In the Arms of the Enemy Chapter 1 A Dangerous Encounter

The gala was just like other events: a fancy gathering in a decorated room, filled with beautiful dresses, tailored suits, and the scent of quality wine. Izzy Moretti wished she could escape every minute of it.

She could see her brother Giovanni, far across the room, engrossed in an animated discussion with several of the family's associates. She could guess already what the topic was going to be: more business, more threats, and more deals sealed with a handshake. Her family existed in a constant realm of power, betrayal, and an unspoken understanding that if you didn't play the game, you were dead.

Promising herself that she would never be like them was the one vow Izzy kept. But there she stood, surprisingly at such a place as no one else ever anticipated in a black gown of value surpassing the annual salaries of most people, playing the role she had never wanted to play.

One of the men in the group stood with his back to the far wall scanning the crowd and when she looked up, fixing their gaze at once, his own recognition hit her like an electric shock.

Santino DeLuca.

The heir to the DeLuca crime family. A name she had heard spoken in both fear and respect. He was a shadow in her life for as long as she could remember-always there, never too far from the chaos her family was involved in. Still, she'd never seen him face to face.

Izzy quickly turned back to her glass, pretending not to notice the way his eyes seemed glued to hers. But there was something hypnotic in Santino, something perilous that made her feel simultaneously safe and insecure around him.

A soft voice pulled her from her thoughts.

"Izzy," came the low murmur from her side. Turning, she found Sofia Romano, Santino's enforcer, and a childhood friend of his. Sofia was everything Izzy wasn't: cold, calculating, and completely loyal to the DeLuca family.

"You're staring at him," Sofia said, her keen gaze not leaving Santino for a second. "Be careful, or you might give a wrong impression."

"I wasn't staring," Izzy lied, forcing a smile. "Just... noticing."

Sofia raised an eyebrow. "Awareness of his presence or awareness of his gaze on you?"

Before Izzy could answer, a familiar voice called out her name.

"Izzy!" Giovanni burst out of the crowd, his presence impossible to ignore. He was tall and had their father's dark eyes, as well as the same defined jawline. But where their father had wielded sheer brute force, Giovanni had mastered the art of domination by cleverness. A very dangerous combination.

She forced a smile. "Giovanni. Enjoying the party?"

"As much as I ever do," he said dryly, glancing toward Santino. "What are you doing over here with Sofia? Stay away from him."

Izzy frowned. "From Santino? Why?"

"Don't play dumb. The DeLucas are our enemies, Izzy. Even looking at him is a problem." Giovanni lowered his voice to a growl. "He's been trying to encroach on our territory. We need to steer clear of him and his family."

"I'm not a kid, Giovanni," Izzy shot back, her voice angry. "I can choose who to talk to."

"Not in this world," Giovanni snapped, his eyes ice. "In this world, your choices are taken from you."

Izzy gritted her teeth, wanting to shout back. Being called a kid was the last thing she wanted, especially when it involved stuff she knew all too well. But before she could say anything, the room changed somehow. A faint shift, a species of tension that simply couldn't be ignored.

And then, Santino DeLuca was standing right before them.

"Izzy," he said smoothly, his voice a velvet whisper sending a shiver down her spine. He wasn't looking at Giovanni. His eyes were all for her.

It's been a while. She took a deep breath to stay calm.

"Has it?" she asked, her tone calm while inside her chest raced.

Santino smiled slightly, then the glint of amusement appeared in his eyes. "You don't remember when we last met?"

Izzy tried to remember, but the only hazy memories she had of the DeLucas were just that, vague and distant - whispers of deals, threats, power struggles. Her family had always kept her away from those dealings. But Luca, the infamous heir, was a different story.

She said, "I don't think we've met before," even though she knew she was lying. She remembered his name from a tense, fearful night many years ago.

But it's not like she was about to tell him that.

"Funny," Santino said, his smile deepening, "I remember you."

Giovanni tensed beside her, his body suddenly brimming with hostility. "What do you want, DeLuca?"

Santino's gaze shifted to Giovanni, and his face grew more frigid. "A conversation only. Nothing more. Nothing less."

Izzy's stomach churned. She knew Santino's type; he didn't do anything without an agenda and her brother was not the type to entertain any such conversation.

"We don't have time for your games, DeLuca," Giovanni said sharply. "You are not wanted here."

Unperturbed, Santino raised his hand. "I am not here for your business, Giovanni. I am here for hers."

Izzy's chest tightened. "For me?" she said, in a voice which was barely above a whisper.

His gaze never left her. "Yes, I want to speak with you, Izzy. Alone."

The statement hung in the air, pregnant with meaning. Giovanni tightened his jaw, but before he could retort, Izzy turned to him and spoke in a steady yet emphatic tone.

"I'll be fine, Giovanni. You don't have to worry."

Giovanni warned her, "You don't know what you are getting into," his eyes showing his worry. She looked at him in a way that made him quiet; she was no longer a child.

"I'm not going anywhere with you," she said to Santino, her voice harsh but tinged with interest. "Not like this."

Luca's expression softened ever so slightly. "Fine. I'll wait until you're ready. But just know, Izzy, it's not if you're coming it's when."

As Luca turned to go, he left a single business card, folded into the drapes of her dress, a reminder that the DeLucas weren't simply an aspect of her world; they were already part of her destiny.

I stood at my mother's open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest's voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone-he brought Charla with him. He claimed she'd had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

The Silent Bride's Billion Dollar Contract

Landslide

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

Flash Marriage To My Best Friend's Father

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch-a titan of industry and my best friend's father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

Neglected Wife: Hidden Heiress's Cold Revenge

I stood in the pouring rain at my father-in-law's funeral, the heels of my black pumps sinking into the mud. I was Mrs. Vargas, the wife of New York's most powerful billionaire, yet I was standing at the edge of the crowd like a forgotten statue. Ten feet away, under the dry shelter of the family tent, my husband Hayes held another woman against his chest. It wasn't me he was whispering comfort to; it was Felicity, his late brother's widow and childhood sweetheart. The humiliation didn't end at the cemetery. Hayes moved Felicity and her son into our home, relegating me to the guest wing while she took over the primary suites. He watched silently as her son smashed the only photograph of my deceased parents, then demanded I apologize for "scaring" the boy with my reaction. When Felicity's negligence ruined a twelve-million-dollar family heirloom, Hayes had the audacity to ask me to use my own savings to buy her a "consolation" engagement ring. He treated me like a parasite, never realizing I was a brilliant scientist with a hidden fortune and three patents to my name. I realized then that our three-year marriage was a hollow farce. Hayes had never even touched me, claiming he wanted to "remain pure" for his memory of Felicity. I was nothing more than a business merger, a smudge on the lens of the perfect family portrait he was building with another man's widow. The breaking point came during a lethal blizzard. Hayes promised to accompany me to my family's mandatory gala-a tradition where my absence meant a death sentence. But at the last second, he stood me up to stay home and tend to Felicity's stubbed toe. Left alone to face the wrath of the Santos Matriarch, I was forced to kneel in the freezing snow as punishment until my lungs began to fail and my vision blurred. Just as the darkness started to take me, a black Maybach smashed through the iron gates. My exiled brother, the man the world calls "The Wolf," stepped out of the storm to reclaim what Hayes had discarded. Hayes thought I was a helpless doll who couldn't survive a day without his trust fund, but he's about to find out what happens when you let a Santos daughter freeze.
