My parents passed away, leaving me as the sole heir to the Dale family's twenty percent trust fund. But the people I trusted most-my fiancé and my own cousin-conspired to steal it all. They sent masked thugs to a cliffside, forcing me to jump into the freezing Atlantic Ocean. While I was drowning in the abyss, they were at the Waldorf Astoria, throwing a lavish engagement party. My fiancé put on a pained face for the cameras, claiming he would manage my shares in my memory. My cousin leaned against his chest, wearing the couture gown meant for my wedding. They thought they could murder me, roll around naked on my bed, and swallow my fortune without a trace. They truly believed I was just a stupid bimbo who deserved to be played and thrown away. But I didn't die in that pitch-black water. Instead, I was fished out by Wall Street's most ruthless billionaire, Caesar Whitfield. To survive and protect my inheritance, I signed a top-secret marriage agreement with him. The very next night, wearing a black silk dress, I kicked open the heavy doors of their engagement banquet. "My dear fiancé, my funeral hasn't even been held yet, and you're already rushing to marry my cousin?" I held up the USB drive containing their sex tape, backed by my new husband's heavily armed security team. It was time to take back what belonged to me.

Betrayed Heiress: The Billionaire's Contract Bride Chapter 1

"Your cousin Genie sends her regards, bitch. Jump, or we break your legs first!"

Freezing rain lashed against Aria Dale's golden-brown curls as she clutched her bleeding shoulder, her heels slipping on the muddy edge of the Long Island cliff. Two masked thugs closed in, swinging baseball bats engraved with the custom silver insignia of her cousin, Genie Woodard.

Aria's amber eyes locked onto them. She was the rightful heir to the Dale family. Her parents had died two years ago in a convenient "accident," leaving her a twenty percent family trust. But her fiancé Jax Coffey and her cousin Genie had been tangled up together for a long time, hollowing out that trust piece by piece, and a week ago they had planted those tabloid scandals to drag her down from her place as heir. Now they wanted her corpse too.

She bit her lower lip until the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Instead of begging, she turned and leaped backward into the pitch-black, churning Atlantic Ocean.

Icy water slammed into her mouth and nose, ripping the oxygen from her lungs. Her chest convulsed as the current dragged her down, her vision fading into a blur of freezing hatred.

Just as she sank into the abyss, a blinding searchlight sliced through the dark water. A massive black yacht bearing the Whitfield family crest tore through the waves.

On the main deck, Caesar Whitfield stood in a bespoke black trench coat, his deep ocean-blue eyes looking coldly down at the churning sea. His chief of staff, Estill Garza, held a black umbrella beside him.

"Sir, the crew just pulled a young woman out of the sea," one of the security contractors reported, hauling a limp body onto the deck. "She's barely breathing."

Caesar didn't even turn his head. "Throw her back. We don't pick up strays."

The men lifted the unconscious woman by the arms, ready to tip her over the rail. Just then, Caesar's gaze passed over her face-pale, soaked, and still strikingly beautiful. He paused for a heartbeat, and something he could not name made him raise his hand.

"...Wait. Bring her inside."

Several heavily armed security contractors carried her to the yacht's lower-deck medical bay. She was soaked to the bone, her pale face still strikingly gorgeous and her curves clinging to the wet fabric.

Estill followed Caesar into the corridor, but he didn't speak right away. It wasn't until they had reached the upper deck, with the wind and rain still lashing the windows, that Estill finally looked up from his tablet.

"Sir, we've got her identified," Estill reported in a low voice, turning the screen toward him. "It took a while-she had no ID on her, and we had to run her face through the harbor database."

Caesar took the tablet without a word.

"Aria Dale," Estill continued. "The rightful heir to the Dale family. Her parents are dead, and her twenty percent family trust is being stolen by her fiancé Jax and her cousin, Genie Woodard. Those tabloid scandals were planted-she was just hit with them a week ago."

Caesar looked down at the unconscious woman on the bed and turned to leave, but the satellite phone in his pocket vibrated. He answered it, and the booming roar of his grandfather, Alistair Whitfield, echoed from the receiver.

