A Night to Enternity Chapter 1 A Wedding to undo..

•CHAPTER ONE•

A wedding to undo..

Frozen in shock, I felt my eyes turning on their own with my breath caught in my throat. The room's warmth were no where to be found and all it was replaced with were the icy chills that seeped mercilessly into my bones.

Could anything be more shattering and nightmarish than stumbling upon a shocking truth exactly three days to your wedding?..

Just when the wedding you've been dreaming of is less than 72 hours away!!!!!!

My hands quivered as I stared at the lines in the letter I was holding.

'Since we couldn't afford to pay our debts, we've agreed to your alternative proposal – Give out our only daughter's hand in marriage to you. However, we need to deceive her into thinking she's marrying your son. She'ld never consent to marry someone of your age sir. I know you have no son but getting pictures of someone young and handsome will do. All we have to do is declare his false trip and convince her that he'll be coming home on the agreed wedding day'

Those dreadful words echoed in my head like it had been read out to me..

I couldn't be wrong!, That handwriting belonged to my father.

His damn signature is another evidence that the letter was his!!

"My parents are marrying me off to a man old enough to be my grandpa and not his son as they had claimed!" I screamed inwardly in both horror and shock..

"They had lied to me all this while" my lips shivered.

No..

Nooo!!

Someone wake me from this dream!..

I knew Gerald had no wife but I never knew about his intentions to marry me!.

Damn, I was his daughter's age mate!

My breathlessness intensified and my head began getting filled with glimpses of memories of how I'd spent my time admiring pictures of Gerald Bills' so-called son who doesn't even exist..

Oh yeah, the picture owner exist but the mentality that he was my groom had been an illusion I never suspected!

Arrgh!

"That old hag is my groom!" my mind worsened matters by recounting..

Oh heavens.. this can't be real!

So what?..

My boasting to my friends were useless?!

Wait.. the calls! They've all been with Gerald who possibly changed his voice systematically..!

"No wonder he had always refused a video call!.."

I grabbed my cloth tight, feeling my heart's terrible racing as everything began getting clear in my messed head..

"I'm doomed!" I mumbled breathlessly as the words dad said to me a few weeks ago rang in my head..

"It's no longer a news that we are indebted to the Bills family. The only alternative is to have a permanent merge with them and so, you'll be getting married to Gerald Bills only son, Derek to cover up our debts. " he had slipped the picture of the most handsome man I'd ever seen in my hands..

And the stupid me had jumped on the offer, smiling sheepishly like a bloated goat and thinking I'd gotten the tall, rich and handsome man of my dreams!

How could dad do this to me?..

Even mum?!

"My son, Derek would be returning to Russia on the agreed wedding date and you'll be meeting him at the altar.."

I'd been blinded by excitement and some damn feelings I grew that Gerald Bills words never bothered me.

"Gawd..." I gulped hard, grunting in disgust as I thought of his yellowed-teeth and irritating coughs..

That old man has been my groom all this while!,

Arrgh!

"Adele?.." I suddenly heard a familiar voice say from the door and I quickly slipped the paper into my pockets, turning towards the door.

There was no way I was going to expose my discovery..!

Not until I successfully stop the wedding from holding..

As expected, Jemimah walked in. She was my supposed to be my sister in-law, Gerald's daughter.

Apparently, she was aware of the mischief!...

I mean, she was the only child of her father!

"Hi Jemimah.." I forced myself to fake a smile

"Dad informed me of your presence when I called" she said and still with the forced smile, I nodded.

"Yeah. I came to give him the bill of expenses drafted by the event planner and since he wasn't home, he asked me to drop it in the letter box in his study room" I explained, trying my best not to show the hatred I'd now grown for their family in the last one minute.

"Oh, okay. I need to show you something" she replied, grabbing my wrist and pulling me out of the room.

"Your shoes got delivered already and you need to try them on" she informed as we walked towards a room located at the end of the lobby..

To hell with the damn shoes, I'm definitely not going to walk down the aisle to wed an old man!.

