Elena Ward spent four years as the fated mate nobody wanted. When Alpha Kane Voss rejects her in front of the entire pack, she expects to disappear quietly into exile, the way rejected mates always do. She doesn't know she's the last living heir of the Ashwood bloodline - wolves the old packs were taught to fear before they were taught to forget. She doesn't know Kane rejected her to keep her alive, not to throw her away. And she doesn't know that in three years, when she walks back through the Voss territory border, it won't be as the girl anyone remembers. This is a story about a woman who stops waiting to be chosen - and a man who has to earn a second chance he never thought he'd get.

The Alpha Who Threw Her Away Chapter 1 What He Said in Front of Everyone

Elena counted heads out of habit while she waited. Three hundred, give or take, packed into the clearing under a sky the color of old bruises. She'd done this at every pack gathering since she was nine - counted exits, counted faces, made a small private inventory of the room before anything happened in it. It gave her something to do with her hands when there was nothing else to hold.

Kane stood ten feet away in his ceremonial half-shift, claws retracted, jaw working at something rigid he was clearly trying not to let show. On anyone else, she'd have called it nerves.

"I, Alpha Kane Voss," he said, "reject Elena Ward as my fated mate."

Nobody gasped. That was the part she'd remember longest - not the words, but the silence that came after them, ordinary and unsurprised, like weather everyone had already checked the forecast for.

The bond didn't snap. It just switched off, the way a room goes dark when the last light in the house is turned out somewhere you can't see. Her knees understood it before her mind caught up - a looseness under her, a gap where four years of quiet, constant awareness of him used to sit. She stayed upright by making a decision about it. *Later,* she told herself. *You'll feel this later.*

"Get up," said Renner, the Beta, not looking at her. "You're blocking the aisle."

She hadn't realized she was still kneeling. She stood. Her legs held, which surprised her more than the rejection had.

Kane wasn't looking at her. He was looking somewhere past her shoulder, toward the tree line, and that told her more than the sentence he'd just recited. A man usually looked at the person he meant something to.

"The Elders grant Elena Ward safe passage beyond the border," Renner went on, flipping to the next item like this was a zoning meeting and not the end of something. "Effective tonight."

Someone near the front checked their phone.

Elena packed in eleven minutes. She knew the exact number because she watched the clock the whole time, needing something to measure that wasn't the thing happening in her chest. Four years of being introduced at every function that mattered as *the Alpha's mate*, and it ended with a man reading a line he'd clearly rehearsed, to a crowd already thinking about traffic before the rain came in.

Mira was waiting at the door when she came out, duffel bag hitched under one arm, before Elena had even reached for it herself.

"He's an idiot," Mira said. No preamble. She never bothered with one.

"He's the Alpha," Elena said. "Apparently there's a difference."

"Elena."

"I need you not to hug me right now," Elena said, "because I'll lose it, and I've decided I'm not doing that here."

Mira's jaw tightened, but she didn't argue. She fell into step beside Elena instead, silent, and walked her all the way to the border herself - past the checkpoint guards who suddenly found the ground very interesting, past the last of the porch lights, until the pack was nothing behind them but a smear of orange low in the trees.

"Where will you go?" Mira asked, when the silence had gone on long enough that it needed breaking.

"I don't know yet."

"That's not like you. You always know."

"I used to always know things that mattered here." Elena adjusted the duffel on her shoulder. "Turns out none of it did."

At the very edge of the territory line, half-shifted, fur gone grey at the muzzle the way it does on wolves old enough to remember things nobody bothers writing down anymore, stood a man Elena had seen exactly twice in her life. An unranked elder. Always alone, always at the tree line, never close enough to speak to. He didn't approach her now either. He simply watched her the way you'd watch someone you'd been expecting, which made no sense at all, because nobody in this pack had ever been expecting her for anything.

He inclined his head. Not a farewell. Something closer to a greeting.

Elena didn't have anything left over to be unsettled by it. She filed it away the way she filed everything that didn't fit - behind the eleven minutes, behind Renner's zoning-meeting voice, behind Mira's silence at the border - and kept walking until the road took a bend and there was nothing behind her worth turning around for.

---

Kane watched the same stretch of road from his window long after her scent had thinned past the point his wolf could still track it. He hadn't moved from that spot since the ceremony ended. He didn't plan to.

"You could've told her," Renner said from the doorway. Not quite an accusation. Not far from one either.

"Told her what." Kane didn't turn around. "That the Calder pack put a bounty on the first wolf I claimed publicly, the same week they found out what runs in her blood? That the safest place for her right now is anywhere that isn't standing next to me?"

"You could've told her *something*. Instead of humiliating her in front of everyone she's ever known."

Kane didn't answer that, because there wasn't an answer that made it better, and he'd stopped hunting for one three days ago - the night Thorne showed up at his door with a warning Kane still hadn't fully absorbed, and a price tag on it that Kane had paid without asking Elena if she'd have agreed to the trade.

"Three years," Thorne had told him. "Maybe less, if she starts asking the right questions. Longer if you're lucky. Either way, Alpha - when she comes back, she won't be the girl you sent away tonight."

Kane hadn't felt lucky once since. He felt like a man who'd set fire to the one good thing he'd built and was calling it mercy because the alternative had a body count attached to it.

Renner lingered in the doorway another moment, waiting for something that didn't come, then left him to the window and the empty road.

Somewhere past the border by then, walking without a destination for the first time in her life, Elena had already stopped thinking about him.

She told herself that three more times before she came anywhere close to believing it.
