Chapter 1 One

Mary POV

Stepping out of my black Mercedes-Benz, my heels clicked on the marble floor as I walked into the office building. My eyes landed on my personal assistant Rachel, who greeted me with a smile on her face.

"Good morning ma'am, permit me to say you look absolutely beautiful today." I find myself giving her a quick smile, while my eyes looked around the building.

"Thank you very much for the compliment Rachel. I have a meeting with the marketing team in 15 minutes." I looked at my wrist watch. "So, let's go and work." I said with a shrug.

While we walked to the elevator, my eyes landed on a young man who was standing at the receptionist desk, he was filling out a job application and I could not help but notice his attractive features.

He had a dark messy hair, and wore a faded T-shirt, which brings his muscles out to the public for full display.

Never had anyone made me stopped to look at them for another minute, but there was something amazing about this man that I find it hard to point out.

What was he doing in my company all dressed up in a rugged dress?

When he turned around to look at me, I turned to the other side, where the elevator has been fully opened and Rachel stepped aside to allow me inside. We stepped into the elevator, with my attention still on the strange man across the lobby. Our eyes were locked in and he did not seem to break away, before the elevator door would close.

The memory of his piercing blue eyes sticked in my brain, and as the elevator opened ushering us into the hallway, my curiosity to meet him again increased. No one has ever given me this excitement in a very long time.

By the time we arrived at the office, Rachel handed over to me a cup of coffee she had made. I grabbed the coffee and took down the content, before stepping inside the board room.

When we arrived at the board room, the marketing team were all seated waiting for me, like I wanted it.

"Ma'am, the company has seen a significant drop in the areas of. advertisment. We cannot be sure if the audience like the new product, but there is need to make chamges to that." The marketing team leader revealed.

"Fix the media team, bring in a whole new staff that are ready to work under your department. We need to see the sales of these products rise in the coming week." I responded.

The rest of the meeting was simply about us discussing several marketing strategies to put in place for the coming week. During the discussion, my mind kept bugging me about the image of the stranger I had seen.

Once the meeting was slowly winding up, I checked my wrist watch and rose to my feet seeing it was time for my next schedule. "Very well everyone, I think the most important things have been covered and we can all call it a day."

While the marketing team all trooped out of the office, my eyes landed on the same stranger outside the board room speaking to Rachel.

For some reason, I find my heart beating very fast the moment out eyes landed on each other and this time. How can anyone have so much effect on me?

Rachel and the strange stepped into the office. "Ma'am, this is Mr. Smith." She revealed while turning to be young man. "He is here to apply for the post of Janitor."

"Nice to see you Smith." I commented.

"The pleasure is mine madam." His voice and the smile on his lips begins to make my heart melt down.

"Show Mr. Smith the HR department, they will take care of the application process." I instructed Rachel, who complied and turned to leave with Smith.

As they moved out of the room, I glanced at his direction and believe there was something about him that wants me to know more.

For the rest of the day, I find myself being distracted by the thoughts of Smih and what he stood out for. There was little or no explanation about the way he made me feel.

During lunch time, I chose to walk around the company to clear off my head from his image, when I find Smith pushing the Janitor's cart and his attention fixed on the door.

There is the suddenly urge I felt to walk up to him and engage him in a conversation. However, something held me back and it was unexplainable.

I could not tell if it was the fact that he is a mere employee or the fact that I was his boss, but whatever the reason, I chose to leave him for now.

As the day begins to draw to a close, I heard commotions outside my company and choose to go and find out what is happening, when I see Smith beating up one of the staffs.

"That is enough!" I ordered, and he let go. "Can someone tell me what is going on here before I take decision?" I asked, looking at everyone's face but they all looked away, except for Smith.

"Why are you beating a colleague of yours?" I questioned him, as the staff he had just laid out, slowly got back up to his feet, trying to dust his body off the dirt.

"He interrupted my work by making fun of me and I let the anger take control of me and took it out on him." His explanation seemed genuinely true because no one stopped him, neither did they complained about his activity.

"Come to my office immediately." I ordered him and turned to the rest of the staffs. "What are you all looking at? Back to work everybody!" I yelled and they all scramble across the place.

When we both arrived at my office, I walked back to my seat making myself comfortable with yet another cup of coffee.

I was at my own engagement party at the Sterling estate when the world started tilting. Victoria Sterling, my future mother-in-law, smiled coldly as she watched me struggle with a cup of tea that had been drugged to ruin me. Before I could find my fiancé, Ryan, a waiter dragged me into the forbidden West Wing and locked me in a room with Julian Sterling, the family’s "fallen titan" who had been confined to a wheelchair for years. The door burst open to a frenzy of camera flashes and theatrical screams. Victoria framed me as a seductress caught in the act, and Ryan didn't even try to listen to my pleas, calling me "cheap leftovers" before walking away with his pregnant mistress. When I turned to my own family for help, my father signed a document severing our relationship for a five-million-dollar payout from Julian. They traded me like a commodity without a second thought. I didn't understand why my own parents were so eager to sell me, or how Ryan could look at me with such disgust after promising me forever. I was a sacrifice, a pawn used to protect the family's offshore accounts, and I couldn't fathom how every person I loved had a price tag for my destruction. With nowhere left to go, I married Julian in a bleak ceremony at City Hall. He slid a heavy diamond onto my finger and whispered, "We have a war to start." That night, inside his secret penthouse, I watched the paralyzed man stand up from his wheelchair and activate a screen filled with the Sterling family's darkest secrets. The execution had officially begun.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.
