Chapter 1 Emily

Chapter 1 [Emily]

There was an underlying tension in the air in the living room.

I looked up at the people seated in front of me, horrified. The notion of what I had just heard caused a surge of intense rage to shoot through me.

"What are you talking about,?" I enquired.

"Emily , take off your clothes!" The woman said it again.

Did they all make jokes? When I turned to look at Dad, his expression was unreadable. If I undressed in front of so many people, it didn't matter to him. Ultimately, he had personally planned the entire event.

He had informed me earlier in the morning that our pack was currently in financial jeopardy and that he intended to sell me to the Green Shadow Pack in return for resources.

Why must I be the one doing it? I was the first daughter of the alpha. The alpha of the shadow pack would be more than happy to buy many of the girls in the pack. But my dad would have rather had me. Why was he so hostile towards me?

"Why do I have to take off my clothes?" My voice was raspy from the emotions that were eating away at me as I inquired.

"Emma, don't feel ashamed or degraded. Please take off your dirty clothes since no one here is interested in a girl like you." She growled and seized my clothing.

Her mouth drew nearer to my ears. "The alpha told me that you have the filthy blood of an omega and you are also wolfless, so you should be thankful that I'm even considering taking you to our pack!"

"I won't take my clothes off in front of so many people!" I remained firm and looked Dad in the eye while I talked.

"Dad, tell her to let go!" When he did not respond, I yelled.

Dad sneered. How come I should do that? Pay attention to what she says, or else you risk receiving harsh punishment."

There was no more arguing from him, and I understood exactly what he meant when he said "punishment." I closed my eyes tightly, trying to keep the hurtful memories from coming back.

When I turned eighteen two years ago, my step-sister Lopez had already shifted and received her wolf on the same day, but I was unable to even shift.

The next week, I shifted unexpectedly, but I had to keep it a secret because my wolf was a pure white wolf, which could only mean one thing. I was a cursed wolf, here to bring the world to an end. And I would be executed right away if anyone found out.

Consequently, I had to maintain the appearance of being wolfless, and ever since, my father's affection for me had soured. I was reduced to the status of a slave by him, and I was forced to perform all the pack's manual labour. I was a disgrace to him, and he made it clear that he wanted no part of me.

"Dad, please can we not do this?" With a thump, I went to my knees and my brain exploded from the hit.

"Emma, the mating ritual is about to begin. Now that we have resolved this, you can leave my pack and my sight! Keep me from repeating myself. Dad sounded so full of disdain.

My heart felt like it had broken in two. How could Dad have such cold heart? How could someone be so calm even if they wanted to sell their daughter? I turned back the years that were about to overflow.

He wanted me to leave his pack and his sight. Then I most certainly will, but not at his request. I'll depart precisely how I wanted to.

I shoved Eva and shot to my feet without any warning. I heard footsteps skittering behind me as I doubled up the stairs.

"Bring her back here!" Dad's irate voice called out to me. "If she escapes, then you lose your life!"

Since I knew my way around the home and wasn't planning on letting them catch me today, I felt a little terrible for the guards pursuing me. I turned a corner, ran into the closest room, and slammed the door.

Before long, I heard someone pounding on the door and then a loud banging. I was thinking of ways to get out, and my heart was racing in my chest.

Dad started, "Emily, you know I don't wanna hurt you," in a voice that didn't sound like his.

"You are the future heir of this pack and my first daughter. You should only act in this way for the benefit of the pack that you will eventually rule. So please exit the room. I'll bring you back when things settle down, I swear."

I couldn't decide if to laugh or cry. I was finally recognised by him as his first daughter. And as his first daughter, I should be sold for my responsibility? How far has that taken me? Always following his lead and putting up with my stepsister and stepmother's abuse.

I refused to allow him to ruin my life once more. I bounded over to the window and tried to figure out how I could get down.

While I was still thinking, I heard Dad grumble.

"Emily get out of the room!" He continued, "Break this fucking door down!" a minute later.

I jumped down and closed my eyes shut without thinking any more. It was better than living with Dad for the rest of my life, even if I did die.

I felt my heart race as I felt something push me down, and I heard the door behind me slam open.

Bring her here after you locate her! You are all going to die if she leaves this area!" Dad told them to.

I felt like my body was on fire, and just when I thought I would fall and shatter my arm or possibly crack my brain, I felt like I was surrounded by strong arms and could smell vanilla.

The dude had a wonderful scent. dominant, strong, and alluring. I could feel his muscles moving beneath my palm, and it heated me from the inside out.

Gradually, I lifted my head to meet the most beautiful blue eyes I had ever laid eyes on. I momentarily lost awareness of the situation I was in. My wolf danced furiously inside me and I felt joy flood over me like electricity, my whole body stilling.

My gaze lingered on his visage. A few strands of his raven black hair stuck to his forehead like a glove. A flurry of emotions, including surprise and shock, as well as one I couldn't quite identify, were reflected in his eyes.

I flinched out of his arms as he painfully cleared his throat. My cheeks reddened as I realised how blatantly I had been staring at him.

I started to apologise, but my inner wolf snarled at that very moment.

"Sir!"

I blurted out the term at the same moment as he said his. At that moment, the aura about him shifted, and he gave me a possessive look. I wasn't scared, though. Quite the contrary-it excited me.

The vanilla smell intensified all of a sudden. So intoxicating that my mind reeled. A gentle tap on my shoulders preceded my knowledge of what was happening, and I would be lying if I denied that it sent shivers of longing down my spine.

I whirled around and swallowed hard as my gaze fell on the faces of three men who bore a striking resemblance to the man I had just met.

"Ah! Aurora, here you are. Little one, we've found you at last!" They joined in chorus.

For seventeen years, I was the crown jewel of the Kensington empire, the perfect daughter groomed for a royal future. Then, a cream-colored envelope landed in my lap, bearing a gold crest and a truth that turned my world into ice. The DNA test result was a cold, hard zero percent-I wasn't a Kensington. Before the ink could even dry, my parents invited my replacement, a girl named Alleen, into the drawing room and treated me like a trespasser in my own home. My mother, who once hosted galas in my honor, wouldn't even look me in the eye as she stroked Alleen's arm, whispering that she was finally "safe." My father handed me a one-million-dollar check-a mere tip for a billionaire-and told me to leave immediately to avoid tanking the company's stock price. "You're a thief! You lived my life, you spent my money, and you don't get to keep the loot!" Alleen shrieked, trying to claw the designer jacket off my shoulders while my "parents" watched with clinical detachment. I was dumped on a gritty sidewalk in Queens with nothing but three trunks and the address of a struggling laborer I was now supposed to call "Dad." I traded a marble mansion for a crumbling walk-up where the air smelled of exhaust and my new bedroom was a literal storage closet. My biological family thought I was a broken princess, and the Kensingtons thought they had successfully erased me with a payoff and a non-disclosure agreement. They had no idea that while I was hauling trunks up four flights of stairs, my secret media empire was already preparing to move against them. As I sat on a thin mattress in the dark, I opened my encrypted laptop and sent a single command that would cost my former father ten million dollars by breakfast. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves, but they forgot one thing: I'm the one who leads the pack.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
