Chapter 1

[1]

Aunt Paige couldn't stand seeing our family doing better than hers. She schemed to take everything from us.

I was accepted into a prestigious university, while Grayson didn't even pass the vocational school entrance exam. On the day of my university acceptance banquet, a child from the village fell into the water. Aunt Paige pushed me in.

"Simon, you're a student at a prestigious university. You can't bring shame to your school. Go save that child!"

I struggled to lift the child out of the water, but I ended up drowning myself. After my death, my grandfather and mother also passed away in succession. Grayson, recognized for his bravery, was admitted to a university. Aunt Paige took the compensation for the relocation of our family's 200-acre orchard. From being impoverished, she became the wealthiest person in the village.

After being reborn, I saw that child fall into the water again. Before Aunt Paige could say a word, I kicked her into the water.

I was accepted into a top-tier university, while Grayson didn't even meet the minimum requirements for a vocational college. Aunt Paige wanted to send him to join the military.

Grandpa held my acceptance letter, beaming with joy, and invited Aunt Paige's family over for dinner.

After several toasts, Uncle Rylan started his same old story.

"Simon, when your father had his accident, you were only ten. I took care of all the arrangements. When you make something of yourself, don't forget your Uncle Rylan!"

Aunt Paige, already envious of my university acceptance, had been giving me the cold shoulder for days. She shot me a fierce glare.

"That's right, Simon. You can't be ungrateful. When you succeed, you must show us respect!"

Looking at my still-living grandpa and mom, I realized I had been reborn.

In my previous life, my mom was so happy she wanted to throw a celebration for my university acceptance. She was known as a kind person and got along well with everyone in the village. The whole village came that day; it was a lively scene.

In the chaos, a five or six-year-old boy fell into the small river in front of our house. Aunt Paige grabbed me and ran to the riverbank. As soon as we got there, she pushed me into the river.

"Simon, you're a student at a top-tier university. You can't disgrace your school. Go save him."

I was a mediocre swimmer and swallowed several mouthfuls of water before I barely managed to grab the boy. Using all my strength, I lifted him onto the shore, but I was swept away by the current. It took three days to find my body.

Grandpa, already ill, was heartbroken by my death and passed away a few days later. Mom couldn't bear the blow and drowned herself in that same river.

Aunt Paige and Uncle Rylan not only took the compensation for our 200-acre orchard but also inherited Mom's grocery store. Grayson, hailed as a hero, was admitted to a university under special circumstances. Aunt Paige and Uncle Rylan went from dirt poor to filthy rich, living a prosperous life, while our family was destroyed, and we died with unresolved grievances.

Aunt Paige was still recounting how they had arranged my father's funeral. I suddenly stood up and threw my bowl and chopsticks at them, shocking everyone.

"Simon, what's gotten into you? Just because you got into university, you think you're something special? You haven't even started your career, and you're already turning your back on family?"

Aunt Paige had never been treated like this; she was always the one bullying others.

"My dad's been dead for eight years. You've been talking about it for eight years. I want to know, how did my dad die? Wasn't it your responsibility to arrange his funeral?"

The whole family was speechless. Mom started to sob quietly. She had always been a kind person, never knowing how to fight back when bullied.

Years ago, Grayson lost his hat at the ice rink. It was just a few dollars, but Aunt Paige insisted my dad go back to find it. It was already spring, and the ice suddenly cracked. My dad never came back. Every family gathering, they would bring up this incident. But if it weren't for Grayson's stupid hat, my dad wouldn't have died. My mom and I wouldn't have lived such a hard life.

"And another thing, the resort compensated us five thousand dollars back then. You said you'd borrow it and return it by the end of the year. It's been eight years. I don't want the interest, just give me back the principal."

Aunt Paige didn't expect me to ask for the money. Mom had never mentioned it all these years. She instantly flew into a rage.

"You ungrateful brat, your mom never said a word. What are you yelling about?"

I flipped the table, dumping the food all over them.

"My mom didn't ask because she's too kind. I'm not so easygoing. If you don't return the money, I'll sue you. And Grayson can forget about joining the military!"

I had already died once; what did I have to fear?

Uncle Rylan had been detained a few times and was worried his son's background check wouldn't pass. Hearing my threat, he finally calmed down.

"I'll give you three days. If you don't return the money, we'll see each other in court."

Aunt Paige looked at Grandpa. Even though he always favored her, he knew Mom had been supporting him all these years. Even if he had no conscience, he couldn't stop me from asking for the money.

I heard they had a huge fight when they got home. Grayson was the most upset, saying he wouldn't live if he couldn't join the military. With no other choice, Aunt Paige brought the money over the next day.