"Caesar, if you don't bring a wife home to the estate tomorrow, I'm shoving Clarissa Faulkner-the daughter of our oldest family friend-straight into your bed!"

Caesar's brows knitted slightly. He reached up to tug his tie loose, his gaze dropping back to the unconscious woman on the bed. He hung up and looked at Estill.

"Tell the legal department to draft a top-secret marriage agreement."

Estill froze, staring at the half-dead woman on the bed, and swallowed hard.

"Sir, she isn't even conscious to sign..."

"In Manhattan, my lawyers don't need her awake to make the paperwork legal," Caesar cut him off, turning to walk out.

Hours later, Caesar pushed open the heavy door to the yacht's bottom-deck medical bay. The steady beep of a monitor cut through the sharp smell of antiseptic. On the bed, Aria's fingers twitched before a violent coughing fit wracked her chest. She gasped for air and bolted upright, her hand immediately darting to the inner side of her left wrist to check the Victorian black-diamond ice-crystal bracelet.

Catching sight of him, she froze and shrank back against the headboard.

"You're awake? How are you feeling?"

Caesar walked over on long legs, letting his towering presence fill the narrow cabin. He stopped by the bed and tossed a white, gold-embossed certificate and a thick stack of documents onto her lap. She looked down, her pupils shrinking at the words "Marriage Certificate" on the cover. Flipping it open, she stared at the raised steel seal stamping her name beside his.

"What the fuck? Are you insane? I don't even know you!" Aria snapped, her knuckles turning white as she crushed the paper.

Caesar slid his hands into his trouser pockets and leaned down, his blue eyes locking onto hers.

"You don't need to know me. You just need to know that I bought your life."

"Bought it?" Aria's eyes widened, then narrowed. "Sir, I thank you for saving my life, and I will find a way to repay you. But don't joke about something like marriage."

Caesar's expression didn't change. "Aria Dale. Your parents are dead. Your fiancé Jax and your cousin Genie are carving up your twenty percent trust, and last week they planted those tabloid scandals to destroy your name. Right now, the only reason you're not at the bottom of the Atlantic is that I decided to fish you out. I am the best-the only-person who can keep you alive and give you back everything they took."

"And why should I believe you?" Aria sneered. "You only learned who I was from a tablet five minutes ago."

Caesar didn't get angry. He only pushed his hands deeper into his pockets, his tone as flat as if he were negotiating a deal.

"Caesar Whitfield, head of the Whitfield Group. The group controls shipping and finance on the East Coast, along with the very supply chain the Dale family depends on. Your cousin Genie can hire two men with bats. I can make every camera on the street go dark before they move, make her lawyers flip before the trial, freeze her accounts in a single day. Your parents' trust is being stolen piece by piece-I can make the people who stole it spit it back with interest."

He paused, his blue eyes carrying no warmth at all.

"I'm not here to negotiate with you, Aria. I'm here to tell you that the only card you have left to turn this around is me."

Aria fell silent. She stared down at the certificate, then away toward the dark porthole, her jaw tight. Genie's smiling face flashed through her mind, then the bats, then the black water closing over her head. She thought of her parents' graves, of the trust slipping through her fingers, of the tabloids screaming her name. And she thought of the name Caesar-a name even she had heard whispered in the same breath as power and fear.

"And if I refuse?" she asked quietly, without looking at him.

"Then Estill drives you back to the city, and you take your chances with your cousin." Caesar's voice was flat. "I'd give you a week. Maybe less."

Silence stretched between them. Aria closed her eyes. She had nothing left. Her parents were gone, the trust was gone, her name was ruined, and just now she had nearly lost her life. Going back meant death. Staying might be another trap. But she had already lost so much there was nothing left to lose-if she was going to die either way, she might as well gamble her life on something bigger.

When she opened her eyes again, her amber gaze was cold and steady.

"...Fine. Deal, sir."

Caesar raised an eyebrow at her quick surrender.

"Don't celebrate yet. You can't afford the price of breaching my contract." He turned toward the door, pausing halfway to glance back coldly. "Get changed. Estill will drive you back to the city."

Caesar pulled the door shut behind him, leaving her clutching the marriage certificate before stepping barefoot onto the cold floor toward the wardrobe.
