Chapter One: The Beginning of Alesther's Troubles

"Mum, I'm home!" I exclaimed, dropping my bag on the floor as I rushed into the house, searching for my mother. "Mum! Mum! Where are you?" I called out, my voice filled with concern.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from her room, like the shattering of glass. My heart skipped a beat.

I ran upstairs, my heart racing, and my mind consumed with worst case scenarios.

I burst into her room, and my world came crashing down. Mum lay motionless on the floor, surrounded by shards of broken glass. I sa5 a piece of the bottle,I quickly recognized it as the one containing the chemical meant for killing rodents. A wave of horror washed over me.

"No! No! No! No! No!" I screamed, tears running down my face.

I dropped to my knees beside her. "Mum, get up! Please, wake up!" I begged, shaking her lifeless body.

I then checked her pulse, but there was nothing. She wasn't breathing. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of despair.

"Nooooo!" I wailed, clutching her body to mine. "Mum, please don't leave me! Not like Daddy did three years ago! Please mom, wake up!"

In a desperate, grief-stricken moment, I spotted a sharp piece of glass on the floor. Without thinking, I picked it up and sliced my vein, feeling the warm blood gush out. "If mom leaves, I too", I thought deep within.

Just as I felt myself fading away, I heard a voice behind me.

"Alesther, no!" David exclaimed, rushing towards me, catching my already failing body just before I could reach the ground.

I looked up, my vision blurring, and saw David's face filled with worry, and just Then, everything went black.

David's POV

As I walked up the path to Alesther's house, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. I had been away for three months, working on a research project in Shanghai, and I had missed her terribly. I had always had feelings for her, but I had never mustered the courage to tell her.

As I approached the house, I saw the front door wide open, was there a robber here, I wondered within. With great concern, I ran into the house, just then, I heard a faint cry. My heart skipped a beat.

I rushed towards the sound. I burst through the front door and ran upstairs, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios.

I reached Alesther's mom's room just in time to see Alesther slumping to the ground, her wrist sliced open. I lunged forward, catching her in mid-air before she hit the ground.

"Alesther, no!" I exclaimed, holding her tightly as I applied pressure to her wound. She was limp in my arms, her eyes closed.

I quickly scanned the room, taking in the scene. Alesther's mom lay motionless on the floor, a broken glass bottle nearby. I felt a wave of anger and sadness wash over me.

Without hesitation, I scooped Alesther up in my arms and rushed downstairs, careful not to jostle her. I grabbed my phone and dialed 911 as I rushed out of the house.

As I waited for the ambulance to arrive, I held Alesther close, trying to comfort and revive her. She was still unconscious, but I could feel her heartbeat, and that gave me hope.

The ambulance arrived quickly, and the paramedics rushed over to take Alesther from me, also taking her mom along. I rode with her to the hospital, holding her hand and talking to her, even though she couldn't respond.

As we arrived at the hospital, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Alesther was going to be okay. She had to be.

I sat in the waiting room, my mind racing with thoughts and emotions. I had always loved Alesther, but now, I felt a deeper connection to her. I was determined to be there for her, to support her through this difficult time.

As I waited for news from the doctor, I couldn't help but think about the future. I knew that Alesther would need time to grieve, to heal. But I was willing to wait, to be patient. I would do anything to make her happy, to help her through this difficult time.

As I sat in the reception room, still in shock from the incident, I couldn't help but think about how fate had brought me to thi

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
