For eight years, my world had orbited a single star: Liam. He was my guardian, the man my father, with his dying breath, had entrusted with my future. He was my hero. And he had made me a promise-a promise that on my twenty-second birthday, he would finally see me, not as a child, but as a woman. Today, I came to collect. But in the sticky, sweet air of the amusement park, behind a pastel-pink cotton candy stand, I found him. And I overheard the truth. This wasn't a meeting; it was a meticulously staged play of cruelty. He had rented a baby. He had asked Sienna, the woman he secretly loved, to pose as his girlfriend. His masterpiece of a plan? To construct a picture-perfect family scene designed to shatter what he called my "childish fantasy." To teach me a lesson about boundaries. His friends were laughing, calling it a brilliant, two-birds-one-stone gambit. He was weaponizing my love, using my devotion as a stage prop to woo another woman. My eight years of waiting-learning to cook his favorite meals, sacrificing a scholarship to a better life just to be near him-wasn't a testament to love. It was a burden. An annoyance to be managed with a heartless, elaborate prank. Later that night, my phone chimed. A picture of a tiny, perfect baby's foot, followed by a digital wedding invitation. The text below it was brutally simple: "I have a girlfriend now. Stop loving me." I stared at the screen, my world silent except for the frantic hammering in my chest. Then, with a calmness that frightened even me, I typed back two words. "Okay." Then I booked the first flight out of the country and threw away every last memory of him.

Chapter 1 1

I had a crush on my guardian, Liam Lu. That's the simplest way to put it.

He was my father's best friend, the man entrusted to look after my brother and me after Dad died. He was also twelve years my senior, which made my love a secret I guarded with my life.

Until my eighteenth birthday.

Under the dizzying lights of the Coney Island Wonder Wheel, a little drunk and a lot reckless, I kissed him. It was clumsy and quick, and I was ready to bolt, my heart hammering against my ribs.

But his eyes snapped open. He looked at me, a slow, unconcerned smile playing on his lips. "Want a lesson in kissing, little bird? Too bad. I'm not interested in little girls."

Shame burned my cheeks, but I stood my ground. "I'll grow up. I can wait."

He seemed to consider this for a second, then chuckled. "Alright. When you turn twenty-two, if you still feel this way... I'll think about it."

That promise became my entire world. For four years, my life was a countdown to this day.

And today, on my twenty-second birthday, I was here to collect.

I couldn't find him at our meeting spot, so I went searching, clutching a giant teddy bear I'd won for him. I finally spotted him near the carousel, laughing with his friends. I crept closer, hiding myself behind a cotton candy stand.

That's when I heard a baby cry.

I peeked around the edge. Liam was holding a fussy infant, bouncing him awkwardly. His friends looked annoyed.

"Damn, Liam, you're really going all out," one of them said. "You actually rented a baby just to teach your little ward a lesson?"

My mind went blank.

"What other choice do I have?" Liam's familiar, lazy drawl cut through the cheerful music. "She's twenty-two today. Thinks she's a big girl now, ready to cash in on some stupid promise. It's time she learned the difference between a guardian and a lover."

"You dislike her that much? Clara's a good kid. Pretty, sweet, totally devoted to you..."

"It's not about like or dislike." Liam's voice dropped, turning serious. "You all know who I really have feelings for."

A moment of silence, then a chorus of knowing laughter.

"Sienna! Of course... Man, you think too much. You should have just asked her out."

"I was afraid I'd lose her as a friend," Liam admitted, a hint of a smile in his voice. "Clara's little drama... it's the perfect opportunity. I told Sienna my ward has a misguided crush. I asked her to play the part of my serious girlfriend-the future 'auntie.' We show up with this baby, stage a whole family scene. It'll shatter Clara's fantasy and give Sienna and me a chance to get closer. After this charade, I'll confess to her for real."

The men praised his two-birds-one-stone plan, slapping him on the back.

They didn't notice me.

The giant teddy bear slipped from my arms, hitting the pavement with a soft thud.

I turned and ran, tears blurring the park lights into painful streaks of color.

My love began when I was fourteen. He'd saved me from a few thugs in an alley. He tossed me his jacket and a chocolate bar and teased me for being a crybaby. That day, I fell in love.

I learned to cook for him. I gave up a scholarship to Paris for him. I waited four years for his promise.

And now I knew the truth. To him, my love was nothing but a burden. An inconvenience to be managed with a heartless prank.

For seventeen years, I was the pride of the Carlisle family, the perfect daughter destined to inherit an empire. But that life ended the moment a DNA report slid across my father’s mahogany desk. The paper proved I was a stranger. Vanessa, the girl sobbing in the corner, was the real biological daughter they had been searching for. "You need to leave. Tonight. Before the press gets wind of this. Before the stock prices dip." My father’s voice was as cold as flint. My mother wouldn't even look at me, staring out the window at the gardens as if I were already a ghost. Just like that, I was erased. I left behind the Birkin bags and the diamonds, throwing my Centurion Card into a crystal bowl with a clatter that echoed like a gunshot. I walked out into the cold night and climbed into a rusted Ford Taurus driven by a man I had never met—my biological father. I went from a mansion to a fourth-floor walk-up in Queens that smelled of laundry detergent and struggle. My new siblings looked at me with a mix of fear and disgust, waiting for the "fallen princess" to break. They expected me to beg for my old life back, to crumble without the luxury I’d known since birth. But they didn't know the truth. I had spent years training in a shark tank, honing survival skills they couldn't imagine. While Richard Carlisle froze my trust funds to starve me out, my net worth was climbing by millions on an encrypted trading app. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves. They didn't realize they were just letting me off my leash. As the Carlisles prepared to debut Vanessa at the Manhattan Arts Gala, I was already making my move. "Get dressed. We're going to a party."
