Entangled with the billionaire heir Chapter 1 Eleanor wanyne

The blue glow from my dual monitors was the only thing holding back the heavy darkness of the room. It shimmered unequally against the coffee-stained glass of the desk, casting sharp uneven shadows across two piles of paper that had effectively split my life into separate, exhausting wars.

To the left, smooth white folders bearing the engraved gold logo of Wright & Miles PR. High-stakes crisis management. Press releases drafted to cover up corporate environmental negligence, reputation repair for multi-million-dollar tech firms, strategy memos for executives who made more in an hour than I did in six months.

To the right, a serene tower of heavy linen paper, smooth and untouched. Final warnings. Outstanding balances. Overdue notifications from Diamond Hospital.

Three hundred and forty-two thousand pounds.

That was the number. It didn't matter how many corporate fires I put out, or how many CEOs thanked me for salvaging their public image; my mother Daisy was fading away in a sterile white room on the third floor of a clinic across the city, and I was drowning in the price of keeping her heart pumping.

Staring outside my window, is the gigantic and beautiful tower bridge vibrating through the floorboards of my cramped, fourth-floor apartment in London. It was 2:14 AM. The air smelled stale, a mixture of cold, leftover filter coffee and the early morning frost hardening on the grass outside.

My phone's sudden vibration made the ceramic mug chatter against the desk.

My chest tightened instantly. At this hour, a call meant only one of two things: a corporate disaster that required an immediate press blackout, or the hospital.

I grabbed the phone, my thumb hovering over the screen. The caller ID read Diamond - Billing Office. Not the ICU. A bitter, sour wave of relief mixed with immediate dread washed over me.

"Hello! Eleanor Wayne speaking," I murmured, keeping my voice low so as not to wake the neighbors through the paper-thin walls.

"Eleanor, apologies for the late contact," a clipped, polite voice replied. "This is the automated answering system for Steven Campbell's office." He left a note to flag your file before the morning transfer. The extended trial medication for your mother's experimental therapy has officially cleared its grace period."

I reached out, my fingers tightening around the edge of the desk. "I sent a partial payment on the fifteenth. Five thousand pounds."

"Which covered the preliminary lab work from August," the voice stated without malice, which somehow made it worse. It was just arithmetic to them. "The custom immunotherapy protocol requires a secondary deposit of eighty thousand pounds by Friday at noon. If the deposit isn't verified, the hospital administration will be forced to transition your mother back to standard palliative care."

Palliative care!

The word hung in the cold air of my kitchen. Standard care meant comfort. Comfort meant waiting for the end. It meant stopping the one drug that had actually shrunk the tumor in her spine for the first time in eighteen months.

"Friday," I whispered, the word barely catching in my throat. "That's three days."

"Friday at noon," the voice repeated calmly. "We have provided maximum extension due to your mother's condition, but the pharmaceutical vendor requires payment upfront. Have a good night, Steven Campbell."

The line went dead.

I lowered the phone slowly. Eighty thousand pounds. I had four thousand in my savings account. My credit cards were maxed. I had already taken out a secondary loan against an apartment I didn't even own.

I looked back down at the smooth gold-embossed folder sitting on the left side of my desk.

Client: Universal Media Group.

Scope: Internal Audit Response & Restructuring.

Tomorrow morning or rather, in six hours, I was scheduled to lead a press strategy meeting for Rhett Wright, the senior partner at my firm. Universal was our biggest client, a ruthless media conglomerate currently engulfed in a quiet, high-stakes fraud investigation. If I delivered a flawless strategy to control the narrative, my end-of-year bonus might reach fifteen thousand. It wasn't eighty thousand, but it was a start. It was a lifeline I could negotiate with.

I stood up, my knees aching from hours of sitting, and walked over to the small balcony door. Pulling it open an inch, I let the icy London air slice through the room, cutting through the heat in my face. The city was asleep, wrapped in gray mist, completely indifferent to the fact that my entire world was collapsing one bill at a time.

I thought of my mother's face from my visit yesterday afternoon. Her skin was translucent, tracing the green veins beneath, her hand feeling like a bundle of dry twigs in mine. She had smiled, her voice barely a whisper: "You work too hard, Eleanor. Look at your eyes. You're carrying the world again."

She didn't know. She thought the insurance covered it all. She thought her daughter was just a successful corporate strategist living a glamorous life in the capital. She had no idea that every breath she took was being invoiced to a bank account that was completely empty.

I couldn't let them move her. I couldn't let them just sit back and watch her fade when the treatment was working.

Closing the balcony door, I sat back down at the desk. Sleep was out of the question. I pulled the Universal file towards me, snapping open the silver metal hook. If I needed to make myself indispensable to Rhett Wright by 9:00 AM, I needed to find something in these files that no one else had noticed. A leverage point. A narrative angle that would force the firm to give me an advance.

I flipped through pages of financial summaries, executive correspondence, and legal waivers. Page after page of sterile corporate speak.

Then, tucked deep behind an appendix of offshore account disclosures, a single sheet of heavy cream paper caught my eye. It wasn't standard office stock. It didn't have the Universal header.

It was a personal escrow agreement, dated three days ago.

I scanned the dense legal text, my eyes skipping over the preamble until a name stuck in my throat.

Beneficiary: Daisy Wayne.

Source Account: Confidential Trust - Ref #7709-X.

Amount: £250,000.

My heart stopped. The room went dead silent, the hum of the radiator vanishing entirely from my awareness.

I read it again. And again.

My mother's name was printed clearly on the document, alongside her national health registry number. Quarter of a million pounds, allocated specifically for her medical care at Diamond Hospital. The transfer status was listed as Pending Signature of Managing Director.

My hands began to shake violently as I looked at the top of the page to see which account the funds were coming from. The parent entity wasn't Universal. It was a private holding firm owned directly by Rhett Wright, my boss.

Why would a high-powered managing partner at a global PR firm secretly set up a quarter-million-pound medical trust for my mother? They had never met. He barely knew my name outside of board meetings.

Before my mind could even process the question, a sharp, sudden knock echoed through the quiet apartment.

I jumped, dropping the paper back onto the desk.

I froze, holding my breath. It was 2:45 in the morning. No one had visited this building by such time before.

The knock came again. Not loud, but deliberate. Three firm, heavy thumps against the wood of my front door.

I slowly stood up from the desk, walked down the narrow hallway, my bare feet cold against the hardwood floor.

"Who is it?" I called out, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to hold it steady.

No answer.

I reached the door, leaning forward to look through the small glass peephole.

An expensive charcoal suit stood out sharply against the dingy, yellowing light of my apartment building's hallway. Inside it was a man who clearly didn't belong here in London. Rhett Wright stood there, his coat wet from the rain, holding a thick leather folder under his arm.

He didn't look up at the peephole. He just stared straight at the door, as if he already knew I was standing right behind it.

Then, his phone rang in his hand. A second later, the screen on my own phone, left on the desk behind me illuminated the dark hallway with an incoming text message.

From: Rhett Wright

Open the door, Eleanor. We need to talk about what you just read.
