Chapter 1 The Proposal

Emily Brooks had always been a dreamer. Even as she struggled to make ends meet in the bustling city of New York, she held on to her passion for art. But dreams don't pay bills, and lately, they certainly didn't cover the mounting medical expenses for her ailing mother. Life had become a series of sacrifices-her time, her happiness, and now, it seemed, even her very identity.

One evening, as Emily sat in the small, dimly lit apartment she shared with her mother, a knock on the door disrupted her thoughts. She opened it to find a man in an impeccable black suit. His piercing blue eyes and chiseled features were striking, but it was the air of authority about him that made her catch her breath. He introduced himself as James Carter, the personal assistant to Alexander King, one of the wealthiest men in the world.

Before she could even ask what someone like him was doing on her doorstep, James handed her a card. "Mr. King would like to meet with you," he said, his tone polite but firm. Emily looked at the card. It was simple, with only an address and a time-tomorrow at noon. She had no idea why a billionaire would want to meet with her, but she couldn't afford to pass up any opportunity that might help her mother.

The next day, Emily found herself in front of a towering skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan. The receptionist directed her to the top floor, where she was led into a lavish office that overlooked the entire city. The walls were adorned with priceless works of art, but they did little to calm her nerves.

Then she saw him-Alexander King. He stood by the window, his back turned to her as he looked out over the city. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably dressed. His presence commanded attention, and as he turned to face her, Emily felt a shiver run down her spine. His eyes were cold, almost calculating, as if he could see right through her.

"Miss Brooks," he said in a voice that was as smooth as it was intimidating. "Thank you for coming. I'm sure you're wondering why you're here."

Emily nodded, trying to find her voice. "Yes, Mr. King. I-I don't understand why someone like you would want to meet with someone like me."

Alexander's expression didn't change. He gestured for her to sit down, and once she did, he sat across from her, steepling his fingers as he spoke. "I'm going to be blunt. I need a wife."

Emily blinked, certain she had misheard. "A wife?"

"Yes. But not in the way you might think. This would be a business arrangement, nothing more. My grandmother is gravely ill, and her dying wish is to see me married. I have no interest in a real marriage, but for her sake, I'm willing to go through the motions. That's where you come in."

Emily stared at him, her mind racing. This had to be a joke. But Alexander King didn't seem like the kind of man who joked about anything. "I don't understand," she said slowly. "Why me?"

Alexander's gaze never wavered. "You bear a striking resemblance to my ex-fiancée. She left me just a month before our wedding, and my grandmother never knew. If you agree to marry me, she will never have to know."

Emily's heart pounded in her chest. This was madness. But then Alexander leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers. "In return, I will pay off all your debts. Your mother's medical bills will be taken care of, and you will have more money than you ever dreamed of. Six months, and you'll be free to walk away with your life changed forever."

She wanted to say no. She wanted to tell him that this was insane, that she couldn't possibly pretend to be someone's wife, not even for six months. But the thought of her mother, lying in that hospital bed, barely able to afford the treatments she needed, stopped her. This could save her mother's life. And six months wasn't forever. It was just long enough to secure their future.

Emily took a deep breath and looked into Alexander's eyes, which were still cold, still unreadable. "I'll do it," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "I'll be your wife."
