"Master Caleb, Langston Family is on the brink of destruction, please come back..."
"Yes, Young Master Caleb, the entire family is counting on you to save them. The patriarch declare that if you come back, the position of the head of family will be yours!"
Standing before Caleb, a black Maybach idled, and a group of elderly men pleaded desperately, their faces etched with worry.
Caleb, dressed in worn sneakers and carrying two grocery bags, glanced at them coldly.
"Now you want me back? After everything?" Caleb's voice low and biting.
The humiliation of being kicked out of the Langston Family was unforgettable for him. Now that the family was in trouble, they came to beg him?
"Caleb, why are you always dragging your feet? You went to buy groceries and it took you so long to come back?"
As soon as he got home, Caleb saw his mother-in-law Linda sitting on the sofa cracking sunflower seeds, her face radiating annoyance.
"Mom, I'm really sorry, I ran into some trouble on the way," Caleb
"Don't give me any excuses, A man like you had no business if getting held up. Even if you were just taking a break on the way, can't you see what time it is? You want to starve us all to death! No wonder people say you're good-for-nothing, you can't even handle such a small matter!"
Linda threw the seeds on the table to the ground and pointed her finger at Caleb, cursing loudly.
"Go cook and clean the floor!"
"Yes, yes..."
Caleb didn't say anything, just bowed his head and went back to the kitchen with the bags.
The Birch Family was a second-rate family in Newport City. Three years ago, Caleb was brought back to the James Family in a coma and it was Walter Birch who organized the wedding.
This wedding caused a sensation throughout Newport City, Ava, had actually married a waste picked up by the Birch Family. It was a ridiculous farce that was well-known in the upper circles of Newport.
But Walter had his reasons. He alone knew Caleb's identity, a heir of the secretive Dragon Syndicate, betrayed and left for dead.
Caleb agreed to repay Walter's kindness. However, after they got married, Caleb and Ava had no real relationship as couples. They had not even touched each other's hands a few times. After Walter's death, Ava's mother-in-law, Linda, treated him coldly everyday. As a son-in-law, he had no dignity.
Caleb had long been accustomed to thus treatment. Although he didn't like it, he silently endured Lydia's scolding.
When Ava returned home, she gave Grant a cold glance and walked back to her room alone. After taking a shower, she sat by the window in a bathrobe. The light above her head illuminated her smooth and delicate skin, and the dew on her shoulders was just beginning to form. However, at this moment, Ava's face was filled with a faint sadness. Tears pooling in her eyes.
"Ah, it's really tiring to be alone," Ava sighed as she looked at herself in the mirror.
"Visionary Media, Veyron Group, they are all top-notch families that I can't afford to offend. Now, even lesser firms like Pyrestone Dynamics is bullying me......
Ava's eyes were filled with tears and she couldn't continue.
She thought of Caleb, who was washing vegetables in the kitchen. Other people's husbands were elite executives in their companies. Even if they weren't the kind of people who had extraordinary abilities, they were at least strong and reliable men. But her husband was a complete loser who only knew how to do housework!
"Dinner's ready."
A familiar voice interrupted Ava's thoughts. She turned around and saw Caleb leaning against the door, not knowing how long he had been standing there!
"Why did you come in? Can't you knock?" Ava immediately wiped away her tears, stood up with a cold face, and pointed her white and tender arm towards the door. "Now, get out!"
"Mom asked me to call you for dinner," Caleb stepped forward, hesitated when he saw the tears in Ava's eyes, and asked, "Are you having difficulties? Do you need my help?"
"Help?" Ava let out a hollow laugh. "What could you possibly do?"
"If it weren't for my dad picking you up three years since Walter arranged their engagement, and it had tormented for four long years.
"Caleb, I asked you to call Ava for dinner. Why haven't you come down yet?" Hearing the voice, Linda, Ava's mother-in-law, walked up the stairs and saw the scene. She immediately got angry, "Why is my daughter crying? Did you bully her, you useless piece of trash? You eat and use what we provide, and now you dare to bite the hand that feeds you?!"
"I didn't..." Caleb just started to speak.
"Bullshit! Look at other people's sons-in-law, they all drive luxury cars and live in villas. They are CEOs of companies. And here we are, still living in this rundown neighborhood. You even rely on Ava to give you yours salary!"
"What use are you?"
Bang!
Linda became angrier and angrier as she scolded, and she suddenly threw the tea cup on the table towards Caleb. Caleb slightly turned his head, and the glass cup immediately shattered against the wall.
"Hide? What's the point? Pick it up for me!" Linda pointed at Caleb and cursed loudly.
Caleb didn't say much, he squatted down and slowly picked up the broken glass pieces in his palm.
Suddenly, he clenched his fist tightly, and the bright red blood seeped through his fingers. He looked up and saw Ava's still red eyes. He felt aggrieved but helpless.
Linda, his mother-in-law, was right. He had been humiliated since he married into the Birch Family, and how could Ava, his wife, not be affected? Otherwise, he wouldn't be hiding in his room crying secretly.
He also felt guilty towards Ava.
"Worthless! Even if you scolded, you're still pathetic. There are only two months left until that dead man's will is due. When the time comes, you two will divorce. Otherwise, the Birch Family will always suffer like this!" Linda scolded.
"So, there are only two months left." Caleb murmured to himself.
Before Walter died, he left a will in the bank to prevent his family from looking down on Caleb and forcing him to divorce Ava. The will stated that all the money in the bank account could be withdrawn after Caleb and Ava had been married for four years. Now, there were only two months left until the four years were up.
"What are you mumbling about, you useless piece of trash!" Linda continued to scold him.
"Mom, stop it. It wasn't Caleb who did it just now." Ava couldn't help but speak up.
"Whether he did it or not, this pathetic loser must leave our family!" Linda shouted.
Caleb walked back to his room and could still hear Linda's scolding outside. He sat on the bed and sighed heavily, throwing the blood-stained glass pieces into the wastebasket.
"Birch Family, I have been protecting them for four years, Uncle Birch... I owe you my life, and I have paid it back...."
He used to be a soldier king.
The god of the Dragon group!
For Walter's request, he became a son-in-law in the family and served for four years.
"That's enough!"
Caleb opened his eyes and slowly suppressed the anger in his chest.
Naturally, they didn't call Caleb for dinner. After Linda, his mother-in-law, found him eating, she dumped all the food into the trash can to prevent Grant from speaking out to eat when he was hungry. Linda wished he would starve to death.
Boom, boom, boom....
The car downstairs started, and the beautiful Porsche rushed out of the night, leaving the trail of taillights.
Caleb stood at the window and could clearly see the determination on Ava's face, her teeth clenched, as if she was heading to the battlefield.
"What happened?"
Caleb's eyes flashed with suspicion.
He remembered Ava crying secretly in the room before the dinner. The more he thought about it, the more he felt that something was wrong. It was only two months away from leaving Birch Family, and he didn't want anything to happen during these two months.
"Hey, it's Caleb. You wanted me to come back, right..."
Caleb suddenly made a call. "I need to know Ava's location within three minutes."
