Lila Monroe has spent her life playing the game of wealth and power, using her beauty and cunning to secure the lifestyle she deserves. As a gold digger, love has never been part of the plan. That is, until one reckless night with Adrian Blackwood, a ruthless billionaire with a heart colder than his steel empire, changes everything. When Lila discovers she's pregnant, she sees a golden opportunity but Adrian sees right through her. He's been burned by a gold digger before, and he won't be fooled again. What starts as a battle of wits and wills quickly turns into something far more dangerous, as their undeniable chemistry pulls them closer than either of them can resist. Caught between hate, betrayal, and a secret that could destroy them both, Lila and Adrian are forced to confront the truth about their pasts and what they truly want. But when trust is shattered and hearts are laid bare, will they find a way to forgive, or will they tear each other apart in a bid for control?

Chapter 1 1

The neon lights of New York City shimmered like shards of glass against the rain-slicked pavement. It was nearly midnight, but the streets were still buzzing-people darting in and out of clubs, the hum of engines filling the air, and the distant laughter of partygoers echoing through the canyons of steel and concrete. High above it all, perched in the exclusive VIP lounge of one of Manhattan's most expensive bars, Lila Monroe leaned back against the plush leather sofa, her fingers lazily tracing the rim of her crystal glass.

Tonight, she was dressed to kill: a silk red dress that clung to her curves like a second skin, a pair of heels that could bring men to their knees, and a smile that promised everything while giving away nothing. Her dark hair cascaded in waves over her bare shoulders, framing her face in a way that highlighted her sharp cheekbones and the sly sparkle in her green eyes.

Across the room, a group of well-dressed men laughed, their voices loud and arrogant, filling the air with a sense of entitlement that only extreme wealth could afford. Lila's gaze flicked over them, assessing, calculating. She knew these types all too well. Billionaires, CEOs, trust-fund babies-they were her playground, her livelihood. She wasn't here for a drink or the ambiance; she was here to hunt.

But then she saw him.

Adrian Blackwood.

He sat apart from the others, his broad shoulders framed by the soft glow of the lights behind him. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, crisp white shirt open at the collar, and his dark hair was swept back in a way that made him look both dangerous and impossibly handsome. He held a tumbler of scotch in his hand, the amber liquid swirling as he absently watched the ice melt.

Lila's heart skipped a beat, though she'd never admit it. Adrian was not just another billionaire; he was the one everyone else wanted to be. Ruthless, cunning, and untouchable. The stories about him were legendary-how he'd built his tech empire from nothing, how he'd crushed his competition without a second thought. He was a man who got what he wanted, always. And tonight, she decided, he was going to want her.

She slid out of the booth, the dress sliding over her body like water. As she made her way across the room, she could feel the eyes of other men on her, but she didn't care. Her focus was entirely on Adrian, and she didn't break her stride until she was standing right in front of him.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked, her voice low and sultry.

Adrian looked up, his gaze locking onto hers. For a moment, he didn't say anything, simply took in the sight of her-eyes traveling from her red lips to the curve of her hips. He smirked, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"Suit yourself," he said, gesturing to the empty seat beside him.

Lila slid in, crossing her legs slowly, knowing he was watching. She leaned in slightly, letting the scent of her perfume-something expensive and intoxicating-reach him. "You don't seem like the type who enjoys crowds," she said.

"I don't," Adrian replied, his voice deep and smooth. He took a sip of his drink, his eyes never leaving hers. "But I also don't like being alone."

"Lucky for you, I'm great company," she purred.

A flicker of amusement crossed his face. "I'm sure you are. But tell me, what's a woman like you doing here tonight? Looking for someone, perhaps?"

Lila raised an eyebrow. "What makes you think I'm looking for anyone?"

Adrian leaned back, resting his arm on the back of the sofa. He was so close now that she could feel the heat of his body, the power radiating off him like a tangible force. "Because you don't strike me as the type who leaves things to chance."

She tilted her head, giving him a playful smile. "Maybe I was hoping to find someone interesting."

"Interesting," Adrian repeated, the word rolling off his tongue like a challenge. He studied her for a moment longer, and she could tell he was trying to figure her out, trying to decide what kind of game she was playing. "And do you find me interesting, Miss...?"

"Monroe," she supplied. "Lila Monroe."

"Monroe," he repeated, testing the name like it was a piece of fine wine he was tasting. "You have the look of someone who's used to getting what she wants, Lila."

She didn't flinch, didn't break eye contact. "And you have the look of someone who doesn't like to be told no."

Adrian's smirk deepened. "Touché."

They sat in silence for a moment, the tension between them thick and electric. Lila felt a thrill run through her, a mix of excitement and danger she hadn't felt in a long time. Adrian was different. He wasn't like the others. He wouldn't be easily manipulated or fooled. And that only made her want him more.

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Tell me, Adrian, what do you do for fun when you're not busy running the world?"

His eyes darkened, something dangerous flickering behind them. "I don't play games, Lila."

"Oh, but I do," she said, her smile widening. "And I'm very good at them."

He set his glass down on the table, his expression turning serious. "Careful, Lila. You might be biting off more than you can chew."

"Is that a warning?" she asked, her heart racing.

"It's a promise," he said, his voice low and rough.

She felt a shiver run down her spine, but she kept her smile in place. "I like a challenge."

"Good," Adrian said, leaning in so close that his lips almost brushed against her ear. "Because you're going to get one."

Before she could respond, he stood up, offering her his hand. She hesitated for just a second before taking it, feeling the strength in his grip. He pulled her to her feet, not letting go.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"You said you wanted to find someone interesting," he replied, his voice a seductive murmur. "Let's see if you can keep up."

Lila's pulse quickened. She had played this game a hundred times before, but never with someone like Adrian Blackwood. As he led her out of the VIP lounge, she couldn't help but wonder if she was in over her head.

But then again, that was exactly where she wanted to be.
