Twisted emotions Chapter 1 Fractured reflections

Veronica Hart adjusted her pearl earring in the mirror, her fingers trembling as they brushed against her collarbone. The gala lights glimmered behind her, casting golden specks across the marble vanity of the Larkson estate powder room.

Tonight was supposed to be perfect-the night her husband, Fred, finally received his long-awaited promotion at Larkson Corporation. But her smile had cracked the moment she saw the message flash on his locked phone.

> "Last night was unforgettable. You still taste like sweet wine. – Jane"

Her breath had caught in her throat.Three years of marriage. Countless sacrifices. And still, she was the one who was left in the shadows of someone else's secrets.

---

The papers of divorce were filed three days later. This because Fred have been cheat her with different women. She has caught him a few times having affair with other women.

When Veronica filed for the divorce,Fred didn't fight it. He didn't apologize either-just signed where the lawyer told him to, packed a suitcase, and left behind only his cologne lingering in the closet. Veronica didn't shed another tear. Not for him.

The house felt emptier without his lies echoing through the halls.

Weeks passed in a blur of court appointments and awkward small talk from well-meaning friends. Veronica threw herself into work and pretended she was okay. But each night, the silence whispered louder.

Then came Friday.

The bar was dimly lit, with warm wood panels and a jazz trio crooning somewhere in the back. Veronica ordered a whiskey neat-something stronger than her usual sauvignon blanc-and tried not to think about how lonely she felt.

That's when she saw him.

Kelvin.

Tall, broad-shouldered, with a good smile that looked like it had seen trouble-and survived it. He bought her a drink. She let him. They talked. He made her laugh. She let herself forget.

Just for one night.

In the quiet haze of early morning, tangled in unfamiliar sheets, Veronica stared at the ceiling and exhaled. It wasn't love. It wasn't even comfort. But it was something. A moment reclaimed. A sliver of herself she thought Fred had taken for good.

Kelvin stirred beside her, murmured something about coffee. Veronica smiled faintly.

For the first time in weeks, her heart didn't feel like glass. It felt... alive.

---

The morning after drifted into a slow, golden Saturday. Veronica found herself in Kelvin's kitchen, wrapped in one of his oversized shirts, sipping coffee while he scrambled eggs like it was the most natural thing in the world. She didn't expect comfort. And yet-it was there, wrapped in the steam curling from her mug and the quiet hum of morning jazz on the speaker.

It wasn't until the third date that the truth unraveled.

They were sharing a bottle of red wine on his penthouse balcony, the skyline flickering behind them, when Kelvin mentioned his last name.

"Larkson."

The word hit her like a punch to the ribs.

She froze, glass halfway to her lips. "Larkson?" she echoed, trying to keep her voice even. "As in... Fred Larkson?"

Kelvin blinked, surprised. "Yeah. Fred's my cousin. You know him?"

Her stomach twisted. Of all the bars in all the cities...

She stood abruptly, panic clawing up her spine. She thought she'd escaped that name, that legacy. But it was right here, in front of her, wearing a crooked smile and looking at her like she hung the moon.

"I-I need some air," she stammered, stepping away from the balcony edge.

Kelvin followed her inside, concern etched across his features. "Hey, Veronica, talk to me. What's going on?"

She turned to face him, eyes wide and uncertain. "I was married to Fred."

Silence.

Something flickered behind Kelvin's eyes, then softened. "Damn. That explains... a lot."

Veronica waited for the shift-the judgment, the withdrawal, the distance. But it never came.

Instead, Kelvin stepped closer. "I'm not Fred," he said quietly. "Trust me, we're barely even alike. I've made mistakes-hell, too many-but I'm not going to hurt you."

And strangely, she believed him.

Over the next few weeks, Kelvin proved it. He didn't push, didn't demand. He listened. He showed up. He laughed with her when she needed light, held her when she felt hollow. Beneath the sleek charm and billionaire bravado, he was gentle, attentive-honest.

