Falling for the hot alpha hockey star Chapter 1 One

Skylar's POV

Hey y'all welcome to my world of drama, buckle up cuz shit's messy and loud as hell .

"Skylar! What the hell do you think you're doing with him?"

That's not how you want to end a school day. That's not how you want to start any day. Unless, of course, you enjoy the entire schoolyard turning into your personal audience while your mom screams like she's headlining some reality TV show.

Heads swiveled, jaws dropped, and I considered throwing myself into the nearest trash can just to get it over with.

Beside me, Mila was already wheezing with laughter. "Your mom really knows how to make an entrance," she whispered.

"Don't encourage her," I hissed, forcing a smile like maybe, just maybe, this wasn't happening.

And Ryder? He just stood there, hands in his pockets, expression as blank as always. Like being called out by the scariest mom alive was just another Tuesday. Typical.

But okay, let's rewind before I start sounding like some tragic soap opera victim.

My name's Skylar . I belong to a werewolf pack, but here's the fun part: I can't shift. Never have. Never will. Everyone else in my family got the fur, the claws, the dramatic moonlight transformations. Me? Nothing. Nada. Zero. Just plain old me in plain old skin.

When I was four, all the other kids were out in the woods, running around in half-wolf form while their parents clapped like it was graduation day. I stood there, staring at the moon, waiting for something anything to happen. Spoiler: nothing did.

People started calling me "the lost pup." Cute, right? Like I was a misplaced sock. My sister Elena took it a step further and called me "failure." Honestly, points for creativity.

My parents didn't even bother naming my condition. They just sighed. Constantly. You'd think sighing was a competitive sport the way they did it. Long sighs, short sighs, disappointed sighs you get the picture.

School wasn't much better. Being the wolf who couldn't wolf made me the perfect punching bag. Kids shoved me into lockers, called me "human girl," whispered about me being cursed. You'd think it would toughen me up, but nope I mostly survived by keeping my head down and my comebacks sharper than my claws (oh wait, I don't have any).

The only reason I didn't combust by age ten was Mila Donovan. Mila was my best friend and possibly a future bodyguard if her temper ever got put on payroll. She didn't care that I couldn't shift. She didn't care that the entire pack looked at me like I was defective. She was just...Mila. Fierce, funny, completely insane in the best way.

Like one afternoon, we were walking across campus when some jerk from a rival pack sneered, "Hey, human girl. Lost pup wandering again?"

I was ready to pretend I hadn't heard him classic survival move but Mila stepped in front of me like a five-foot shield. "Back off," she snapped, eyes blazing.

They laughed, but they left. Mila turned to me, grinning. "See? You don't have to face them alone."

That was Mila. She saved me from drowning in my own freak label more times than I can count.

At home, though? Different story. Elena was relentless.

"Still can't shift?" she'd ask, barging into my room uninvited.

"Nope," I'd reply, eyes glued to my homework.

"You'll never be anything but a disappointment," she'd sigh dramatically before stealing my hoodie.

I wish I could say her words didn't hurt, but they did. Every time. And yet, I still wanted her approval. Call it masochism, call it sibling trauma whatever.

My parents weren't cruel, just...quietly crushing. Their disappointment filled the house like wallpaper. They were too busy with pack politics to deal with me anyway. Maybe they thought if they ignored my condition long enough, it would just magically fix itself. Or maybe they didn't know what to do with me. Either way, it left me stuck.

Nights were the hardest. When the pack howled under the full moon, I sat on my window ledge, staring up at the sky, begging for something to happen. For my bones to crack, for fur to sprout, for a howl to tear out of my throat. Nothing ever came. Just silence.

But here's the thing nobody realizes: being the "broken" one doesn't make you weak. It makes you observant. When you're the outcast, you notice things others miss. And while they're busy laughing at me, I'm busy surviving.

Because useless? No. I'm many things awkward, stubborn, hoodie thief victim but useless isn't one of them.

Besides, you don't have to be a wolf to bite.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

"We're friends," I said, voice barely steady. Aaron's lips curled, slow and cruel. "No, we're not." "Friendship's too pure for this." His hand slid to my waist, hot and claiming as he yanked me flush against him. "Do friends kiss like this?" He kissed me. Hard. Possessive. "Or grab each other like this?" A squeeze to my ass. A gasp. "Or think filthy little thoughts?" His breath burned against my ear. "Touch themselves to it?" My cheeks flamed. My body betrayed me. "Stop lying, Venus." His voice was a growl. "I feel it. Every time I'm near you." I whispered, "But you don't even like me." His smile was pure sin. "I don't have to like you to fuck you." Then the offer: "Let's get it out of our system. No lies. No strings. Just truth." He grabbed my chin, eyes lit with hunger. "Say the word, princess." A whisper against my lips- "I'll ruin you." And God help me... I wanted him to. --------- Aaron Sinclair needs a bride to claim his inheritance. Venus Carter needs a miracle to save her dying mother. What begins as a cold contract marriage spirals into a dangerous game of buried trauma, stolen identities, and forbidden attachment. He's ruthless, closed off, and refuses to love. She's resilient, lost, and refuses to stay unloved. But when secrets unravel revealing a stolen childhood, a tragic past, and a vengeful stepmother, their fake marriage is the only thing standing between them and destruction. In a world ruled by power and silence, will love dare to speak first or break them both instead?

I was once the princess of the Upper East Side, but now I’m just "debt wrapped in pretty skin." To keep my father alive in a federal penitentiary, I signed a contract I didn't fully understand. I thought it was about restoring my family's name, but producer Barnett Orr treated it like a bill of sale for my soul. Inside his limousine, the air smelled like gasoline and fear. Barnett didn't want a star; he wanted a victim. He bruised my jaw and ripped my vintage silk gown to shreds, laughing because he knew I couldn't fight back without signing my father's death warrant. "Don't forget who owns you, Felicity," he whispered. When he dragged me into Dewitt Knight’s penthouse party, I was a walking disaster. I huddled in Barnett’s oversized jacket, my lip bleeding and my spirit shattered. The elite crowd didn't see a victim; they saw a fallen girl selling herself for a role. A former rival poured red wine over me, and the room erupted in cruel laughter while Barnett told everyone he was just "testing my commitment." I looked up at the balcony, locking eyes with Dewitt Knight. He was a god in a bespoke suit, looking down at me with cold, lethal disgust. He didn't see the bruises or the desperation. He only saw a transaction he found beneath him. "So the rumors are true," he said, his voice cutting through the music. "The Aguilars really will do anything for money now. Even this." I was trapped between a monster who wanted to break me and a man who thought I was trash. No one cared that my father's life depended on my silence. When Barnett cornered me in a guest room later that night, his belt jingling like a death knell, I realized no one was coming to save a girl like me. I fought back with a crystal vase, shattering it against his shoulder, but I was drowning in my own terror. Just as Barnett lunged for my throat, the door was kicked off its hinges. Dewitt stood there, finally seeing the blood on the carpet and the map of purple bruises on my bare back. He chased the monster away, but I didn't feel safe. I locked the guest room door, wedged a chair under the handle, and slept with a silver letter opener pressed against my skin. When I crept into the kitchen at midnight and found him waiting in the shadows, I aimed the blade at his heart. "In this house, no one hurts you," he promised, his voice a low velvet rumble. But in a world where I had already been sold once, I knew that even protection came with a price I couldn't afford to pay.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."
