Chapter 1 The Inheritance

The clatter of the bus coming to a stop woke Elena Johnson from her daze. She blinked, her thoughts still tangled in the odd dream that had haunted her the night before-a mansion, endless hallways, and people she didn't recognize. Shaking her head, she gathered her belongings and descended the bus steps, greeted by the familiar sights of her bustling, modest neighborhood. It wasn't much, but it was home.

Elena worked as a waitress at Joe's Diner, a small but cozy place where she'd spent the last few years saving every penny she could. Life had never been easy for her. After her mother's death, she had taken on the weight of the world, determined to make something of herself despite the endless hardships.

As she pushed open the diner door, the familiar smell of coffee and frying bacon greeted her. She forced a smile, ready for another long day. But her mind lingered on the envelope she had received in the mail last night-an official-looking letter from a law firm she had never heard of.

"Morning, Elena!" Jessica, her best friend and colleague, called out from behind the counter.

"Morning, Jess," Elena replied, tying on her apron. "Anything exciting happen?"

"Same old, same old. But...you look like you've seen a ghost. Everything okay?" Jessica asked, concern in her eyes.

Elena hesitated for a moment, then pulled the letter from her bag, smoothing out the creases. "I got this yesterday. It's from some fancy law firm. I was going to throw it away, but...something made me keep it."

Jessica's eyes widened as she examined the letter. "You should open it! What if it's, like, an inheritance or something?"

Elena laughed, though the sound felt hollow. "Inheritance? From who? We barely had enough to keep the lights on when Mom was alive."

But Jessica was persistent, handing the letter back. "You never know. What if it's something important?"

Sighing, Elena reluctantly tore open the envelope. Her eyes skimmed the words at first, but then she froze.

Ms. Elena Johnson,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been named the sole heir to the estate of the late Mr. Edward Hartman...

Elena blinked, her heart pounding in her chest. Edward Hartman? Who was he? Why would a man she had never heard of leave her anything, let alone an estate? She skimmed the letter again, disbelief tightening her throat.

"Elena?" Jessica's voice was distant now, as if coming from underwater. "What does it say?"

Elena couldn't answer. She stood there, frozen, her mind racing. How could this be real? This had to be a mistake.

Without saying a word, she handed the letter to Jessica, who read it aloud, her voice trembling with excitement.

"You've inherited something. A lot of something, from a billionaire!" Jessica squealed. "Oh my God, Elena, this could change your life!"

Elena's legs felt weak. She sank into the nearest chair, her thoughts swirling. She had lived her entire life scrapping by, and now she was suddenly the heir to a fortune? It didn't make any sense.

Before she could process it, her phone rang, startling her. The name on the screen read Hartman & Co. Hesitating for a moment, she answered.

"Ms. Johnson?" a smooth, professional voice asked. "This is Olivia Daniels, Mr. Hartman's attorney. I assume you've received our letter."

"I-yes, I did. But there must be some mistake. I don't even know who Edward Hartman is."

"There is no mistake," Olivia replied, her tone unwavering. "Mr. Hartman was very clear in his will. You are his only heir. He requested that we meet in person to discuss the details of the inheritance. Can you come to the Hartman estate tomorrow morning?"

Elena's breath caught. The estate? "I-I guess so. Yes."

"Good. I'll send a car for you at 9 a.m. sharp. We'll explain everything then."

Before she could ask any questions, the call ended, leaving her in stunned silence.

Jessica grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her gently. "This is it, Elena! This is your moment! You could be rich!"

But Elena didn't feel excited. She felt terrified. Who was Edward Hartman? Why would a billionaire leave her everything? And what would this new world hold for her? The questions gnawed at her as the day dragged on.

The next morning, Elena barely slept, her mind restless with the unknown. At exactly 9 a.m., a sleek black limousine pulled up in front of her tiny apartment. The driver, a tall, stern man in a black suit, opened the door for her, and Elena climbed in, her stomach twisted in knots.

The drive to the Hartman estate was long, winding through the city's wealthiest neighborhoods, where towering glass buildings gave way to sprawling mansions. Elena had never seen anything like it. The further they went, the more surreal it felt.

Finally, they arrived at the estate. The wrought-iron gates opened slowly, revealing a sprawling mansion set against manicured gardens and glistening fountains. It was the kind of place you only saw in movies.

The driver escorted her inside, where Olivia Daniels, the same woman she had spoken to on the phone, greeted her with a professional smile.

"Ms. Johnson, welcome. Please, follow me. There's much to discuss."

Olivia led her down long hallways filled with expensive art and antique furniture until they arrived at a grand office, where a portrait of Edward Hartman hung on the wall. He was an older man, with sharp features and a dignified expression. Elena stared at the painting, searching for any sign of recognition, but nothing about him seemed familiar.

"Please, sit," Olivia said, motioning to a chair across from her desk. "I'm sure you have many questions."

"I don't understand any of this," Elena admitted, her voice shaky. "Who was Edward Hartman, and why did he leave me his estate?"

Olivia folded her hands neatly on the desk. "Edward Hartman was a very private man, and his reasons for naming you his heir are known only to him. But the fact remains-his will is ironclad. You are now the owner of the Hartman family fortune, including this estate and a controlling interest in Hartman Industries, a billion-dollar empire."

Elena felt like the floor had fallen out from under her. A billionaire empire? She barely had enough to pay rent last week, and now she owned a company?

As Olivia continued to explain the legalities, Elena's head spun. This was too much, too fast. Her life had changed overnight, and she wasn't sure she was ready for it.

But before she could even begin to comprehend what was happening, the door to the office swung open, and a man strode in. He was tall, impeccably dressed, and exuded an air of authority. His sharp blue eyes fixed on Elena, filled with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.

"You must be Elena," he said, his voice low and cold. "I'm Daniel Hartman. And I'd like to know exactly why someone like you thinks she deserves any part of my father's legacy."

His words hung in the air like a threat, and Elena's heart raced. She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out.

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ “I want to get a divorce, Mark,” I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time—even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.
