But as Emily's toxic relatives and her sister's crumbling marriage threaten to destroy her, Ethan steps in as her fierce protector. What begins as a deal between strangers slowly becomes a battle of hearts. Me & You By Contract Chapter 1 The Woman Who Saved Grandma Evelyn

The black SUV was going too fast. From her e-scooter, Emily Carter saw an elderly woman step into the crosswalk, her white curls bright beneath the July sun. Chicago heat shimmered above gridlocked traffic, leaving her dangerously exposed in the road. Her white cane wobbled as the dark vehicle barreled toward her.

Emily didn't think. She abandoned her scooter, which clattered loudly onto the scorching asphalt, and ran.

Heat burned straight through the thin soles of her sandals. A car horn blared, rattling her teeth and echoing off the surrounding brick buildings. She caught the woman's fragile arm and pulled with all her might. The SUV rushed past so close that Emily tasted exhaust and raw, burning fear. Behind them, the woman's white cane struck the pavement with a sharp clatter.

They stumbled clumsily onto the concrete curb. The woman sagged heavily against Emily, breathing in shallow, frightening gasps. Her skin felt paper-thin, pale, and clammy.

"Ma'am? Can you hear me?" Emily asked, her voice shaking.

The woman's eyelids fluttered. Emily fumbled frantically for her phone and dialed 911.

"Stay with me," she said, holding the woman's cool hand. "Help is coming."

Moments later, flagging down a passing taxi, Emily accompanied the stranger to the nearest hospital waiting room. The air smelled sharply of antiseptic and recycled ventilation. Emily sat with her elbows pressed against her knees, trying desperately to settle her shaking hands. The grillework of the speeding SUV kept flashing behind her eyelids, along with the woman's stumble and the fraction of a second that had separated rescue from disaster. Half a second later, and Emily would have been too late.

She pulled out her phone and called her sister.

"I'll be late, Olivia," Emily said when her sister answered. "An elderly woman collapsed near the crosswalk. I had to help her to the hospital."

Olivia's voice on the other end was tight and strained. "Daniel is already asking about dinner, Emily. He had a really long day at the office."

"I know. I'm sorry."

"Just come home when you can," Olivia hesitated, lowering her tone. "He's been complaining again. About the apartment. About you still being here."

The words landed like heavy stones in Emily's chest.

"I'll be back soon," Emily murmured.

She ended the call quickly before Olivia could hear the deep guilt cracking her voice.

A doctor eventually pushed through the swinging double doors. "The woman you brought in is stable. Her blood sugar had plummeted, which caused her sudden collapse. The near accident thankfully didn't injure her, though it gave her a fright. She's awake and asking for you."

Relief loosened something tight in Emily's chest. It didn't erase her exhaustion, but she followed the doctor down the sterile hallway.

The elderly woman lay propped against crisp white pillows, her hair fanned out. When she saw Emily, her sharp blue eyes brightened instantly.

"You," the woman said, her voice raspy but clear. "You saved my life."

"Anyone would have helped," Emily replied, standing awkwardly by the bedside.

"Would they?" The woman reached out and captured Emily's hand. Her fingers were cool, but her grip was surprisingly strong. "Sit down, child. I don't bite."

Emily sat. The genuine warmth in the woman's voice softened the sterile room.

"My name is Evelyn," she said. "And you are?"

"Emily Carter."

Evelyn began asking gentle questions about her work. Emily found herself telling her about the small independent bookstore: the inventory she'd chosen book by book, the narrow financial margins, the cozy reading nook built from salvaged wood, and the regular customers who came for recommendations and stayed to talk. She spoke with the guarded affection of someone fiercely protecting something she had built entirely on her own.

"And you live alone?" Evelyn asked astutely.

"With my sister's family. Temporarily."

Evelyn's sharp eyes narrowed slightly, but she didn't pry further. Instead, she studied Emily's face with quiet intensity.

"You have the look of someone who's been strong for a very long time," Evelyn observed softly. "It gets tiring, doesn't it?"

Emily swallowed hard against the lump in her throat. "Sometimes."

"You're not drifting, Emily. You're waiting. There's a big difference."

The words settled deep into a place Emily rarely allowed herself to examine. Before she could find a voice to answer, the door swung open. Two women in immaculate, tailored dresses and a tall man in an expensive designer suit entered the room. Their deference to Evelyn was immediate and formal. The man called her "Grandmother" and glanced over at Emily with polite, undisguised confusion.

Emily stood up immediately, suddenly acutely conscious of her sweat-stained shirt. "I should go."

"You'll see me again," Evelyn promised, her eyes twinkling. "I don't forget people who truly matter."

Two days later, Evelyn walked right into Emily's bookstore.

She used her white cane but carried herself with a mischievous sparkle, running her fingers along the book spines as if greeting old, familiar friends.

"I came to repay you," Evelyn announced proudly. "Not with money. You don't seem the type to accept charity. With my presence instead."

Emily laughed out loud. "That's a new one."

Evelyn settled comfortably into the worn armchair by the sunny front window. Emily made tea, and they spent hours talking about the shop, its regulars, and the challenges of keeping it open. Evelyn listened with genuine, deep interest, remembering tiny details from their hospital conversation. She even brought a worn copy of Jane Austen's Persuasion, remembering Emily's favorite author.

After that afternoon, Evelyn's visits became a wonderful ritual. Some mornings, Emily would arrive to find the older woman already seated in the armchair with two cups of steaming tea ready. They talked about almost everything except the things that hurt.

One afternoon, Evelyn casually mentioned a grandson named Ethan.

"He's a good man, but he works far too much. Lonely, I think," Evelyn sighed, looking at Emily sideways. "You remind me of him. Stubborn. Kind."

Emily set down her teacup, narrowing her eyes. "Is this matchmaking?"

"Perhaps," Evelyn smiled innocently. "A girl like you might be exceptionally good for him."

Emily laughed it off, but the thought lingered.

That evening, Emily returned to her sister's apartment and heard Daniel's voice booming through the thin door.

"She's been here six months, Olivia. Six months! She's not contributing enough, and I am tired of supporting her. She needs to find her own place."

Olivia answered sharply, her voice strained. "She's my sister. She's trying her best."

"Trying isn't paying bills. If she really cared about you, she'd leave. We need our own space."

The words landed like small stones. Emily stood frozen on the landing, her house keys digging sharply into her palm. She wanted to walk in and defend herself, but Olivia was already fighting her battles.

"I'm not asking you to choose," Olivia said, her voice cracking. "But she's family. She has nowhere else to go. And I can't just throw her out."

"She's an adult. She can figure it out."

Emily waited quietly until the voices quieted down, counted to thirty, then entered with a neutral expression and retreated straight to her room.

She didn't sleep that night. Daniel's words stung, but Olivia's strained defense hurt in an entirely different way. Her sister loved her, but Emily knew her presence was costing Olivia her peace. She couldn't stay. Not like this.

At 2:17 a.m., driven by sheer desperation, Emily picked up her phone and dialed Evelyn's number.

The older woman answered instantly, her voice completely alert despite the dark hour.

"Emily?"

"I've been thinking about what you said," Emily's heart hammered wildly against her ribs. "About your grandson. Is the offer still open?"