"Oh Adeline, all thanks to your curiosity to know what's written in at least, one of the hundreds of letters in that box, else you wouldn't have known this!" A voice in me winced and I pressed my lips together.

"Dad and mum must pay for this. This wedding mustn't be held!" I thought.

"Zara heels as demanded.." Jemimah smiled as she pulled me to a seat in the room, unsealing the shoe box.

The shoe fitted me perfectly but surprisingly, I didn't like it a single bit, certainly because of my new discovery.

"You'll surely make a good bride Adele" she smiled, staring at the elegance of the shoes in my feet.

"Of course but definitely not to your father, never!," I replied within me.

"I need to get going now, I have to meet the fashion designer to wear my dress and confirm its fitting before the designs are being finalized" I informed, getting up and pulling off the shoes.

My discovery made the house seem suffocating to me and I just couldn't wait to be out..

"Oh dear, I would have loved to come with you but I just got back and I haven't made dad's meal yet. He doesn't eat from the maids you know" she pouted childishly and I nodded..

"It's fine, no qualms" my response contrasted with the 'I don't want your company, either' on my mind.

I left their house after forcing myself to give her a warm embrace and on getting to the parking lot, I wasted no time in driving out immediately.

My heart didn't for a second stop racing and I could feel my body shivering lightly at the feeling the discovery gave..

How could everyone be this mischievous?!..

I couldn't dial anyone's number, not even my best friend's because the discovery was so embarrassing.

All I could do was drive with tears streaming down my face..

..and then, turn on the music to have some beats ram inside my messed skull.

I was shattered, pained and broken. My mind worsened matters by reminding me of the letter's content and how my efforts to have a better wedding had gone in vain..

"Unlucky me.."

The music suddenly stopped after a while and switched to the breaking news session but I wasn't listening until a part of the journalist's words attracted me.

"... and has now declared that his marriage of ten years be divorced due to his wife's infidelity sex video that went viral and threatened to destroy his reputation"

I knitted my brows, while a little part of me wondered why those words refused to stop re-echoing in my head.

"Wait.." I suddenly muttered aloud, losing my focus on the road in bits.

"Divorce.."

"Infidelity video.." I muttered again

".. went viral" my eyes slowly widened as an idea popped into my head.

Oh my..!

"I can stop the wedding by making a sex video of mine go viral!!. He'll definitely want to cancel the wedding because of his threatened reputation!" my gaze expanded more.

"Perfect!!" I screamed out a bit, laughing out loud and wiping my fucking tears.

Damn!

Why didn't I think of this before?

"I can do it right?.. having a nightstand with someone is better than being forever trapped with an old man!. I can do it!" I nodded, smiling sheepishly.

At this point, my mind was literally not on the road where I was driving. My brain was the only thing doing the job.

"But what happens to your own reputation? You're definitely not going to disgrace yourself publicly, will you?" a haunting question suddenly came and my smile slowly faded ..

I sighed in defeat..

"Messed up.." I hissed, driving with one hand as I waved off the plan.

My phone beeped a few seconds later and i looked to check it, ready to transfer aggression to anything unworthy of my attention.

"To hell with you all"

I hissed again, tossing it away on seeing that it was a message from a business group. Dad had added me to the group to help him on an ongoing project with his investors and yes, Gerald was also included.

"It's high time I left the group. Dad can't keep using me as a pawn!" I sighed out, picking the device again..

But then, a voice came around..

"What about sending the video to this group? It's better than making it go viral on social media. Gerald's business partners are there and it will definitely threaten his reputation.. no one would like to attend his wedding"

My eyes flew madly wide..

Wait..

"Oh heavens, why am I this smart?!!!!" ..

"Perfect!!!!!" I grinned, giggling.

"You know what, I need to drive to the hotel now, I need an escort for the task tonight!" I said out, taking a sharp turn thoughtlessly..

And that was it..

The foolish action of mine that made me hit a car.

"Fuck!" I shrieked at the loud bang..

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.
