Francis stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of his high-rise office, gazing out at the LA skyline. His assistant, Rachel, suddenly entered his office with a hesitant expression.
"Francis, there's someone here to see you. She is Sally Taylor."
Francis's heart skipped a beat. Sally. The one person he'd never forgotten. He hadn't seen or spoken to her in over two decades, yet the memories still lingered. The passion, the laughter, the tears.
"Send her in," Francis ordered. His voice was firm, but his mind was racing.
Rachel nodded and left, closing the door behind her. Francis took a deep breath, preparing himself for the encounter. He hadn't expected Sally to reach out after all these years.
The door opened again, and Sally walked in. She looked different, yet the same. Her long, curly brown hair was now shorter and straighter, but her bright green eyes still sparkled. Her smile, however, was guarded, and her eyes held a hint of wariness.
"Francis," she called, with her soft voice, yet cautious.
"Sally," he replied, his voice a little rougher than he intended. "It's really been a long time."
They stood there for a moment, the tension between them was palpable. Francis couldn't help but notice the scars on her hands and arms, a reminder of the fire that had torn them apart.
Sally broke the silence, her voice a little stronger now. "I wasn't sure if you'd see me", she said.
"Of course, I'd see you. What brings you here, Sally?" Francis gestured to the couch and responded.
She hesitated, then sat down with her eyes fixed on him. "I need to talk to you about something. Something important", she opened up.
Francis raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Go on."
Sally took a deep breath before speaking, her words spilling out in a rush. "It's about the past, our togetherness in the past, Francis. About what happened afterwards. I've been thinking a lot about it lately, and I need closure."
Francis gut tightened. He knew exactly what she was referring to, he knew what she was trying to say. The fire. The accident. The mistake that had haunted him for several years.
He fixed his gaze on her, awaiting Sally to disclose what was really in her heart. But, Sally would not want to point these things out by herself, she wanted Francis to spill them out by himself. "I mustn't speak these right now, I've had enough regret and guilt in the past", Francis thought in his heart as he tried letting Sally convey her mind.
