Chapter 1

Everyone in Kaelton envied me for the three elite young people my parents adopted, who treated me like a queen.

Rodger Burton spent millions to light up the city with fireworks for the whole night to celebrate my birthday.

Larry Burton planted roses throughout the estate to make me happy.

Ethan Burton crafted a unique ring just for me with his rib to prove his sincerity.

I was overjoyed, believing myself to be the happiest woman in the world.

But when I accidentally ate a cake containing peanuts and nearly went into shock, I overheard the three guys whispering to Cailey Kirk, the daughter of the servant, Vida Kirk, in the hospital corridor.

"Don't be afraid. She is merely allergic and went into shock. It is just a lesson for her."

"Isn't she allergic to peanuts? We doubled the amount in the cake to punish her so that she would never have the guts to show off in front of you again."

"Relax. She won't die. We just wanted to teach her a lesson for upsetting you."

I stood in the shadows, and my heart turned cold.

I nearly lost my life, but it was just the three guys' cruel joke to win Cailey over.

Looking at the emergency medication Jayden Price had sent to my bedside, I wiped my tears and called my father, Huxley Burton. "I agree to get married to Jayden."

Huxley was surprised.

He said, "Lorna, are you sure? Jayden has become quite irritable after he had a car accident and was disfigured."

I hadn't answered, and he sighed again. "Since you have made up your mind, we'll announce it at the company banquet in three days. Jayden is already recognized as the heir to the Price family and can bring more benefits to us."

I put away my phone and was about to push open the hospital room door when I heard laughter from the three guys and Cailey inside.

Five years ago, the three guys used to surround me like that, trying every way to make me happy.

Rodger spent millions on fireworks in the city for my birthday.

Larry planted countless roses throughout the estate for me.

Ethan crafted a unique ring from his own rib to show his true feelings.

But everything changed after Cailey arrived.

She was the daughter of the servant, Vida. When she just came to my home, she wore washed-out old clothes, and her eyes were always timid.

I pitied her and gave her a brand-new princess dress and even all of my pocket money.

Yet, she cried to the three guys that I had humiliated her with money.

Since that day, the three of them began to distance themselves from me.

Inside the hospital room, Cailey's intermittent sobbing could be heard. "It's all my fault that Lorna had an allergic reaction. I suggested the cake, but I didn't know she would react so severely... Will she ask Huxley to kick me out?"

Rodger snorted, "How dare she? Although she's the daughter of the Burton family, the Burton Group is managed by the three of us now. If she dares to lay a finger on you, I'll be the first to oppose it."

Larry's voice was as indifferent as always. "She's indulged and thinks the world should cater to her whims. This allergic reaction might even be her own act, just to get us to kick Cailey out."

An act?

I recalled how in the past, even a small cut on my finger would make Larry hold me and comfort me for a long while.

Yet now, I almost died in the emergency room, but they dismissed it as a calculated performance.

I opened the hospital room door expressionlessly.

The previously warm and joyful atmosphere froze instantly.

They all turned to look at me, their expressions varied.

Cailey immediately hid behind Rodger, peeking at me timidly.

Rodger shielded her completely, and his gaze towards me was grim. "Lorna, since you're fine now, come over and apologize to Cailey. She stayed up all night out of worry for you. Don't keep bullying her just because of your identity."

Ethan frowned and said with disdain, "Were you eavesdropping at the door? What did you learn when the Burton family paid so much for you to learn the etiquette?"

I looked at the three guys and felt bitter in my mind.

The Burton family had supported them, and they had sworn to protect me forever.

But they were now forcing me to apologize to Cailey, who almost caused my death.

How laughable it was!

I forced a smile and nodded. "Alright. I ruined your mood because I didn't die. I'm sorry."

I was finally brought back to the billionaire Vance estate after years in the grimy foster system, but the luxury Lincoln felt more like a funeral procession. My biological family didn't welcome me with open arms; they looked at me like a stain on a silk shirt. They thought I was a "defective" mute with cognitive delays, a spare part to be traded away. Within hours of my arrival, my father decided to sell me to Julian Thorne, a bitter, paralyzed heir, just to secure a corporate merger. My sister Tiffany treated me like trash, whispering for me to "go back to the gutter" before pouring red wine over my dress in front of Manhattan's elite. When a drunk cousin tried to lay hands on me at the engagement gala, my grandmother didn't protect me-she raised her silver-topped cane to strike my face for "embarrassing the family." They called me a sacrificial lamb, laughing as they signed the prenuptial agreement that stripped me of my freedom. They had no idea I was E-11, the underground hacker-artist the world was obsessed with, or that I had already breached their private servers. I found the hidden medical records-blood types A, A, and B-a biological impossibility that proved my "parents" were harboring a scandal that could ruin them. Why bring me back just to discard me again? And why was Julian Thorne, the man supposedly bound to a wheelchair, secretly running miles at dawn on his private estate? Standing in the middle of the ballroom, I didn't plead for mercy. I used a text-to-speech app to broadcast a cold, synthetic threat: "I have the records, Richard. Do you want me to explain genetics to the press, or should we leave quietly?" With the "paralyzed" billionaire as my unexpected accomplice, I walked out of the Vance house and into a much more dangerous game.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.
