Eliana has spent her entire life believing so deeply in her self worth. Until the night a stranger looks at her and said, "You were never supposed to survive." One sentence is enough to turn her ordinary life upside down and lower her self esteem. A forgotten photograph. A name she has never heard before. A family that insists they have never seen her. And a powerful man named Adrian, who seems to know far more about Eliana than he should. When Eliana begins searching for answers, she discovers that her past has been deliberately erased. But the deeper she digs, the more dangerous and heartbreaking the truth becomes. Why does a billionaire family fear her existence? Why does Adrian keep appearing whenever she gets close to the truth? And why does someone desperately want Eliana to disappear again? She thought she was searching for her past. She doesn't know that her past has been searching for her too. Because Eliana isn't the nobody everyone thinks she is. And when the truth finally comes out, an entire empire may fall.
The rain started before sunrise.
By six in the morning, the small city streets were already covered with puddles, and the sound of rain tapping against windows filled the quiet neighborhood.
Eliana pulled her blanket closer to her body and stared at the ceiling.
She had been awake for almost an hour.
Sleep had become difficult lately.
Not because she was worried about anything in particular.
At least, that was what she kept telling herself.
She turned to look at the small alarm clock beside her bed.
6:12 a.m.
"Great."
She pushed herself out of bed.
Her apartment was small, but she had worked hard to make it comfortable. There was a sofa near the window, a wooden table that doubled as her study desk, and a small kitchen that could barely fit two people at once.
It wasn't much.
She worked really great for them and it was all hers.
Eliana walked toward the mirror hanging beside her wardrobe.
She looked tired.
Her dark hair was messy from sleep, and there were faint shadows beneath her eyes.
She sighed.
"Another beautiful morning, thank you Jesus."
She smiled at her own reflection.
It was something she did whenever life became difficult.
She joked.
She smiled.
She kept moving.
Because stopping meant thinking.
And thinking usually brought questions she didn't want to answer.
She turned away from the mirror and opened her wardrobe.
Her clothes weren't expensive, but they were clean and neatly arranged. She picked out a simple blouse and a pair of black trousers.
Today was another day at work.
Nothing special.
At least, that was what she thought.
By eight o'clock, Eliana was behind the counter of the small café where she worked.
The morning rush had already begun.
"Two coffees!"
"Table four needs their bill!"
"Eliana, can you take this order?"
She moved from one table to another, answering customers with the same polite smile she had perfected over the years.
"Good morning."
"Your order will be ready shortly."
"Thank you."
"Have a nice day."
She was good at her job.
Not because she loved it.
She simply knew how to survive and be contented with whatever she has.
Her coworker, Mia, leaned against the counter during a brief quiet moment.
"How do you do this every day?"
Eliana looked at her.
"Do what?"
"Smile at people."
Eliana laughed.
"It's part of the job."
"No. I'm serious. If I worked here as long as you have, I would have lost my mind."
"You almost do every Monday."
Mia laughed.
"That's because Mondays are evil."
Eliana smiled.
For a few seconds, everything felt normal.
Then the bell above the café door rang.
A man walked in.
Eliana barely looked up.
There were always new customers.
But something about this one made her pause.
He wasn't dressed like the usual customers who came in for breakfast.
Dark trousers.
A perfectly fitted coat.
Expensive-looking watch.
He carried himself with the kind of confidence that made people automatically move out of his way.
He glanced around the café before taking a seat near the window.
Mia nudged Eliana.
"New customer."
"I can see that."
"You go."
"Why me?"
"Because I'm busy."
"You are literally doing nothing."
"I am emotionally busy."
Eliana rolled her eyes.
"You're impossible."
She picked up the menu and walked toward the man's table.
"Good morning sir."
The man looked up.
Their eyes met.
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.
His expression remained calm, but something changed in his eyes.
Recognition.
Eliana frowned.
Had they met before?
She couldn't remember.
"Good morning," he finally replied.
His voice was deep and controlled.
"Can I get you something?"
He looked at the menu without opening it.
"Coffee."
"What kinda?"
"Black."
"Anything else?"
"No."
She wrote it down.
"Alright."
She turned to leave.
"Wait."
She stopped.
He looked at her again.
"What's your name?"
Eliana hesitated.
"Why?"
He seemed slightly surprised by her question.
Then the corner of his mouth lifted.
"I'm asking because I don't like ordering coffee from someone whose name I don't know."
Eliana gave him a suspicious look.
"That's a strange reason."
"Is it?"
"Yes."
He smiled.
"My name is Adrian."
She stared at him for a second.
"Okay, Adrian."
"And yours?"
She should have walked away.
Instead, she answered.
"Eliana."
Something flickered across his face.
So quickly that she almost missed it.
"Eliana," he repeated.
She nodded.
"Your coffee will be ready soon."
She walked away.
Adrian watched her.
He didn't touch the menu.
He didn't look at his phone.
He simply watched her disappear behind the counter.
His expression slowly changed.
There was something familiar about her.
Not her face exactly.
Something else.
Something he couldn't give an explanation to.
He reached into his coat and pulled out his phone.
There were several missed calls waiting for him.
He ignored them.
