My Stepbrother And I Chapter 1 My Stepbrother And I

I had learned early on that life didn't always give you what you wanted. My mother and I had been living paycheck to paycheck since my dad left, but we'd managed to scrape by. Until now, that is.

"Stella, honey, we need to talk," my mother said, her brow furrowed with worry.

I braced myself, knowing that our discussion wouldn't bring good news. Our fridge was almost empty, and the overdue bills were piling up on the kitchen table.

"I know things have been tough lately, but I think I've found a solution," Mom began, a hint of optimism in her voice.

"A solution to what? Our money problems?" I asked, trying to keep my skepticism in check.

She nodded. "Yes, Stella. I met a man, and he's rich. He's offered to take care of us, but there's a catch..."

"What's the catch, Mom?" I prompted, my heart racing.

She took a deep breath, her eyes clouded with apprehension. "The catch is that he wants to marry me, and he wants us to move in with him. He's a nice man, Stella, but I know this is a big change for you. I won't force you into anything, but we need this. We really need this, honey."

I was stunned.

My mind was racing as I processed this bombshell. Marrying a stranger for money? It seemed like the plot of a soap opera. And yet, our lives were on the brink of ruin.

"I know it's a lot to take in, Stella," Mom said, her voice gentle. "But this is our chance to start over, to have a better life. And I promise I won't let you down."

"You want to marry him, then?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly.

She nodded, her eyes filled with resolve. "I do, Stella."

The decision seemed like it had already been made, regardless of my thoughts. My mother was determined, and she was right-we needed the help. But this felt like jumping into the deep end of the pool without knowing how to swim.

"Okay, Mom," I said, my voice wavering. "I trust you. If you think this is the right thing to do, then I'm with you."

Mom smiled, relief evident on her face. "Thank you, Stella. This means the world to me."

Later that day I went to see my best friend and told her how my mother had scored a billionaire.

"Stels, this calls for celebration!" Jessica screamed with excitement. "Goodbye to poverty!"

"Goodbye to poverty!" I repeated after her, smiling hard.

"Let's go party!" she screamed again, and I nodded in agreement. My life was about to change for good. I was going to have a billionaire as a stepfather in a few weeks.

---

At the club, I and Jessica danced so hard while we got drunk. It was nice to have fun, and spend money without worrying.

"Stella, you need to get laid tonight." she said at the top of her voice so i could hear her against the loud music.

I blushed. It's been months since i had any action. After my break up with my boyfriend, I had just focused all my time on work and making ends meet.

"You need a real man Stels. No more more overgrown boys." she was referring to my ex-boyfriend Dennis.

I smiled at her. I have never done one night stands. But tonight the excitement I was feeling knowing that I was soon going to live the life of a billionaire was too intoxicating, and I was ready to do anything, no matter how crazy.

I looked around us, trying to see if any guy caught my fancy, but Jessica stopped me and quickly spun me in the direction of the most handsome man i have ever seen.

A slow smile spread over my face, "Jackpot!"

"Do you think you can get him in your bed tonight?" she asked.

My mouth parted agape. How is it possible for someone to be this stunning?

Blonde haired, blue-eyed, demi god was now staring back at me. He was an absolute heart-stopping, spine-tingling, gorgeous god of a man.

Drawing a quick breath of courage, I swallowed my nerves and walked towards him.

"That's my girl!" I hear Jessica hype me from behind. I was really doing this.

"What's up?" I said to him.

"Other than my heart rate right now?" he replied with an infectious smile.

I blushed. This was too good to be true.

"You're gorgeous," he continued. "My eyes glued on you instantly the moment I saw you."

How was he saying everything I wanted to say to him.

"I'm Chris." he introduced himself, his hand stretched out for a handshake.

"Stella..." I replied softly as I told his hand.

Chris's hand was warm and firm, and the spark I felt when our hands met made my breath hitch. He held my gaze with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine.

"Stella," he repeated, his voice smooth. "A beautiful name for a beautiful woman."

I couldn't help but smile. This man was not just charming; he was mesmerizing. "Thank you," I managed to say, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks.

"Can I get you a drink?" Chris asked, his eyes never leaving mine.

I nodded. "Sure."

He led me to the bar, his presence magnetic. I could feel the envious stares of other women as we passed. Jessica gave me a thumbs-up from the dance floor, her grin so wide it practically lit up the room.

"So, Stella," Chris said, leaning against the bar, "what brings you here tonight?"

I hesitated for a moment, then decided to be honest. "Celebrating some big changes in my life."

He arched a perfect brow, his curiosity piqued. "Big changes? Do tell."

I sipped the drink he handed me, feeling a bit bolder. "Maybe I'll tell you someday."

"Fair enough," he replied, raising his glass. "To new beginnings."

"To new beginnings," I echoed, clinking my glass with his.

We spent the next hour talking and laughing. Chris was not only stunning but also witty and surprisingly down-to-earth. For the first time in a long while, I felt seen-really seen.

As the night wore on, the chemistry between us became undeniable. Every brush of his hand, every glance, every smile-it all felt electric. My nerves were a distant memory, replaced by a heady mix of excitement and desire.

"Would you like to get some air?" he asked, his voice low and inviting.

I nodded, my heart racing. "Sure."

He led me outside to a quieter part of the club, the cool night air a welcome contrast to the heat between us. We stood close, the city lights casting a soft glow around us.

"Stella," he said, his voice almost a whisper. "I don't usually do this, but there's something about you... I don't want this night to end."

I felt my pulse quicken as his words hung in the air. This was my chance to let go, to do something spontaneous and wild.

"Then don't let it," I replied, surprising even myself with my boldness.

Chris's eyes darkened with desire, and before I could second-guess my decision, he closed the distance between us. His lips met mine in a kiss that was both tender and passionate, sending a jolt of electricity through me.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband's Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn't find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn't even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father's legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn's party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara's health and managing every detail of Caden's empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I'd drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause-if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I'd forgotten.
