The moment Melanie grasped she was merely a clever piece sliding across Greyson's grand chessboard, she tore herself free without blinking. Not a day later, Greyson watched a swarm of suitors orbit her like moths around a flame; spite boiled over, and he cursed the urge to chain her wrist to his own. Bent on breaking his hold, Melanie threw everything she had at her escape, her heart aching for freedom. Greyson summoned a last reserve of strength to free her, yet five tortured minutes later he collapsed, hands shaking, begging, "If you're going, can you take me with you?"

"Are you afraid?" Greyson Blake's words, low and enticing, seemed to linger just beside Melanie Dale's cheek.

A shiver ran through her body, so strong that it left her breathless. "Please stop!"

He gave a quiet laugh, the kind that chilled her to the bone, every note dripping with mockery.

"Weren't you the one who promised you'd do whatever it took?"

Melanie's eyes stung, turning glassy with anger and regret. She had anticipated this and believed that she could stand it. But when it really happened, she found that the courage slipped through her fingers.

"The Blake family's gathering will begin soon. Can we just wait until it ends..."

Something unfamiliar pressed in on her, setting every nerve on edge.

Rising up on her toes, she strained to pull away, terror clawing at her.

A tear slipped down, catching on her lashes, and she looked for all the world like a frightened doe frozen in place.

"You want me to step in now, only to settle the score later. Do you think I'm a man who bends that easily?"

In all of Andence, everyone knew the ruthless and cold-blooded nature of Greyson. He was the former family head's fourth son and also the current family head.

A heavy weight dropped in her chest, the last bit of hope squeezed out.

With him, there would be no chance at trickery. He never moved without certainty.

Still, Melanie knew that today was her only chance. She couldn't afford to let it slip by.

"If that's the case, make it quick."

Pressure from his hand clamped down on her shoulder, the heat of his breath close enough to unsettle her.

They spent the next hour wrapped up in each other, hearts racing and breaths tangled.

Afterward, her fingers quivered as she slipped back into her dress, stealing a glance at the man who watched her every move as she crept over to collect her underwear from the floor.

"Mr. Blake, about what you agreed to do for me..."

Lighting a cigarette, Greyson leaned back without a care in the world, a single button left undone on his shirt, his posture both languid and commanding.

He looked at what she held and spoke in a flat, indifferent tone. "Put it on."

Shame washed over Melanie, burning hotter than before.

She sank her teeth into her lower lip, and, with his unwavering attention upon her, she stepped into the garment, tugged up her dress, and tightened the knot at her waist.

"Is that okay?"

"You can leave."

Shadows from the cigarette's glow hid whatever expression lingered on his face.

With questions left unspoken, Melanie slipped away in silence.

His word carried the weight of a signed agreement - once given, never broken.

Stepping out with quiet respect, she never glimpsed the way his fist tightened or how his stare darkened as she left.

A strange relief swept over him, pain that had haunted him for years disappearing for a fleeting moment.

Squinting, Greyson reached for his phone and instructed, "Find out everything you can about her. For the time being, don't do anything to her."

...

Outside, Melanie slipped from the mansion undetected, taking a moment to steady her breathing.

Coming toward her, Lorna Dale, her mother, moved carefully, one hand resting on her expectant belly. "Melanie, what took you so long? Did you talk to Mr. Blake? Has he agreed to lend a hand?"

With John Blake retired from the family's affairs, Greyson had taken his place at the helm.

If Greyson chose to intervene, every problem standing in their way could be swept aside.

Without a second thought, Melanie rushed over to offer support. "Take it easy, Mom. No need to fret. He's said yes."

Lorna gave a relieved nod, though her gaze soon landed on the faint red imprints marring Melanie's neck.

"Melanie, how did you convince him? Was there something you..."

Suspicion flickered in her mother's eyes, and Melanie's nerves jumped.

A swift tug at her collar hid the evidence her mother searched for.

"Why are you letting your imagination run wild again, Mom? Colby and I have been together for three years. He gave his word he'd marry me once he got back. There's no way I'd betray him."

Only then did Lorna's anxious shoulders drop.

With a calm voice, Melanie continued, "I explained to Greyson that your baby's father is his brother, Leland. That child is the last bit of Leland's blood in this world. Even if the Blakes want nothing to do with us, surely they'll accept the baby. After all, they have more money than they could ever spend - one more child won't make a difference."

For years, Lorna had loved Leland Blake, John's second son, and now she carried his child.

Yet, the Blake family had always kept their distance.

Not long ago, Leland died suddenly, and the truth of his massive debts came to light. With his passing, creditors hounded Lorna and Melanie for payment.

Desperation left Melanie with only one option: appeal to the Blakes for help.

She knew that under their roof, those men chasing the debt would at least think twice before making a move.

Right then, the butler appeared, beckoning for them to come inside.

True to his promise, Greyson had followed through.

Without hesitation, both Lorna and Melanie hurried after the man.

As soon as they entered the grand entryway, Lorna's eyes fell on John, who sat in a stately armchair, prompting her to approach with eager steps and offer a respectful greeting.

John cut her off before she could say another word, a cold scoff escaping him. "It's almost dinner time. Why invite guests in at this moment?"

His meaning could not have been plainer.

The Blake family was going to have dinner, and Melanie and Lorna, as outsiders, weren't welcome here.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband's Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn't find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn't even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father's legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn's party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara's health and managing every detail of Caden's empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I'd drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause-if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I'd forgotten.

SHANA GRAY

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
