Chapter 1 Sam

"Look at me, baby, we are going to have to be very quiet." I whispered, I placed my hand on my lips, and he placed his hand on his lips, his eyes were filled with tears.

I held his hand softly as I tiptoed out of his room, I could hear Sam snoring, we headed into my room and I got a bag pack I had arranged, it has everything that I need.

"Mommy where are we going?" Ethan asked, his voice was low, he would rather not wake Sam either.

"Somewhere safe, you have to be very quiet for mommy, okay." I said, and he nodded, I crouched down to wipe his tears before we headed out of the room.

I'm never going to let anyone hurt him or me every again, I tiptoed toward the living room, when my eyes caught Sam lying on the couch, he was fast asleep and there were a couple of beers all around him, this is what happens every night, he ends up getting drunk and falling asleep in front of the TV.

I looked at him one last time before I headed out of the house, I helped Ethan with his shoes, we were right outside the door; I hadn't closed the door from behind when the loud sound of a phone ringing filled my ears.

My heart sank when I realized the call was coming from inside the house and Sam's eyes snapped open, his eyes met mine.

"Run." I yelled, Ethan started to run downstairs, Sam was heading toward us when I headed inside and my hand made contact with the vase not far from me.

"What do you think you are doing, wh*r*?." Sam yelled, my eyes were brimming with tears, my fingers were slipping off the vase when I held it tighter, I have never been this scared before.

"Stay away Sam." I yelled.

"Keep that vase before yourself; do you remember what happened the last time you tried to do something like this, it didn't end well for little Ethan." He smiled; he was moving closer to me.

This is not my first attempt at running, I have tried to flee a couple of times and I never got past the front door; he always knew when I was going to try and leave, and sometimes it felt like he could read my movements; he knew exactly what was going to happen but not this time, after last night I made up my mind, I need to get Ethan and I out of here.

I shook off the thought when I realized Sam was too close to me.

"Stay away." I whispered, my hand was shaking when I let out a breath, I noticed the mocking smile on his face, he felt like I can't do this, I have to prove him wrong. I gathered all of my strength and I hit him hard on his head, he stumbled upon his step and a breath escaped my lips.

Not only that, but I fetched my bag and I quickly headed downstairs, I found Ethan standing beside the car, his eyes were filled with tears when I rushed to him and he hugged me.

"We are getting out of here." I whispered to him, I quickly opened the door to the car, and we got in, I noticed Sam heading toward the entrance door when I looked back at him one last time before I drove away.

My hand gripped the steering wheels, my heart was practically beating out of my chest, more tears streamed down my cheek, fear clawed in my chest as I glanced at the rearview mirror.

I need to get out of here as soon as possible, I glanced at Ethan who was sitting at the back seat, he seemed to be fast asleep, I felt relieved, I am never going to let Sam anywhere near him.

As I drove away from the house, memories clouded my mind, I couldn't shake off how everything started.

I can remember when I met Sam, who was charming like every other guy, he treated me good, he even helped me get a degree at what I do today, he helped me get a job, and I thought I found the best thing that ever happened to me.

I never knew there was a monster hiding underneath him, it all started after we got married, I didn't think twice when I said yes to a man I have only been going out with for a couple of months, six months to be exact, we got married a month after he proposed, and I left my apartment, I left everything for him.

I started to realize the reason he got me this job is to keep an eye on me, two of his friends worked there, and they gave him tabs on my every activity, it got worse when he never wanted me to have any friends, not even female friends, he never wanted me to go on any work trip.

It got worse when I came home late for the first time, and he hit me, he apologized the next morning with flowers and cakes, I never thought it would become a habit, and soon he stopped apologizing, he stopped caring for the pain he caused me.

Every money I earned was sent to his bank account, I never had any money of my own except when I'm going to grocery shopping and I take his card, even after that I have to come home to explain why I spent so much on food.

I could have gone to cops after he hit me for the first time, but Sam worked as a police officer, no one would believe me over him, he was well known, and he had many friends, I knew I had to stay to protect my son, I can't be in jail knowing Ethan is alone with that monster.

I was pulled out of my thoughts when I speed through the highway, just when I thought we'd escaped, my phone buzzed, I hesitated a little before I pulled out my phone, there was a message on the screen; I tapped on it.

"I will find you Emma, and next time you won't get out." The message read, with Sam's rage echoing in my mind, I knew we had to disappear, I took a deep breath and I made the decision.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

Marrying My Runaway Groom's Powerful Father

Marrying My Runaway Groom's Powerful Father

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancé, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."
