I'm Izzy, an ordinary girl working as a full-time nurse throughout the week. On the weekends, I go out clubbing with my colleagues. One night, I chose to leave the club early on my own. I was attacked as I passed by an ally, so I screamed for help. A stranger who I later learn is billionaire Luke DeVille, comes to my aid. He was stunning, and I owed him a lot, though I doubted I'd ever see him again. One night though, I got invited to his VIP suite at the club. All I wanted to do was thank him, yet one thing lead to another and I found myself naked in his arms. However, I hadn't felt bad about it. I had never slept with anyone better. So what was wrong? Intoxicated, I hadn't even considered wearing protection. Now, here I am two months later, expecting his child... And he's clueless.

The Billionaire's Desire: His Baby Chapter 1 A Heart in Chains

Luke's POV

"This is the life!" As I swept my gaze across the dazzling blue ocean, I yelled in a sing-song voice. "Don't we really have it made?

"Yes, boss, you do."

I turned to face James, my friend and bouncer, who grinned broadly at me. I understood what that meant. He believed that I was the only one with the world at my feet. He didn't seem to understand that he had the entire world at his disposal by working for me. He was one of the best, and I gave what I had to guys who deserved it.

"James." He was big like a brick shit house and weighed at least 300 pounds, so it was difficult for me to throw my arm over his shoulder. "Look at this: we're on a yacht, enjoying drinks while sailing the ocean in the blazing sun, surrounded by as many women as your eye could possibly see. How many jobs would let you enjoy yourself this much?"

"Luke, you're right. I don't mean to seem ungrateful. It's simply..." His eyes dropped to the floor, and I took a step back to look at him. I needed to find out what was going on in that large, lovely mind of his. "You have it all: you're a handsome man with stunning green eyes and the height that any man would desire. Every woman is flinging herself at you."

"Mostly for my money." I shrugged wryly in an attempt to appear at least modest. "These broads wouldn't even look at me twice if I were skint."

"Oh, I seriously doubt it. No one pays attention to me because-well, take a look at me."

"Dude, that ass of yours is enormous. It's your lack of confidence." As I talked, I raised my arms in front of me. "All you have to do is know what to say!"

James fell silent. He was clearly taking it all in, so I swallowed back the beer I was holding and looked around at the group of beauties to give him some space to think. Although I didn't actually know any of them-I had a guy who would bring attractive women to my events when I needed company-I already knew that each and every one of them would be delighted to spend some time with me alone.

It was the authority that accompanied the DeVille name. Every single one of them was giving me a seductive look. I was well-known for my wealth and, if I was being completely honest with myself, my attractive appearance, so it was understandable.

They all wanted me, and it was up to me to take my pick of the lot.

"I suppose," James began to say once more, drawing my focus back to him, "I want more than just a hookup. I truly want to spend the rest of my life with someone." His dark brown eyes gleamed with curiosity as he fixed me with an intent gaze. "Do you never get that feeling? Do you never want a bit more?"

"You mean, like want a wife?" I sneered as if the concept were completely absurd, which is just how I felt about it. "You know me, come on. I'd rather not be bound to anyone. I'm only thirty-three. Why would I want to settle for just one when all these women are vying for my attention?"

"But... No, it's not important." James's gaze shifted away from me. It appeared he had something more to say, but I'd have to force it out of him first.

"No, go ahead and share your thoughts with me. You are aware of how much I respect your opinions. I hope you understand that you are my best pal."

Was being so close to one of my colleagues sad? But, did I really give a damn? James was an amazing guy, and that was all I cared about.

"Well, it seems to me that there is more to it than that. I believe there are other factors besides women that are preventing you from getting married."

I took a big breath and looked up at the clear sky, wanting a moment to gather my thoughts. It was fortunate that James was my buddy, but at times it was really difficult to maintain the cheerful, optimistic self-image when he could see right through to the depths of my soul. "Well, I guess you're right."

"I believed so. Has this something to do with Jason?"

Jason, ugh. My amazing brother. Alright, he did not deserve what happened to him, even though he occasionally acted a little crazy and didn't always behave the way I wanted him to. It kept messing me up to just think about it.

"Well, I suppose so. The fact that the murder is still unsolved really fucks me up. Despite sinking a whole lot of money into my own investigations, nothing has surfaced. As if it had happened yesterday instead of three years ago, I could plainly see the image of his icy, dead, battered, and bruised body when I briefly closed my eyes. I didn't think I would ever get over that.

"I apologize, boss. I have no doubt that you will eventually get your answers..."

Unintentionally, I interrupted, "And then there's losing my father, that still hurts. Even though it happened five years ago, I'm still really damaged by that unexpected heart attack."

I felt a little lighter on my chest, but I hadn't anticipated getting so deep on this beautiful day. It felt great and terrible all at once to talk about my problems. "I don't want to get married and then sentence a child to life in this broken world. It's simply not right or fair."

The air was dense with pregnant pause. I had nothing left to say, and James was at a loss for words too. I had to keep in mind that I was still alive even though everything had happened, and it was terrible. I occasionally lost myself in my thoughts to the point that I forgot all about that. Since they were not chanced to survive, it was my responsibility to live while I was here.

It was time to talk about something else.

My five-year-old daughter was dying in the ICU, her heartbeat replaced by the continuous, electronic scream of a flatline. I gripped her cold hand, my throat sealed shut by a terror so absolute I couldn't even cry out. I dialed my husband Grayson's private number, the one reserved only for me and his assistants. He declined the call instantly. A second later, a text buzzed against my palm: "In a meeting. Do not disturb. Stop calling." Five miles away, Grayson was at a luxury gala, adjusting his silk tie and laughing with Belle Escobar. He told her I was just being "dramatic" and using our daughter's "fever" as an excuse to avoid the event. He had no idea Effie's heart had already stopped. When I finally reached our penthouse, soaked from the rain and carrying Effie's small socks in a plastic bag, Grayson didn't even look at me. He snapped at me for ruining the hardwood floors and asked if I'd left Effie with the nanny just to "feel sorry for myself." Three days later, while I buried our daughter in a small, lonely ceremony, Grayson was at the Hamptons. Belle posted a photo of him golfing with the caption: "A mental health day with the boys." He didn't even attend the funeral, but he returned home demanding I clear out Effie's room to make a study for Belle's son. The injustice burned through me until there was nothing left. I swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, desperate to join my daughter. But instead of the darkness, I woke up to blinding lights and the scent of Grayson's expensive cologne. I was standing in a ballroom, wearing a blue silk dress I had already burned. Above me, a banner read: "Happy 5th Birthday Kaiden & Effie." I was back, exactly one year before the tragedy. This time, I wasn't going to be the grieving wife. I was going to be their worst nightmare.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.
