I spent a year acting like the perfect, submissive girlfriend to Dale, fetching his beers and enduring his cheating. I even saved up for three months to buy him a custom leather jacket for the day he became a fully patched member of the Redeemer Knights. But at his patching-in party, he publicly humiliated me. He draped the jacket I bought over another girl, Bianca, and raised his glass to the crowd. "To Bianca! My beautiful new Old Lady!" The entire clubhouse erupted in cheers, mocking my pathetic loyalty. Bianca sauntered over, poured a glass of ice-cold whiskey over my head, and called me a drowned rat. When I dared to react, Dale tried to punch me in the face. Later, his new girl's family even sent club enforcers to hunt me down, ordering them to break both of my legs and destroy my face so I would suffer forever. They all thought I was just a weak, helpless orphan they could easily crush and discard. They thought I would just cry, beg, and accept my miserable fate. But they didn't know that the timid Caroline Shaffer was just a carefully crafted cover. The cold whiskey snapped my suppressed memories awake. I am Echo, a top-tier underground field surgeon and lethal operative. Wiping the liquor from my face, the weak Caroline evaporated. I shattered a glass against the bar and pressed the jagged edge to Bianca's throat. The game was just beginning.
Caroline Shaffer POV:
The air inside the Redeemer Knights' clubhouse was thick enough to choke on, reeking of stale draft beer, burning motor oil, and cheap vanilla perfume. Heavy metal thrummed through the floorboards, a relentless bassline that rattled the teeth in my skull. Around the pool tables and along the scarred mahogany bar, leather cuts bristled with silver chains, iron studs, and the violent energy of men who lived outside the law.
For two years, this compound had been my entire world. Tonight, it felt like an iron cage about to be dropped into an incinerator.
At the center of the bar stood Dale Edwards. Tonight was his coronation. After months of grunt work and dirty errands, the three-piece patch had finally been stitched onto his back.
The embroidered reaper, the crossed trench knives, and the bottom rocker blaring NORTH CAROLINA declared him a full-patched brother of the outlaw underworld.
He leaned against the beer taps, drunk on cheap bourbon and swollen with unearned arrogance.
Plastered to his side was Bianca Shaw. She was draped in a black calfskin motorcycle jacket-my jacket.
The one I had spent three grueling months saving for, skipping meals and working double shifts scraping grease off combine engines at the local farms. I had bought it for Dale's patch-in night. Now, Bianca stroked the lapels with manicured nails, purring into the crook of his neck.
Dale slammed an empty pitcher onto the bar counter. The iron thud cut through the music, bringing the room to an expectant hush.
"Listen up, brothers!" Dale roared, his chest puffed out like a fighting rooster. He wrapped an arm around Bianca's waist, hauling her against his hip. "To Bianca! My gorgeous new Old Lady!"
The clubhouse erupted. Feral whistles, boots stomping the floor, and glasses clinking together in a chorus of rowdy approval.
Bianca leaned back into his embrace, her eyes roaming over the room like a cat that had just cornered the house mouse.
Finally, her gaze sliced through the smoky haze and locked directly onto me, standing isolated in the shadowy corner near the service door. Her smile was pure venom.
Nearby, a couple of club Sweetbutts leaned over the jukebox, whispering behind their acrylic nails.
"Look at Caroline. Still clinging to the shadows like a kicked mutt."
"Pathetic. Did she honestly think washing his grease rags and stitching his split knuckles was gonna get her a patch?"
The words prickled like needles against my neck, but they didn't draw blood. Two years. Two years of playing the docile, quiet orphan girl. Two years of tending to Dale's hangovers, nursing his road rash, and turning a blind eye while he disappeared for days on end with other women. I had convinced myself that keeping my head down was the only way to survive.
Bianca picked up a fresh tumbler of bourbon from the bar and sauntered over. Her hips swayed with deliberate, theatrical exaggeration. The music seemed to recede, every eye tracking her as she closed the distance.
"Caroline, honey," she cooed, tilting her head with mock sympathy. "I'm honestly so sorry it had to end like this. But Dale's a real patched man now. A brother needs a high-class woman on his arm, not a broken charity case."
I didn't answer. I kept my chin level, holding her gaze with a silence so absolute that her smirk flickered. The lack of tears seemed to unnerve her, sparking an ugly irritation behind her blue eyes.
With deliberate clumsiness, she flicked her wrist.
The amber liquor splashed squarely across my chest, soaking through my faded cotton shirt and chilling my skin. The sharp, cloying stench of alcohol hit my nostrils.
"Oh, my God!" Bianca shrieked with theatrical delight, clapping a hand over her mouth. "I am so clumsy! Look at you... soaking wet. Just like a drowned little sewer rat."
Drowned rat.
The phrase echoed in the hollow chambers of my skull. And then, somewhere behind my temples, a tight, rusty latch gave way.
The fog that had smothered my mind for twenty-four months evaporated in a single, icy second. The meek girl who flinched at raised voices dissolved into ash.
In her place, a cold, surgical clarity took root. I saw Dale for what he was: a petty thief wearing heavy leather. I saw Bianca for what she was: a scavenger feasting on scraps.
I straightened my posture, rolling my shoulders back. The sadness washed out of my eyes, leaving them as hard and barren as winter ice.
"Do you remember Highway 9, Dale?"
My voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a strange, razor-sharp resonance that cut through the lingering chatter. The laughter in the room began to die down.
I stepped past Bianca, ignoring her completely, and looked Dale dead in the eye.
"Two years ago," I said, each syllable deliberate and deadly calm. "You were lying in a drainage ditch with three cracked ribs and a punctured lung, left behind by the very crew you were trying to impress. I dragged you into the cab of my truck. I set your bones. I covered for you while you shook with fear in my bed."
Dale's face flushed a deep, mottled red. At the rear poker table, several older patched members paused, their cards hovering in mid-air.
In an outlaw club that lived and died by loyalty, a prospect who abandoned the woman who saved his life was lower than dirt.
"You're a fraud, Dale," I stated quietly. "You didn't earn that reaper on your back. You just wore me down until I stopped demanding the truth."
"Shut your damn mouth!" Dale bellowed, slamming his fist onto the mahogany. "Get this crazy bitch out of here before I put hands on her!"
I didn't wait for him to move. I spun around on my combat boots and walked toward the exit. No screaming. No broken bottles. Just a clean, absolute severance.
The heavy steel door swung open, and the freezing midnight wind slammed into my face. Behind me, the roar of angry voices signaled that Dale's pride was wounded-and in this world, wounded pride demanded blood.
They thought they were chasing a wounded stray. They had no idea what kind of monster they had just shaken awake.
