Chapter 1 The Family Reunion

The sun was setting over the rolling hills of the family estate, casting a warm orange glow over the gathering of relatives. The air was filled with the sound of laughter and chatter as the family reunited for the first time in years. Amidst the chaos, Emily Windsor stood out, her elegant blonde hair and poised demeanor a stark contrast to the more boisterous members of her family. She smiled warmly as she greeted her cousins, aunts, and uncles, exchanging hugs and kisses.

As the family gathered in the grand ballroom, Emily's mother, Catherine, stood at the front of the room, a look of pride on her face. "Welcome, everyone, to our family reunion! It's so wonderful to see you all here together." Catherine's eyes sparkled as she glanced around the room. "I hope you're all ready for a weekend of catching up, reminiscing, and making new memories. And, of course, celebrating the family heirloom that has been passed down through generations." Emily's eyes flicked to the display case in the corner of the room, where the family heirloom, a stunning diamond necklace, was nestled on a velvet cushion. She felt a surge of pride knowing that the necklace would one day be hers. As the evening wore on, the family enjoyed a lavish dinner, complete with fine wine and champagne. Emily found herself seated between her cousin, James, and her aunt, Lucy, who regaled her with stories of the family's history. As the night drew to a close, Catherine stood up once more, a mischievous glint in her eye. "And now, it's time for the traditional family game night! Who's ready to get competitive?" The room erupted into cheers and applause as the family made their way to the game room. Emily trailed behind, her eyes fixed on the display case. She felt a sudden pang of unease, but pushed it aside, telling herself she was just being paranoid. As she entered the game room, Emily was greeted by the sound of laughter and the clinking of glasses. She spotted James and Lucy already engrossed in a game of chess and made her way over to join them. But as she approached the table, Emily's heart skipped a beat. The display case was empty, the diamond necklace nowhere to be seen. A chill ran down Emily's spine as she realized that the family heirloom was missing. And with that, the night that was meant to be a celebration of family and tradition had turned into a mystery.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was finally brought back to the billionaire Vance estate after years in the grimy foster system, but the luxury Lincoln felt more like a funeral procession. My biological family didn't welcome me with open arms; they looked at me like a stain on a silk shirt. They thought I was a "defective" mute with cognitive delays, a spare part to be traded away. Within hours of my arrival, my father decided to sell me to Julian Thorne, a bitter, paralyzed heir, just to secure a corporate merger. My sister Tiffany treated me like trash, whispering for me to "go back to the gutter" before pouring red wine over my dress in front of Manhattan's elite. When a drunk cousin tried to lay hands on me at the engagement gala, my grandmother didn't protect me-she raised her silver-topped cane to strike my face for "embarrassing the family." They called me a sacrificial lamb, laughing as they signed the prenuptial agreement that stripped me of my freedom. They had no idea I was E-11, the underground hacker-artist the world was obsessed with, or that I had already breached their private servers. I found the hidden medical records-blood types A, A, and B-a biological impossibility that proved my "parents" were harboring a scandal that could ruin them. Why bring me back just to discard me again? And why was Julian Thorne, the man supposedly bound to a wheelchair, secretly running miles at dawn on his private estate? Standing in the middle of the ballroom, I didn't plead for mercy. I used a text-to-speech app to broadcast a cold, synthetic threat: "I have the records, Richard. Do you want me to explain genetics to the press, or should we leave quietly?" With the "paralyzed" billionaire as my unexpected accomplice, I walked out of the Vance house and into a much more dangerous game.