He saw something in her she hadn't seen in herself in years. Potential. Power. Passion. He encouraged her when she mentioned starting her own interior design business. "Do it," he said without hesitation. "I'll back you. Every step."

Veronica blinked, overwhelmed by the quiet sincerity in his tone. "You'd do that?"

He smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I'd do anything that helps you shine."

Her charming blue eyes held his gaze a little longer than before. And something shifted in Kelvin.

He didn't want to sleep around anymore. He didn't want late-night parties or empty flings. He wanted her-this version of her that was fierce, broken, rebuilding. He wanted to earn her trust, not just her touch.

Every time she smiled, he worked harder. Every time she doubted herself, he reminded her who she was. And slowly, the man who once lived off indulgence began choosing discipline. Choosing purpose. Choosing her.

---

Back in Veronica's home were she rented, silence greeted her. She didn't ask where Fred had gone after the gala. She didn't want to know. Instead, she poured herself a glass of wine, drew a hot bath, and let the tears she'd held back soak into the steam.

One hour later, knock at the door startled her.

"Miss Veronica?" The doorman's voice echoed through the intercom. "There's a visitor here. Says he's family."

Veronica frowned. "Family?"

She descended the stairs in her silk robe, her hair still damp. When she opened the door, standing before her was a man she have already began to fall in love with.

"Kelvin Larkson," shee said with smile that was mixed with a fear of being Fred's cousin. She allowed him in.

Over two glasses of scotch and a flickering fireplace, Kelvin revealed things that made her skin crawl.

"I came to warn you," he said, voice low. "Fred's not who you think he is. He's been hiding things. Not just from you. From everyone."

Veronica, half-skeptical, half-spiraling, pushed for more. Kelvin hesitated. Then, one sentence shattered the rest of her defenses.

> "I used to work with the woman he's cheating on you with. She's dangerous."

The room blurred. The heat between them intensified-not from anger alone. Kelvin's presence calmed her, made her feel seen. Not like Fred, whose affection was a transaction. One thing led to another. A single night. A reckless mistake. A moment of vulnerability she'd bury under shame.

---

Six weeks later, Veronica stared at the pregnancy test in her bathroom.Positive.She dropped the stick to the floor and stumbled back, heart hammering.Fred's child? Or Kelvin's?And just as the weight of that question began to consume her, her phone buzzed.

> Fred: "Important. Dinner at the Larksons' tonight. Be there. We're announcing my promotion."

Veronica didn't reply.

---

That evening, Veronica steps into the Larkson family mansion, wearing her most flawless mask yet. But as she enters the dining hall, she freezes. At the head of the table, sitting beside the Larkson patriarch, is Kelvin.

Their eyes lock. And in front of everyone, Fred says:> "Everyone, I'd like to introduce you to my cousin-Kelvin Larkson. The new CEO of Larkson Corporation."

Veronica's heart plummets. She grips the back of a chair to keep from collapsing.Kelvin's face doesn't betray a thing. But she knows what that expression means.

Everything just got infinitely more complicated.

The Seat at the Table

The chandelier above sparkled like a thousand unblinking eyes as Veronica struggled to catch her breath. Her legs were steady only because she'd mastered the art of appearing unshaken. But inside? Chaos.

Fred pulled out her chair like the perfect husband, whispering in her ear, "Try not to look so surprised. I wanted it to be a family moment."

Family. The word cut deeper than intended.

Kelvin rose with the confidence of a man who knew the power of silence. "Mrs. Hart," he greeted with a nod. "Pleasure to see you again."

Their eyes locked again, longer this time-too long. She blinked first.

Fred's mother, Cynthia Larkson, smiled warmly. "Veronica, I hope you'll help Kelvin adjust. He's going to be in close quarters with Fred for a while."

"I'm sure he will adjust just fine," Veronica said, forcing her voice not to tremble. "He's already good at... making himself at home."

Fred chuckled, oblivious. "Right? Told you he was sharp."

Kelvin didn't flinch. But a tiny twitch in his jaw gave him away.

