Chapter 1 The Unexpected Encounter.

Lily Hart was no stranger to long nights. The life of an art curator was a constant whirlwind of delicate details, late hours, and the gentle hum of anticipation that resonated before an opening night. The gallery, her pride and passion, stood as a testament to years of dedication and hard work. Yet, as she meticulously checked the final placements of the evening's featured pieces, a quiet sense of unease tingled at the back of her mind.

"Everything's in place," Lisa, her best friend and the gallery's public relations manager, reassured her with a grin. Lisa's dark curls bounced as she moved, her eyes alight with excitement. "Stop worrying, Lily. You've worked magic here."

Lily exhaled a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "I know. It's just that tonight feels... different." She knew deep down that something was going to change.

Before Lisa could respond, the chime of the entrance doors opening swept across the gallery. The guests were arriving, dressed in a cascade of silk, velvet, and understated elegance. Lily's heart quickened, but it wasn't until she saw him that the rhythm stumbled.

Ethan Cornwell stood at the threshold, surveying the room with a detached interest. He was tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that spoke of power and wealth. His eyes, a stormy gray that seemed to pierce through the ambient light, locked onto Lily's with a flicker of recognition that made her pulse thrum.

"Well, that's new," Lisa whispered, elbowing her. "Looks like the billionaire himself has taken an interest." She chuckled.

Lily's eyes darted back to Lisa. "You invited him?"

Lisa's smirk was unapologetic. "A good PR move, trust me. His presence alone will draw the attention we need. Besides, I've heard he's not just a collector but a connoisseur of meaningful art. And you, my dear, have meaningful art." She said smiling

Lily swallowed the jumble of emotions swirling in her chest. Ethan's reputation preceded him: shrewd, brilliant, and notoriously private. She had read enough articles about his cutthroat business acumen and multibillion-dollar deals to know that his interest in an independent art gallery was unexpected.

"Oh look, he's coming over here. You've got this girl." Lisa said smiling as she slid away to meet the other guests.

"Stay composed," she reminded herself, straightening her shoulders as he approached.

"Miss Hart," Ethan greeted as kissed her hands, his voice smooth and low, carrying a hint of intrigue. "Your gallery's reputation precedes itself."

Lily's lips curved into a practiced smile. "I'm glad to hear it. I hope tonight's exhibition lives up to your expectations."

He inclined his head, a shadow of a smile gracing his lips. "I'm certain it will."

Their gazes lingered for a moment longer than polite conversation warranted. There was something in his eyes-a mix of curiosity and something deeper-that sent a shiver down her spine.
