Love after divorce: Ex regrets divorce Chapter 1 Divorce

ELEANOR'S POV

With each passing moment, I felt his dark and piercing gaze bore into my soul, his patience running thin.

Quickly, I suppressed the pain and signed the papers then I pushed it slightly to him.

Desmond took the papers and scanned the document with meticulous care as if confirming if I truly signed the papers.

After he had exited the room, I collapsed onto a chair and rubbed my heart that clenched at the thought of the divorce.

Picking up my phone, I dialed my best friend's line who answered the call at the first ring. "Taylor, please can you pick me up at the house now?" I asked with my voice choking as I talked.

"What's the matter?" Taylor asked, his voice laced with concern.

"I'm fine," I'll explain everything to you when we meet, I said dismissively.

I went ahead to pack up my belongings into my box ensuring I did not take a dime from Desmond's house and waited for Taylor to arrive.

Taylor arrived in an hour .

"What's going on ?" Taylor inquired after I told him about my divorce.

"Ele, you know you can always confide in me and my doors are always open to you" Taylor told me.

I thanked Taylor for always being there for me though I felt guilty that I am always a bother to him.

Due to my father's betrayal, I couldn't go back to my family as my father was the mastermind behind my predicament, so I was left with no choice than to move in with Taylor.

Few days later, Taylor wrapped my thin and fragile body in a tight embrace, willingly to let me go. I chuckled as I deliberately cleared my vocals to grab his attention.

After a while, I was freed from Taylor's grip. I thanked him as I took my luggage and went over to the waiting line to board my flight.

I looked down from the plane with a glint of sadness in my eyes at the city that held lots of memories to me.

Hours later, the long flight came to an end when the plane landed in China.

I dislike long travels, but I had to go on this one to heal and take a break from all the dramas in New York.

I breathed a sigh of relief as I got my luggage at the baggage claim area and exited the arrivals gate.

Thankfully, Taylor made arrangements for someone to pick me up at the airport and help me around the city till I'm conversant with the city.

I saw a young, beautiful lady holding a placard with my name on it. I walked up to her and introduced myself as we went to the car park.

"China is so vibrant and stunning!"I exclaimed, feeling the gentle breeze chilling my skin with excitement as I threw my hands into the air to feel the gush of wind run through my face.

For once, I felt a sense of freedom and contentment that I've not had seeped through me as I took in the new breath around me.

Taylor has always known how to put smiles on my face. I requested him to get an affordable Villa for me to stay in for the meantime as I intended on enrolling in a college again and developing myself but he went ahead to buy the villa over for me and also refurbished the villa to my taste.

The documents and keys were evidence for this great gift. I couldn't afford to take this huge gift from him without repaying him back for his kindness.

I spent my few weeks in China freelancing while searching for a suitable school with a cheap tuition fee for me to enroll in. I took a lot of tests in a lot of colleges hoping to get accepted into one.

My dream has always been to complete my college and get my degree but my scheming father didn't give me the opportunity to complete my college education, which I dropped out of due to lack of funds.

These past few days, I have been having morning sickness and nausea. After I became unconscious in the bathroom, I decided to visit the doctor for a check-up.

Series of tests were run on me, I anxiously waited for the results to be ready.

"Excuse me Miss, can you join me in the consultation room please?" The doctor requested.

Anxiously, I followed the doctor into his office and took a seat.

"Your results are ready, Miss and you are medically fit."

I asked the doctor what was wrong and what could be the cause of those symptoms with worries evident in my voice.

I hate to fall sick as I wasn't a fan of medications or injections, so I really prayed in my heart that it shouldn't be anything complicated.

My heart kept pounding as I looked at the doctor flipping through the pages of my files with meticulous care. The suspense was too much for me to bear, so I had to break the silence.

"Doctor, please can you tell me what my result says?" I asked, my voice filled with desperation.

The doctor opted to reveal the result to me with my husband.

"Miss please I would love to reveal this result to you when you are with your husband because of clinical antics," the doctor stated.

I explained to him that I'm divorced and do not have a family for now as he could go ahead to interpret the result to me.

"Miss! As I said earlier, you're medically fit but rather your test results proves that you are two weeks pregnant!"

"Wait! What?."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I went to the New York City Clerk's office to handle a simple administrative matter, but the woman behind the glass handed me a nightmare instead. It was a certified marriage license from Clark County, Nevada, filed exactly three months ago. My vision blurred as I read the name in the spouse field: Baxter Noel. I was legally married to the ruthless billionaire whose legal team was currently suing me for intellectual property theft and trying to destroy my career. I remembered the conference in Las Vegas and a drink that tasted far too sweet, followed by a twelve-hour black hole in my memory that I had chalked up to exhaustion. When I sought help at my family's estate, my stepmother and sister didn't offer comfort; they stole my passport, shredded my clothes, and framed me for academic plagiarism to strip away my university fellowship. Even Baxter himself looked me in the eye with cold indifference, claiming he didn't know me and promising to have me arrested for fraud if I ever showed him that document again. Within twenty-four hours, I was homeless, jobless, and being hunted by the most powerful man in the city. I couldn't understand why a man who "eats people for breakfast" would be caught in the same trap as a struggling scientist like me. The confusion turned to pure terror when I looked at the witness signature on the license: Gene Mcclain. My mother, who was supposed to have died in a car crash ten years ago, had signed that paper with a fresh, trembling hand only ninety days ago. "I am holding a grenade, and I have no idea when the pin was pulled." Standing in the biting November wind with nothing but a laptop and a marriage license, I realized I was just a pawn in a much deadlier game. I stopped running and began to fight back, determined to use my unwanted status as the billionaire's wife to uncover the truth about the mother who came back from the dead.
