Chapter 1 I

My name is Sofía Miller, I'm 18 years old and I've lived in Spain since I was 15, my country of origin is Venezuela. The economic situation in my country made my mother and I move to Palma de Mallorca. I admit that it was difficult to adapt to this country and the new people. Today, like every day I had to go to school, my alarm went off at six fifteen in the morning. I went to my mother's room to see if she was still at home, but as always she was working. With melancholy I left his room and went to the kitchen to prepare my breakfast, toast with butter and a fried egg.

I went to the bathroom to clean up and then put on jeans, a white shirt and my Air Force.

When I was ready, I left my apartment to go to school. I was leaving the house about three days ago and I felt like someone was watching me, although I looked everywhere and didn't see anyone suspicious, I knew they were following me, or at least that's what I felt. When I arrived at school, I was a little late. When I entered my room, the first thing I saw was my best friend, he looked very different. He had dark circles under his eyes, he looked like he had been crying all night and this was accompanied by a face that looked like he hadn't slept at all. Ever since I met him, I have worried about him. I walked quickly so that the teacher wouldn't scold me for being late and at the same time talk to Alex.

-What's wrong with you? I asked him after sitting down.

-My mother, yesterday we went to the doctor and they detected a tumor. I need a huge amount of money to do all the tests, and not only that, also for the treatment. I am sincerely sorry that everything is wrong. -He told me and let out a sob.

-I'm sorry, don't be like that, together we will find a solution, as we always do. -I told him and gave him a smile.

-I don't think there is an easy solution, I want to be alone, I won't go to your house after school to do my science homework, I don't feel in a good mood. -He told me and I frowned, it was the first time he treated me so badly.

I tried not to pay attention to him all day. I ate lunch alone in the cafeteria and then went home alone. Something very strange was happening, to distract myself a little I put a movie on Netflix and ordered a vegetarian pizza for delivery. If Alex didn't want to come and do the project, I wouldn't do it just so he could get points that weren't his. It was obvious that the bad treatment he gave me also bothered me. Without realizing it I fell asleep, the sound of my mother's door and keys woke me up.

-I thought you would already be sleeping in your room, Sofia. -My mother told me, she seemed surprised.

-No, I started watching a movie and fell asleep. -I replied, narrowing my eyes.

-Did you do the science project? -My mother asked.

-No, I don't want to talk about it either. -She told him.

-Aren't you going to explain to me? -He asked me and I answered just because I wanted to vent.

-I arrived at class and Alex looked different. It turns out that his mother had a tumor, I tried to comfort him and said that we would find a solution. For the first time, he responded horribly and said he wouldn't come home to do the project and that I wouldn't do it alone. -I told him as I walked to my room dragging my sheet.

-It's not good for you to judge people, Sofia, maybe she feels really bad for her mother. -My mother told me.

-No, I felt very bad about many things throughout my life and I never treated him badly because of it, people have to know how to control their emotions. No one has to put up with mistreatment from anyone. -I responded angrily and locked myself in my room.

-Don't worry about me Sofia, I wanted to let you know that I won't be able to spend the weekend with you. I agreed to go to a hotel on the beach with a man I met on Tinder. -He said outside my room.

-I do not care!

-Whenever you have to stay with me you come up with other damn plans, or rather, you raise her so she doesn't stay with me. What kind of mother are you? - I shouted at him leaving the room, from the expression on his face he seemed happy to leave and not stay with me. I grabbed my keys and left the apartment. My intention was to go to my best friend's house.

-Where are you going? -I wonder.

-You're not interested, why don't you go write to men on Tinder? They are more important than your own daughter. -I responded angrily and then left.

Already in the elevator the tears started to come, I didn't deserve the bad treatment my mother gave me, just when I thought that since it was the weekend I would have time for myself, I was completely disappointed. My mother works in a bar, as a waitress, according to her, but from the smell she smells every time she comes home, I know she is dedicated to something else. My life hadn't been easy at all, my mother wasn't in love with my father and didn't even love him when she got pregnant with me, most of the time I think I remember, well, I was an accident, something that wasn't planned. For this same reason my father decided not to take care of me and although most of the time I pretend it doesn't hurt, it's something that I still can't heal within myself.

