After a painful divorce, Edina never thought she'd experience love again-until she crossed paths with Dr. Cole, who brings peace to her stormy life. Just as she begins to reclaim love again, Edina's past resurfaces when she discovers she is the long-lost daughter of a billionaire. Under the guidance of her distant Aunt, Mary, she took over the family's vast wealth, but her ex-husband Maxwell attempted to win her back. Will she give him a chance or will she use this as an opportunity to make his heart break just as he did to her?

Chapter 1 Crumbled world

EDINA'S POV

While waiting in the doctor's office, I held onto the chair tightly, feeling nervous as I looked down at the paper on my lap.

The bold letters confirmed it-I was pregnant. The realization echoed in my mind, stirring feelings I thought I had buried.

Maxwell and I had been married for three years, and I had longed for this moment. Finally, I thought, maybe this news would bridge the gap between us.

The gap between us that had suddenly appeared.

It hadn't been there the first time, he loved me and had always done but recently something was definitely not changing about him and I felt it work.

My heart raced with excitement, but a thread of fear lingered somewhere in me. Maxwell had always seemed so distant and detached lately.

I told myself that things would change this time. I thought he would notice me differently - he had to, didn't he? Had to love me more too.

I stole a glance out the window, observing the bustling street filled with people moving around. I envied them-the strangers who likely had lives that felt so much more fulfilling than mine. I sighed and tried to push that happiness back in me.

My grip on the paper tightened; this news felt like my opportunity to change everything.

As I got home, I noticed Maxwell's car in the driveway and rushed inside, excitement bubbling up in me.

I felt excited to share my news with him, hoping it would make him want to stay.

He was in our room, smiling and speaking excitedly on the phone

"Don't worry, I'll be there soon. I promise, I won't leave you, my love," he said gently and a sense of hopelessness came over me.

The excitement within me quickly turned cold, leaving an emptiness in its wake.

I could barely hear my breathing as he ended the call and turned to face me, his expression as hard as ever.

He hardly acknowledged my presence, his gaze washing over me as if I were merely part of the background, Like I wasn't there.

"Edina," he said in that usual flat tone, "I'm going to the hospital. Kourtney was just rushed to the hospital right now."

The mention of Kourtney struck me like a blow. I knew who she was, despite trying to ignore the late nights and excuses that had formed a growing distance between us.

I swallowed hard, struggling against the lump in my throat. "You...you're going to the hospital? Why?"

"Yes." He adjusted his tie, hardly meeting my gaze. "She needs me there. I can't leave her alone right now."

My throat felt dry. He had never said anything like that about me.

"But...Maxwell, I..." My voice faded, courage melting under his cold stare. How could I tell him of the news when his heart seemed so far from me already?

"What?" His voice was impatient, a hint of annoyance in the air as if my presence was a bother.

"Edina, I don't have time. Kourtney and the baby needs me. I heard she slipped and fell, so she might be having some complications. I have to get going."

The baby? His baby? The weight of those words felt suffocating. I was just a ghost in my own home, a shadow he hardly noticed, and now I carried a part of him in me.

But would he even care?

In a whisper, I managed to say, "I'm pregnant, Maxwell."

He froze for a moment, hand resting on the doorframe. I thought I saw a flicker of surprise in his eyes, maybe even shock, but it vanished quickly, replaced by the same detachment that tore our relationship.

"Oh," he said flatly, void of any warmth. "That's...unexpected."

Unexpected? That was all he could say?

I felt sick to my stomach as my excitement turned into a sad feeling. I was pregnant with his baby, but he didn't show any emotions.

I searched his face, hoping for any hint of care, but found nothing.

"Aren't you...happy?" I asked, my voice shaking.

He shrugged, reaching for his coat. "It doesn't change anything, Edina."

"I need to go to Kourtney right now," he said, pausing to look at me with a mix of annoyance and sympathy. "We can discuss this further later. Don't make it a big deal."

As he stepped out, I felt something inside me break. He didn't care. This child-our child-meant nothing to him.

I immediately put my hand on my tummy, as if trying to protect the little life inside from the tough reality of my situation.

He walked away without saying anything else, the door closing with a click, and I was left in complete silence.

Alone, I sank onto the couch, feeling my heart break into pieces.

How had I reached this point? How had I become so weak, so voiceless, clinging to someone who acted as if I was invisible? I tried to hold back tears, but they came anyway, each one showing another shattered hope. I had waited so long, wanting him to see me, to care. To love me. I felt like an idiot.

I had convinced myself that by loving him more, he would change. However, it was a false belief that I used to avoid the harsh reality: he never truly loved me, and I was just a temporary presence in his life.

I looked around the room at the bare walls and the furniture that had not been used, reminders of the life we had created together, or at least the life I had wished would be meaningful.

And now, they did not hold any meaning. Loving him was a waste of time.

As I placed my hand on my belly, I knew that this little life in me was my only hope, to see life beautifully and live. I felt like crying out loud but our nosy neighbors might hear and Maxwell will hate me more.

Even though I didn't know how to be strong for myself, I will learn for my child. I took a deep breath, wiped away my tears, and whispered.

"I'm here for you, I promise."

I was finally brought back to the billionaire Vance estate after years in the grimy foster system, but the luxury Lincoln felt more like a funeral procession. My biological family didn't welcome me with open arms; they looked at me like a stain on a silk shirt. They thought I was a "defective" mute with cognitive delays, a spare part to be traded away. Within hours of my arrival, my father decided to sell me to Julian Thorne, a bitter, paralyzed heir, just to secure a corporate merger. My sister Tiffany treated me like trash, whispering for me to "go back to the gutter" before pouring red wine over my dress in front of Manhattan's elite. When a drunk cousin tried to lay hands on me at the engagement gala, my grandmother didn't protect me-she raised her silver-topped cane to strike my face for "embarrassing the family." They called me a sacrificial lamb, laughing as they signed the prenuptial agreement that stripped me of my freedom. They had no idea I was E-11, the underground hacker-artist the world was obsessed with, or that I had already breached their private servers. I found the hidden medical records-blood types A, A, and B-a biological impossibility that proved my "parents" were harboring a scandal that could ruin them. Why bring me back just to discard me again? And why was Julian Thorne, the man supposedly bound to a wheelchair, secretly running miles at dawn on his private estate? Standing in the middle of the ballroom, I didn't plead for mercy. I used a text-to-speech app to broadcast a cold, synthetic threat: "I have the records, Richard. Do you want me to explain genetics to the press, or should we leave quietly?" With the "paralyzed" billionaire as my unexpected accomplice, I walked out of the Vance house and into a much more dangerous game.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.
