Poor and struggling, Bernice tried to get her feet in the world by doing menial jobs to survive. But then the man she truly loved broke her heart by spending her hard-earned money and sleeping with her best friend. She will be forced to accept a billionaire's proposal and when she sets her eyes on him and realizes he is her ex-boyfriend's uncle, revenge will be brewing hot.

His uncle's sweetheart Chapter 1 The hurt

"What is happening here?" she asked in a very low voice which was barely above a whisper.

Bernice's eyes darted from left to right then she began to shake from so much pain, the betrayal she felt was second to none,it cut through her like a very hot knife.

Hot tears spring from her eyes as she watches the scene before her.

This was unbelievable. Never in a million years will she believe that Ethan will do something like this to her.

She could have forgiven him right here and now if only he had done it with someone else then it might be better but it was with nobody but her best friend Olivia.

The shock was still plastered on her face as more tears streamed down her eyes.

He was the same person who had called her just a few hours ago that he had running temperature and he needed some money for drugs but here he was groaning and moaning with her best friend beneath him, both of them entangled in ceaseless ecstasy.

And to even think that she had turned down a marriage proposal from Italy's popular billionaire CEO because she thought the love they both shared was strong and genuine.

She began to step back a little as their moans grew louder driving her crazy ,she missed her footing and stepped on a crushed piece of paper and that was when both of them realized she had been in the room all this while watching them.

They immediately disengaged and the shock which was plastered on Ethan's face was enough to win a Grammy award.

"Bernice." He stuttered trying to cover his nakedness ,they both fumbled for the blanket .

Olivia was chewing gum and she pretended not to see Bernice trying to avoid her, and she finger combed her disheveled hair.

"We....I ... didn't know when you came back ." he said stupidly ." Why didn't you knock?"

She stared at him stunned and felt like reaching over to strangle him.

"Is this what you are supposed to say?"

"I thought you said you were running temperature ."she heard herself and bit down on her lower lips so hard that it brought out blood.

"I even came with the money for your meds." Then she shook her head trying to pull herself together.

"Why ? Ethan why?"She cried as her heart tightened breaking into thousands of irreplaceable pieces.

And to think she left her job at the restaurant just to come and see him .

To see this nonsense.

"I can explain." She heard him saying again as he tried to sit up properly.

"Ethan, you have been cheating on me with my best friend and all this while I thought that we were in love."She said her voice breaking.Ethan our wedding is in two weeks time."

She reminded him and began to weep .

"How could you, how could you do this to me?I thought you loved me?"

He looked sheepishly.

"I do,but please I beg you just forgive me."

"Forgive?" She chuckled bitterly

"You even have the nerve to sleep with her on my bed."

Ethan was her life, everything she thought she had found in a man, all his excesses and bad behavior, she had overlooked because she thought her love was enough for both of them.

But then she had died a thousand deaths when she saw this.

"Why would you do this to me?" she said again

He quickly wore his trousers and tried to approach her.

"Don't touch me."she warned him.

"Aww,come on ." he raised his hands in exasperation ." I have already apologized. What else do you want me to do? give you the statue of liberty?"

She stared at him in shock, her eyes dancing with fresh tears .

"Is this what you are saying?" She asked, her voice cracking with sobs.

As if that wasn't enough he continued."You should have given me a call that you will be arriving soon. "

While she was still trying to put herself together she heard a beep from her phone and she glanced at it and the message on the phone almost made her lose consciousness.

It was a message from her landlord.

Using the back of her palm, she wiped her tears. She was going to bring up the subject later but for now she needed to pay her house rent and also her tuition fees.

"Can I have the money I gave you two weeks ago?"

Ethan and Olivia exchanged funny glances and it seemed they wanted to laugh all this while Olivia said nothing as she was still sitting on the bed chewing the gum.

"I don't have it now," Ethan said.

"I don't understand what you mean," she said in a small voice. "That money is for the house rent and my tuition fees. What did you do with it ?"

"Can I just have a moment of Peace? He yelled, stamping his feet ."Just because of this little mistake, you're already reminding me of past debts."

Her eyes widened still trying to process what was happening ."Do you call this little? Ethan we are supposed to get married."

"Oh please." Olivia said for the first time ." Who do you think you are? The college sweetheart?

*look he is mine so back off, she moved closer and dropped a kiss on the side of his neck while she watched on.

"So why are you still standing staring at us? You should get moving. He was mine first and we had been dating for six months but you had your head buried in your books to notice." Then Olivia approached her still hugging the sheets around her curvy frame.

"You are nothing but a twerp, a poverty-stricken fool ." She said, jabbing her fingers in Bernice's chest ." You are so worthless and...."

Without waiting for another heartbreaking word, Bernice turned around and ran out of the room running down the stairs with tears flooding down her cheeks.

She had to do it now, she could be betrayed and hurt but she wouldn't be overcome by life troubles.

She scrolled down her phone and went through call logs to the unknown number that called her two weeks ago.

It was now or never.

On the second ring, a voice came on the other end.

"Am I speaking to the P.A."

A slight pause.

"Tell Mr Fernandez that I have accepted his proposal."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.