The elevator doors opened, making me stop thinking about the things that hurt me, for the fifth time in a week the feeling that someone was following me continued. Before leaving the building I looked everywhere, but I didn't see anyone, so I thought it was just me. I walked to the other side of the street where there were always one or two taxi drivers, I wanted them to take me to my best friend's house. When I finished crossing the street, I heard footsteps behind me, and before I could turn around to see who it was, they put a cloth over my face and five seconds later I saw everything white.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.

For four years, I traced the bullet scar on Chace’s chest, believing it was proof he would bleed to keep me safe. On our anniversary, he told me to wear white because "tonight changes everything." I walked into the gala thinking I was getting a ring. Instead, I stood frozen in the center of the ballroom, drowning in silk, watching him slide his mother's sapphire onto another woman's finger. Karyn Warren. The daughter of a rival family. When I begged him with my eyes to claim me, to save me from the public humiliation, he didn't flinch. He just leaned toward his Underboss, his voice amplified by the silence. "Karyn is for power. Ember is for pleasure. Don't confuse the assets." My heart didn't just break; it incinerated. He expected me to stay as his mistress, threatening to dig up my dead mother’s grave if I refused to play the obedient pet. He thought I was trapped. He thought I had nowhere to go because of my father’s massive gambling debts. He was wrong. With shaking hands, I pulled out my phone and texted the one name I was never supposed to use. Keith Mosley. The Don. The monster under Chace's bed. *I am invoking the Blood Oath. My father’s debt. I am ready to pay it.* His reply came three seconds later, buzzing against my palm like a warning. *The price is marriage. You belong to me. Yes or No?* I looked up at Chace, who was laughing with his new fiancée, thinking he owned me. I looked down and typed three letters. *Yes.*

I spent four hours preparing a five-course meal for our fifth anniversary. When Jackson finally walked into the penthouse an hour late, he didn't even look at the table. He just dropped a thick Manila envelope in front of me and told me he was done. He said his stepsister, Davida, was getting worse and needed "stability." I wasn't his wife; I was a placeholder, a temporary fix he used until the woman he actually loved was ready to take my place. Jackson didn't just want a divorce; he wanted to erase me. He called me a "proprietary asset," claiming that every design I had created to save his empire belonged to him. He froze my bank accounts, cut off my phone, and told me I’d be nothing without his name. Davida even called me from her hospital bed to flaunt the family heirloom ring Jackson claimed was lost, mocking me for being "baggage" that was finally being cleared out. I stood in our empty home, realizing I had spent five years being a martyr for a man who saw me as a transaction. I couldn't understand how he could be so blind to the monster he was protecting, or how he could discard me so coldly after I had given him everything. I grabbed my hidden sketchbook, shredded our wedding portrait, and walked out into the rain. I dialed a number I hadn't touched in years—a dangerous man known as The Surgeon who dealt in debts and shadows. I told him I was ready to pay his price. Jackson and Davida wanted to steal my identity, but I was about to show the world the literal scars they had left behind.

I was finally brought back to the billionaire Vance estate after years in the grimy foster system, but the luxury Lincoln felt more like a funeral procession. My biological family didn't welcome me with open arms; they looked at me like a stain on a silk shirt. They thought I was a "defective" mute with cognitive delays, a spare part to be traded away. Within hours of my arrival, my father decided to sell me to Julian Thorne, a bitter, paralyzed heir, just to secure a corporate merger. My sister Tiffany treated me like trash, whispering for me to "go back to the gutter" before pouring red wine over my dress in front of Manhattan's elite. When a drunk cousin tried to lay hands on me at the engagement gala, my grandmother didn't protect me-she raised her silver-topped cane to strike my face for "embarrassing the family." They called me a sacrificial lamb, laughing as they signed the prenuptial agreement that stripped me of my freedom. They had no idea I was E-11, the underground hacker-artist the world was obsessed with, or that I had already breached their private servers. I found the hidden medical records-blood types A, A, and B-a biological impossibility that proved my "parents" were harboring a scandal that could ruin them. Why bring me back just to discard me again? And why was Julian Thorne, the man supposedly bound to a wheelchair, secretly running miles at dawn on his private estate? Standing in the middle of the ballroom, I didn't plead for mercy. I used a text-to-speech app to broadcast a cold, synthetic threat: "I have the records, Richard. Do you want me to explain genetics to the press, or should we leave quietly?" With the "paralyzed" billionaire as my unexpected accomplice, I walked out of the Vance house and into a much more dangerous game.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."
