SYNOPSIS: Struggling to make ends meet, Kate Grey has all but given up on her dream of becoming an actress-until a mysterious billionaire, Jared Cole, offers her a deal too tempting to refuse. If she agrees to pose as his companion at glittering galas and high-society events for three months, he'll bankroll her career. The catch? Jared isn't just looking for a pretty face, he's trying to save his shattered reputation, and Kate is his ticket to redemption. Jared's polished charm conceals a world of secrets, and as Kate steps into his opulent and wealthy life, the lines between business and desire blur. Beneath his polished exterior lies a man grappling with loneliness, guilt and an unfulfilled need for genuine connection. For Kate, it's a chance to finally chase her dreams, but the deeper she's pulled into Jared's world, the more she realizes his offer isn't as simple as it seems. As the events grow increasingly elaborate, Kate finds herself drawn into Jared's opulent yet mysterious world-a place where wealth hides deadly secrets, and power comes with a price. But when she discovers the real reason behind Jared's generous offer, she's faced with a choice, walk away and protect her heart, or risk everything for a man who's learning to love for the first time, and how does she explain her name on a marriage certificate signed four years ago? In a whirlwind of passion, betrayal, and self-discovery, THE COST OF LOVE AND PASSION explores the question: Can love bridge the gap between two lives built on secrets?

THE COST OF LOVE AND PASSION Chapter 1 A STRANGER'S DEAL

KATE'S POV

The clinking of glasses and hum of muted conversation echoed through the dimly lit interior of King's Bar. The scent of cheap whiskey and fried food clung to the air, mingling with the faint notes of a jazz tune struggling to compete with the rowdy chatter. Kate Grey, that is me, balancing a tray of drinks on my arm, as I weaved through the crowd like a thread through a needle, my movements quick and precise. The worn-out sneakers I wore squeaked against the sticky floor as I approached table four, forcing a tired smile onto my face.

"Here you go. Two whiskey sours and a beer," I announced, setting the drinks down with practiced efficiency.

"Finally," one of the men muttered, his tone laced with irritation. I bit back a sharp retort, opting instead for a polite nod before retreating toward the bar.

The night was dragging on, as it always did. The hours blurred together, punctuated only by the occasional barked orders from my manager, Carl, and the never-ending demands of impatient customers. At least my shift was almost over.

"Grey!" Carl's voice thundered across the bar, drawing the attention of several patrons. I winced and turned to face him.

"Yes, Carl?" I replied, forcing my tone to remain neutral.

"We've got a VIP in booth seven. Make sure he's taken care of," Carl barked, his meaty finger pointing toward the far corner of the bar.

My gaze followed his gesture, landing on a lone figure seated in the booth. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored navy suit that screamed wealth, his posture relaxed but commanding. Shadows played across his sharp features, accentuating the icy blue grey eyes that surveyed the room with quiet intensity.

Great. Just what I needed; a rich patron to cap off my night. I plastered on my best customer service smile and made my way over.

"Good evening, sir. Welcome to King's Bar. Can I get you something to drink?" I asked, my voice polite, almost pitchy.

The man looked up, his piercing gaze locking onto mine. For a moment, I felt as though he could see straight through me, unraveling my carefully guarded composure.

"Whiskey. Neat," he said, his voice low and smooth, carrying a hint of authority.

"Coming right up," I replied, retreating to the bar to fetch his drink. I couldn't shake the feeling that his eyes lingered on me as I walked away.

When I returned, the man accepted the glass with a nod of thanks. "What's your name?"

I hesitated. "Kate," I answered cautiously.

"Kate," he repeated, as if testing the weight of my name on his tongue. "I'm Jared Cole."

The name struck a faint chord of recognition in my head. I'd heard of him before; a tech billionaire whose name often graced the headlines, though not always for the right reasons.

"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Cole," I said politely, unsure of where this conversation was headed.

"I've been watching you," he said, his tone as casual as if he were commenting on the weather.

I stiffened. "Excuse me?"

"Your work ethic." He quickly added, graciously, "You're efficient, professional. It's rare to see someone with that kind of drive in a place like this," Jared explained, his gaze steady.

"Thanks, I guess," I replied, unsure how to respond. Compliments weren't exactly common in my line of work.

"Why is that?" he asked just as I was about to head back, I stopped, smiled then looked back.

"Why is what?" I replied

Jared smiles, then he rephrased, "be sincere, if you weren't working here, where would you rather work, Miss Kate?"

This was a no brainer, the answer was always at the top of my brain, but somehow his poise and eloquence makes me forget even my name! I've never spoken with someone so refined, especially not in this shit hole.

Took me some seconds to interpret the question then I blurted out, "hollywood!"

"what?", he was confused

"sorry, acting. If I wasn't working here, I'd rather be acting. I've always wanted to be an actress, but life acted up instead and I find myself working here" I added with a nervous chuckle.

Why I was opening up to this total stranger is still a mystery to me, something about getting lost in his eyes, I guess.