---

Later That Night

The dinner was filled with wine, polite laughter, and veiled tension. Veronica excused herself early, claiming a migraine. As she waited for the driver outside, footsteps approached.

"I'm sorry," Kelvin said quietly. "I didn't know you were married to that Fred until after..."

She turned to him, ice in her voice. "you are lieing, after you slept with me?"

He nodded once. No excuses.

"But I'm not sorry for it," he added. "Not when I know what he's been doing behind your back. Or what she is planning."

Veronica's breath caught. "She?"

Kelvin hesitated. "Not here. Just... be careful who you trust."

She opened the car door but stopped short. "What exactly did you come here for, Kelvin? To take over a company-or to finish ruining my life?"

He didn't answer.

She left.

---

Later that night, Fred met with a woman in the shadows of his office-her identity hidden beneath a silk scarf.

"Everything's going according to plan," Fred said, swirling whiskey. "Veronica's falling apart. Keep her close. Feed her doubts,I want her to came back to me"

The woman stepped into the light: Daniella.

"She's already asking questions about Kelvin," Daniella said, smirking. "I'll make sure she never trusts him again."

---

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

For seven years, I drank the bitter tonic my fiancé, Alpha Adrian, gave me, believing it would cure my "wolfless" defect. I was wrong. It was poison. He wasn't trying to heal me; he was keeping me weak so he could replace me with my foster sister, Ariel. When the fire consumed the Alpha's Wing, I was trapped under a burning beam, my legs crushed. Adrian kicked down the door. I reached out to him, screaming for help. But he didn't look at me. He looked at Ariel, who was lying on the floor in a silk nightgown. He scooped her up, cradling her like she was the only thing that mattered. I begged him not to leave me. Instead of helping, he used his Alpha Command on me, his voice booming with supernatural weight. "Stay put! I'll be back for you!" It was a lie. He used his power to freeze me in the inferno and left me to burn alive. I survived, only to watch him publicly reject me for her the next day, with my own father's blessing. They called me a "genetic dead end." They thought I would crawl away and die in shame. I didn't. I limped up the mountain to the Neutral Lands to find the one man everyone fears-the exiled Alpha, Garth Morgan. "I have the Gamma Bloodline Scroll," I told the massive figure emerging from the shadows. "I don't want your gratitude," Garth growled, his eyes like storm clouds. "I'm not here for gratitude," I replied, staring him down. "I'm here to make a deal with the devil."

My five-year-old daughter was turning blue in my arms, her body rigid with a 104-degree fever. I called my billionaire husband, Clifton, dozens of times as I rushed to the hospital, but he declined every single call. While I was screaming at doctors and fighting to save our child’s life, a news alert flashed on my phone. Clifton was at the Met Gala, looking devastatingly handsome as he intimately draped his tuxedo jacket over the shoulders of his mistress, Eleanora. The nightmare didn't end at the hospital. Clifton used a secret clause in our prenup to snatch Lily from her bed and move her to a private facility without my consent. When I finally found her, my own daughter shrank away from me in terror. "Go away, bad Mommy!" she sobbed, while the mistress fed her oatmeal and whispered that I was the one who made the doctors hurt her. Clifton stood by and watched, telling me I was too "hysterical" to be a mother. But then I discovered the real reason they were hiding her. My husband was illegally using my late mother’s rare bone marrow samples to treat Eleanora’s secret blood disorder. Now that those samples are failing, he is taking Lily to a secluded castle in Germany to harvest our daughter’s marrow for his mistress. I sat in the dark, watching them play happy family with the child they plan to sacrifice. I realized then that my marriage wasn't just a lie—it was a biological harvest. They think I’m just a broken trophy wife who doesn't understand the science they are using to destroy me. They have no idea that I am "Ghost," the anonymous medical genius behind the very research they are trying to steal. As we board the private jet to Germany, I’ve stopped crying and started calculating. If they want to play with life and death, I’ll show them exactly what happens when a mother stops being a victim and starts being a predator.
