Chapter 1 The proposal

The Proposal

Themes: Choices and Consequences

Sophie whispered, her brows tightening as the tall man in front of her remained stationary, "You're blocking my view."

Without hesitation, his sharp gray eyes met hers as he turned slightly. With a suave, almost sarcastic tone, he responded, "You should thank me, considering the quality of the artwork here."

Sophie's cheeks flushed, and she gripped her champagne flute more tightly. "Pardon me? Who do you believe you to be?

With ease, he reached out to her and said, "Adrian Blackwell," his voice as cold as his eyes.

A beat skipped across her heart. Adrian Blackwell. She was startled only by the name. The billionaire. The vicious business magnate that was the talk of the town. Although she had heard rumors about him at galleries and read about him, she had never anticipated really meeting him.

She shook his hand and said, almost against her will, "Sophie Archer." He held on tightly, as though he could read her mind.

His gaze shifted from her face to the painting behind her. "Your work is unique," he remarked, his eyes piercing. "But you don't seem to be sure of it."

Astonished, Sophie blinked. With her cheeks flushed, she yelled, "I didn't ask for your opinion."

A man's voice broke the tension before she could continue. "Well, well, if Sophie Archer isn't the one. Are you still attempting to succeed?

Sophie turned to face the voice, her blood boiling. Jason was the one. An old friend who now serves as a mocking reminder of her previous shortcomings.

Adrian made no hesitation. He became as cold as ice. "Are you, too?"

Jason stumbled, obviously surprised. He muttered, "Just... an old acquaintance," as he shuffled away from Adrian's icy stare.

Sophie shot him one last look before turning back to Adrian. He wasn't backing down, not even for a second. His gaze focused onto hers again. "Dinner. Tomorrow. Seven o'clock."

Sophie's thoughts whirled. "Pardon me?" The news she had just heard was unbelievable.

Adrian's eyes remained fixed. There was something in his flat voice when he remarked, "We have something to discuss." An order. "Avoid being late."

He left her standing there with her heart thumping in her chest without waiting for her answer.

There was silence in the restaurant, and their table was shadowed by the gentle flicker of candlelight. With a glass of wine in his hand and his stance as stiff as ever, Adrian sat across from Sophie. Sophie's fingers twitched uncertainly as she hardly touched her own glass.

"Well, what about tomorrow?" Her voice was tight as she started.

Adrian's eyebrows went up. "I'm happy you concurred."

With a tiny tremble in her voice, Sophie stated, "I'm still trying to wrap my head around it." "A contract for marriage? Is this a joke of some sort?

His gaze never left hers as he leaned back. "This is no joke. Consider it an agreement that benefits both parties. You must be financially independent. I need a wife.

In an attempt to comprehend the outrageousness of his remarks, Sophie froze and put her palm to her neck. Her brows narrowed in suspicion as she queried, her voice barely above a whisper, "Why me?"

His eyes did not meet hers, but he gave her a faint smile. "You're... straightforward. No scandals. No luggage. And to be honest, I think you're fascinating.

Sophie couldn't decide whether to scream or laugh. For years, she had struggled to support herself, and now this man was giving her everything-money, security, and safety. But at what price?

"I don't," she paused. "I don't comprehend. What makes you want to wed me?

His mouth twitched up. "Because I am certain that you will play the game." No conditions. There are no surprises.

The weight of the offer was pressing down on Sophie's bones, causing tightness in her shoulders. "You truly believe that I would just what? Do you agree with this? Money, for what?

Adrian's eyes softened, but it was calculated and purposeful. "Sophie, it's more than simply money. It's safety. For us both.

She glanced down at her hands, which were shaking. "I need time to reflect."

Adrian's voice was too calm when he said, "Take as much time as you need." "But keep in mind that my offers aren't permanent."

As Sophie assimilated the words, her mind was racing with temptation and uncertainty, and her heart was pounding. However, the thought of being stuck in her current situation and fighting to maintain her artistic profession tore at her.

"I'll inform you," she muttered.

The sound of the phone buzzing on the counter reverberated throughout the little flat, which was dimly illuminated. Sophie's mind would not settle, so she paced back and forth. She looked at the contract on the table, which stated unequivocally that there would be financial assistance, complete discretion, and a one-year marriage.

Another overdue notification from the landlord buzzed through her phone. Sophie sighed in frustration and put the phone back on the counter. The art market wasn't exactly booming, and she hadn't been able to pay her rent in months.

She inhaled deeply as she looked at the document once more. She was unsure about what to do. However, she couldn't continue in this manner. Adrian's offer might have been the solution. The sole solution.

Her chest constricted with anxiety, she dialed his number with trembling fingers. Before Adrian's steady, recognizable voice answered, the phone rang again.

"Yes?"

With the decision weighing heavily on her, Sophie muttered, "I... I'll do it."

The other person paused for a long moment before Adrian's soothing, silky voice returned. "Good decision. The next stages will be communicated to you by my helper.

After the call ended, Sophie stood with the phone to her ear and allowed the quiet to descend upon her. Just what had she consented to?

Uncertainty made her stomach turn, yet there was also a sense of relief. Something fresh, something she couldn't quite put her finger on.

As Adrian sat in his office, the space was filled with lengthy shadows from the faint light. On his desk, his fingers wandered aimlessly along the edge of a faded photograph. Sophie and the woman in the photo looked remarkably alike. With the same calculating expression, he examined the picture.

His voice was deep and thoughtful as he reclined in his chair. With the slightest smile pulling at his lips, he whispered, "Let's see how this plays out."

The game was only getting started.

"Let's get married," Mia declares, her voice trembling despite her defiant gaze into Stefan's guarded brown eyes. She needs this, even if he seems untouchable. Stefan raises a skeptical brow. "And why would I do that?" His voice was low, like a warning, and it made her shiver even though she tried not to show it. "We both have one thing in common," Mia continues, her gaze unwavering. "Shitty fathers. They want to take what's ours and give it to who they think deserves it." A pointed pause hangs in the air. "The only difference between us is that you're an illegitimate child, and I'm not." Stefan studies her, the heiress in her designer armor, the fire in her eyes that matches the burn of his own rage. "That's your solution? A wedding band as a weapon?" He said ignoring the part where she just referred to him as an illegitimate child. "The only weapon they won't see coming." She steps closer, close enough for him to catch the scent of her perfume, gunpowder and jasmine. "Our fathers stole our birthrights. The sole reason they betrayed us. We join forces, create our own empire that'll bring down theirs." A beat of silence. Then, Stefan's mouth curves into something sharp. "One condition," he murmurs, closing the distance. "No divorces. No surrenders. If we're doing this, it's for life" "Deal" Mia said without missing a beat. Her father wants to destroy her life. She wouldn't give him the pleasure, she would destroy her life as she seems fit. ................ Two shattered heirs. One deadly vow. A marriage built on revenge. Mia Meyers was born to rule her father's empire (so she thought), until he named his bastard son heir instead. Stefan Sterling knows the sting of betrayal too. His father discarded him like trash. Now the rivals' disgraced children have a poisonous proposal: Marry for vengeance. Crush their fathers' legacies. Never speak of divorce. Whoever cracks first loses everything. Can these two rivals, united by their vengeful hearts, pull off a marriage of convenience to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs? Or will their fathers' animosity, and their own complicated pasts tear their fragile alliance apart?