"I'm not thinking straight", I muttered to myself

Jared leaned forward slightly, his eyes never leaving mine. "I have a proposition for you."

I raised an eyebrow. "A proposition?"

"Yes. But not here," he said, pulling a sleek business card from his pocket and sliding it across the table. "Meet me tomorrow at this address. Noon. It's an opportunity you won't want to miss."

I stared at the card, my instincts screaming caution. Deals that seemed too good to be true usually were.

"I'll think about it," I said, tucking the card into my apron.

Jared nodded, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I hope you do."

As I walked away, I couldn't shake the feeling that my life was about to change in ways I couldn't yet comprehend.

The next day, I stood outside a sleek glass skyscraper, the business card Jared had given me clutched in my hand. I'd spent the night debating whether to come, weighing my skepticism against my curiosity. Ultimately, my dwindling bank account and unfulfilled dreams had tipped the scale.

The lobby was as opulent as the building's exterior, all marble floors and shimmering chandeliers. A receptionist directed me to the top floor, where Jared was waiting in a sprawling office that boasted floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline.

"Kate!" Jared greeted me, rising from behind a massive oak desk. "Thank you for coming."

"I'm not sure why I'm here," I admitted, my voice steady despite the nerves twisting in my stomach.

Jared gestured for me to sit. "I'll get straight to the point. I need someone to accompany me to a series of high-profile events over the next three months. Someone who can play the role of my fiancée."

I blinked, caught off guard by the audacity of his request. "You want me to pretend to be your fiancée?"

"Yes," Jared confirmed, his tone matter-of-fact. "In exchange, I'll provide financial backing for your acting career-classes, auditions, even living expenses. Whatever you need to succeed."

I stared at him, my mind racing. It was an outrageous proposition, one that sounded more like the plot of a movie than real life.

"Why me?" I asked finally.

"You're not part of my world," Jared said simply. "You're grounded, authentic. People will believe us because you're nothing like the women I usually date."

I hesitated. "And what's in it for you?"

"Redemption," Jared admitted, his voice quieter. "My reputation has taken a hit, and I need someone like you to help rebuild it."

The honesty in his tone caught me off guard. Despite my reservations, there was something about Jared that made me want to trust him.

"And if I say no?" I asked, testing his reaction.

"Then you walk away, no strings attached," Jared said, leaning back in his chair. "But I think you'll say yes."

I bit my lip, my mind a whirlwind of doubt and possibility. The deal was risky, but so was the alternative, continuing to scrape by with no end in sight.

"Three months?" I asked.

Jared nodded. "Three months."

"And you'll fund my acting career?"

"Every step of the way," he promised.

I took a deep breath, my heart pounding. "Alright. I'm in."

Jared's lips curved into a satisfied smile. "Welcome to the team, K." Just like that I had gotten a nickname, I smiled nervously as I proceeded to the door.

As I left his office, I couldn't help but feel that I'd just made a deal with the devil- a rather handsome devil. But if it meant chasing my dreams, wasn't it worth the risk?

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband's Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn't find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn't even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father's legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn's party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara's health and managing every detail of Caden's empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I'd drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause-if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I'd forgotten.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I’ve returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders—the man I was told was a crippled recluse—intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I’d cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent—the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower’s security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy—Archibald’s secret son—wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald’s face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancĂ©e. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

My five-year-old daughter was dying in the ICU, her heartbeat replaced by the continuous, electronic scream of a flatline. I gripped her cold hand, my throat sealed shut by a terror so absolute I couldn't even cry out. I dialed my husband Grayson's private number, the one reserved only for me and his assistants. He declined the call instantly. A second later, a text buzzed against my palm: "In a meeting. Do not disturb. Stop calling." Five miles away, Grayson was at a luxury gala, adjusting his silk tie and laughing with Belle Escobar. He told her I was just being "dramatic" and using our daughter's "fever" as an excuse to avoid the event. He had no idea Effie's heart had already stopped. When I finally reached our penthouse, soaked from the rain and carrying Effie's small socks in a plastic bag, Grayson didn't even look at me. He snapped at me for ruining the hardwood floors and asked if I'd left Effie with the nanny just to "feel sorry for myself." Three days later, while I buried our daughter in a small, lonely ceremony, Grayson was at the Hamptons. Belle posted a photo of him golfing with the caption: "A mental health day with the boys." He didn't even attend the funeral, but he returned home demanding I clear out Effie's room to make a study for Belle's son. The injustice burned through me until there was nothing left. I swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, desperate to join my daughter. But instead of the darkness, I woke up to blinding lights and the scent of Grayson's expensive cologne. I was standing in a ballroom, wearing a blue silk dress I had already burned. Above me, a banner read: "Happy 5th Birthday Kaiden & Effie." I was back, exactly one year before the tragedy. This time, I wasn't going to be the grieving wife. I was going to be their worst nightmare.