Instead, he opened a message he had received earlier that morning.
Have you found anything?
He typed a response.
Not yet.
He stared at the message for a moment.
Then he deleted it.
He wasn't sure why.
Maybe because, for the first time, he thought he might actually be getting close.
Eliana placed the coffee on Adrian's table.
"Here you go."
"Thank you."
She turned to leave.
"Eliana."
She looked back.
"Yes?"
"Have we met before?"
Her eyebrows pulled together.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Pretty sure."
He studied her face.
She looked genuinely confused.
"I don't think I'd forget you."
Eliana blinked.
"Was that supposed to be a compliment?"
"Maybe."
She laughed quietly.
"Well, I definitely haven't met you before."
She walked away.
Adrian watched her again.
Something was wrong.
He didn't know what.
But he knew he had seen that face before.
Not in person.
But in a photograph.
A very old photograph to be precise.
The one that had been sitting inside his father's private study for years.
A photograph he had only seen once.
And a photograph he had never understood.
That afternoon, Eliana returned home exhausted.
She dropped her bag on the chair and kicked off her shoes.
"Finally."
She walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.
Almost empty.
She stared inside.
"Tomorrow."
She closed it.
Tomorrow she would go to the market to restock.
Tomorrow she would organize her finances.
Tomorrow she would finally fix the loose handle on her bedroom door.
Tomorrow.
She had become very good at promising herself things for tomorrow.
Her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
She frowned.
She doesn't answer unknown numbers.
But something made her press the green button.
"Hello?"
Silence.
"Hello?"
Nothing.
Then the call ended.
Eliana stared at her phone.
"Okay..."
She placed it on the table.
A few seconds later, it rang again.
The same number.
She answered.
"Who is this?"
Still silence.
Then a man's voice finally came through.
"Stay away from Adrian."
Eliana froze.
"What?"
The line went dead.
She immediately called back.
The number was unavailable.
Her heart began beating faster.
Who was Adrian?
She knew only one Adrian which is the man from the café.
But why would someone call her about him?
She sat down slowly.
Maybe it was a prank.
Yes.
It had to be , she convinced herself to believe it was a prank.
She shook her head.
"People are strange."
She tried to dismiss it.
But the warning stayed in her mind.
Across the city, Adrian stood inside his father's old study.
The room had remained untouched for years.
He had avoided coming here whenever possible.
There were too many memories.
Too many unanswered questions.
His father had been a powerful man.
A man who had built an empire from nothing.
But there had always been one subject he refused to discuss.
A girl.
A name.
A secret.
Adrian walked toward the large bookshelf.
He ran his fingers along the books until he reached the third shelf.
Then he pulled out a thick black folder.
Dust covered the surface.
He opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
Old newspaper clippings.
Adrian turned the first few pages.
Then he stopped.
A photograph fell from the folder.
He picked it up.
It showed a little girl.
She couldn't have been more than four years old.
She had the same eyes as the lady he had met that morning the café.
Eliana.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
His jaw tightened.
On the back of it was a handwritten note.
If she is ever found, do not let her know who she is.
He read it twice.
Then a third time.
His phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Hello?"
A familiar voice spoke.
"Someone knows."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Who?"
"We don't know yet."
"What do they know?"
A pause.
"That she's alive."
Adrian looked down at the photograph.
For years, he had believed the girl in the photograph was dead.
Apparently, he had been wrong.
"Where is she now?" he asked.
"You're already looking at her."
Adrian went completely still.
"What?"
"The girl you've been asking about."
A long silence followed.
Then the voice said,
"She's working at a café."
Adrian slowly closed his eyes.
The pieces began falling into place.
The familiar eyes.
The strange feeling.
The photograph.
Eliana.
He opened his eyes again.
"What's her full name?"
The person on the other end hesitated.
Then answered.
"Eliana Rose."
Adrian's face changed.
He knew that name.
He had seen it before.
Not recently.
Years ago.
In a document his father had ordered him never to read.
Adrian looked back at the photograph.
The little girl smiled innocently at the camera.
She had no idea who she was.
No idea what belonged to her.
No idea that somewhere in the city, people were searching for her.
And most importantly...
She had no idea that she was the missing heiress of one of the most powerful families in the country.
Adrian tightened his grip around the photograph.
"Who is looking for her?"
The answer came quietly.
"Everyone."
The call ended.
Adrian remained standing in the silent room.
For the first time in years, he wondered whether uncovering the truth would protect Eliana...
Or put her in even greater danger.
That night, Eliana couldn't sleep.
She lay in bed staring at the ceiling.
The unknown caller's words kept replaying in her mind.
Stay away from Adrian.
She turned over.
Then she remembered the strange way Adrian had looked at her.
As though he knew something.
As though he had been trying to remember where he had seen her before.
She sat up.
"Who exactly are you, Adrian?"
Across the city, Adrian was asking himself an entirely different question.
Who is Eliana really?
Neither of them knew that the answers were buried in the same past.
And neither of them knew that someone had already started watching them.
Because the secret had remained hidden for twenty-two years.
But secrets don't stay buried forever.
And Eliana's was finally beginning to surface.
To be continued...
