Chapter 1

Carmilla

.

.

.

"Run, Carmilla" Her voice desperate, filled with fear.

I looked at my mom ,still holding her hands. My heart was pounding but I couldn't see her face clearly. Everywhere was red-she was covered in blood.I was still reluctant to let go of her hands and then she smiled at me with tears in her eyes. She removed the silver necklace she was wearing and gave it to me.

"Always keep this necklace with you, don't lose it."She said.

My feet moved before I could think. The ground beneath me was wet and sticky. The smell of smoke burnt my nose ,mixing with something else- something metallic.

Blood

I ran.

I had no destination in mind but all I knew was that I had to keep on moving. Branches scratched against my skin while I pushed through the trees as I grasped for air .My mother's voice echoed behind me but it was distant now ,swallowed by forest noises.

"Don't stop- keep running!"

I wanted to scream but I couldn't. My throat felt light ,like something was holding it back.

But then I saw them.

Figures lurking in the darkness, a deep growl filled the air.My legs froze.

The shadow moved closer.I could hear my heartbeat thrashing in my ear as I tried to move backwards but I couldn't.

A sharp pain exploded in my chest. I gasped for air as I fell down to my knees. The trees around me blurred ,the voices fading.

And then, everything went blank.

My eyes snapped open , my chest rising and falling due to rapid breaths. My skin damp from sweat, trembling hands clutching over my thin blanket.

That dream again.

The memory was still fresh even after years had passed on. I wasn't a helpless child anymore but some wounds just never healed.

I turned to my side ,staring at my ceiling.

After that night, I was taken in by my father's sister ,Aunt Freya.I initially believed she took me in as an act of kindness. But Freya didn't do kindness- She did control.

I was given a room and it was nothing more than a glorified prison.I wasn't allowed to leave the estate or ask questions related to my mother's death. And whenever I did her answer was the same. "You are lucky I took you in. Don't forget that."

But deep down I knew I wasn't kept hidden out of love.

I was either protected or being silenced.

From what ? I still didn't know.

I exhaled shakily , running my hands through my tangled hair as I stood up to style my hair at the dressing table.

I sat down on the chair and picked up my grey hairbrush as I looked into the mirror to brush my hair. I stared at myself and my eyes went to the necklace my mother had given me years ago.I could still remember those words she said to me that day. My smile wavered as I touched her necklace.

The sound of the door creaking open snapped me out of my thoughts. I stiffened, my hands dropping to my lap.

Footsteps. Soft, measured.

Aunt Freya.

She stepped inside, her sharp amber eyes sweeping over me. "You're awake."

I didn't answer. I just watched her.I wondered what she wanted to tell me this time.I noticed the tray she was holding and each time she brought me food herself , it was either because she wanted to say something important or she needed my help with an important task.

She sighed and walked further in, with the small tray in her hands. A plate of food. "Eat."

I stared at it. My stomach churned. I wasn't hungry.

She sat down across from me, placing the tray between us. "You're getting married, Carmilla."

I moved back slightly with my eyes widening.I pretended not to hear what she said. It could have been some kind of morning joke.

"What?"I said, cocking my head.

"You heard me."

I shook my head, my breath catching. "No. No, I-"

"It's already decided," she said, cutting me off. "You'll marry Alpha Evans. It's for the good of our pack."

Our pack? I almost laughed. This wasn't my pack. This wasn't even my home. How did that have anything to do with me.

I clenched my fists. "I don't want to get married."

She gave me a cold look. "That doesn't matter."

"Wait why am I getting married to him?"

"Your father owed Evan's father a debt, Carmilla."

"Debt?" I swallowed hard.

"He promised us protection bad without it, our pack is vulnerable. And now he's here to take it."

"But why me?" I looked up at her.

"He believes you possess a very powerful weapon."

"Powerful weapon?" I said with a confused expression.

"Your father had a very powerful tool that

was capable of dominating everywhere, but he didn't believe in using magic to fight. So he sealed it up and hid it. Since your parents were powerful, they believe you are too. They think you are capable of shifting too meanwhile you can't and that's one thing you should never let them find out."

My throat tightened. I wanted to scream, to fight, to tell her I would rather die than be given away like an object. But I knew it wouldn't change anything.

Freya wasn't the type to care, but she carefully gave me the details of everything that had happen. At least I knew what I was getting into.

She reached into her pocket and brought out a pearl bracelet ."This is a gift from me.It would look so pretty on your pretty pale skin."

I stared at her in utmost disgust as she dropped the bracelet on the counter close to my bedside.

The wedding is in three days. Behave, and I might let you out of this estate until then."

She repeatedly ignored the glares I gave to her.

"Eat," she repeated before standing up. "You'll need your strength."

With that, she turned and left, the door closing behind her with a heavy thud.

I sat there, staring at the untouched food.

I was trapped.

And in three days, I would be married to a man I didn't even know.

"Your wedding is in three days. Behave, and I might let you out of this estate until then".Her words echoed in my mind, and I felt a knot forming in my abdomen. It also meant I could take this as an opportunity to escape.

I just had to pretend for at least two days straight, so I have to act as though I'm alright with it? My aunt wasn't stupid enough to fall for such an act though... Was this the reason she proposed setting me free in the first place?

It wouldn't hurt to give it a try, would it? There's also a possibility of her knowing if I tried something as stupid as running, I might end up becoming a rouge.

With my eyes still fixed on the food tray, these thoughts swirled through my mind, and I started to feel nauseous. I had to come up with a plan within three days. "I have to do something, anything." My eyes blurred with tears, and my heartbeat rate increased tenfold.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.
