens sake. She tried to control the spring of tears falling down her cheek but it just wouldn't stop. Hoping it was just a dream she holds Jay's hands and looks straight into his eyes.
" You aren't going to abandon me right"? She asks hoping he was just asking about the pregnancy for the sake of clarity. He let's go of her hands and gives her the reply he thought would be the best to avoid this crazy situation.
"It's not mine you are mistaken, you think I would sit down and let you lie to me. I should have known you were a cheat right from the start". He scoffs as he takes two steps back.
Powww!!! She lands a slap to his face. She was not going to let him downgrade her in such manner. The young guy she fell in love with wasn't the one standing in front of her. He had changed drastically but she decided to avoid it. First of was the distance he gave her, she should have been smart but life had to teach her the hard way.
" Well it is your loss not mine". Those were his last words as he left her sight. She could not bear to watch him go just like that as she immediately felt weak and fell to the ground as placing her hands on her stomach. She felt her mouth become dry and her throat blocked that she couldn't call his name. This College Garden ignited love between students, but this seemed to be her nightmare.
Weeks later, was the Convocation Ceremony where students were awarded their college degrees for the completion of their course. It gave them the opportunity to move into another phase of life. It was a joyous day for everyone but Kate seemed to have lost it. A bright and sunny morning, backed up with shouts from every corner of the college. Music flooded her ears as she foolishly searched all around for Jay hoping to find him to apologise after all it's his child she's carrying. What played in front of her she couldn't have imagined in her wildest thoughts.
Why did life have to be so cruel to her?. Was it wrong to love?. How could she have been so stupid to believe every word he said. She felt her throbbing heart shattering to pieces. She was so full of anger and regrets. Just as Kate was about to march towards the scene that laid before her eyes. She felt a hand against her shoulders. She seemed to have mastered the texture of the persons palm. Without checking to confirm if her senses were right, Kate fell into a deep hug with the individual. She was right. It was her mother.
Uncontrollable streams of tears came pouring, the weather seemed to be controlled by Kate's emotions. As the cloud darkened and it started drizzling. The music stopped, and lots of grumbling was heard as everyone rushed into the comfort of the auditorium. But Kate couldn't move she felt her whole world crumbling down. Was being pregnant or sin?. The blame was all on her. Now she was a laughing stock. How would she explain to her mother who had suffered so much to give her the best that she was going to be single mother.
Mrs Andrew, had not seen her child so heartbroken ever since Kate lost her twin brother. She didn't know what to do and she could not ask questions it just wasn't the right time. She hoped to see a happy person ready to leave college, but it seems it was not going to happen. Pulling Kate out of the hug which, she looked into her daughter's straight eyes and patted her hair that had become wet because of the drizzled rain.
"No matter what it is, do not let it spoil your day ". Mrs Andrew whispers in her ear as she gives her daughter a kiss. Seeing her mothers sympathy, Kate tries to give her a reassuring smile. When she discovers that she was more stable to move about she holds her hand and together they go into the auditorium.
The award ceremony had already started. The college students were made to sit according to their various departments. She studied business administration and so did Jay. As she saw him, she was totally disgusted. But right now, she was going to get her award and deal with him later. The convocation ended on a loud note as people started flashing their cameras all around hoping to take the perfect shot. She took a few pictures with her mother but her mind was disturbed by the scene she had encountered while looking for Jay. Just as she was about to take couple of more pictures with her course mates. She met with her...
"Congratulations sister ". Kate's step sister, Jade rushed towards her to give her a hug but before she could touch her. Kate had landed her a resounding slap.
" How could you" Kate roars. The weeping could no longer continue. It was all anger..
