The Mafia's wife Chapter 1 The Deal

The bass from the club floor buzzed up through the floorboards of the back office like a second heartbeat, and Maria Benedetti was doing her best to ignore both.

She had a cigarette burning between two fingers and a man on his knees in front of her.

"Say it again," Maria said. "Slower this time. I want to make sure I heard you right."

Danny Russo - twenty-six, mid-level, entirely too fond of the sound of his own voice - swallowed hard enough that she could see his throat move. "I said your father's getting soft. Letting a girl run his club.

Maria took a slow pull on the cigarette and let the smoke sit in her lungs a beat longer than she needed to, savoring the small, private violence of it before she answered.

"Here's what's funny," she said, crouching down so they were eye level, heels balanced, spine straight - the posture drilled into her long before she'd ever worn her father's name like armor. "You said that to Marco an hour ago. Marco told Sal. Sal told me. And nobody in this room stopped you, because nobody in this room actually believes I'm going to do anything about it."

She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes.

"I find that insulting, Danny. Truly."

His eyes flicked to Sal by the door, hunting for backup that wasn't coming, and something in his face went ugly and desperate.

"Everyone knows why you really left the Army, princess," he spat. "You didn't retire. You ran like a bitch".

Something in her went very quiet and very still, the way it used to right before things got loud.

She didn't remember deciding to move. One second she was crouched in front of him, cigarette smoldering between her fingers; the next, her palm had opened his cigarette out into the ashtray on the reflex and her other hand had already closed into a fist. The punch caught him clean under the jaw, all her weight turned into it, hips and shoulder and eleven years of training she'd never let herself forget. Danny's head snapped back and he went down like something had cut his strings, out cold before he hit the floor.

The room went silent except for the bass still thudding up through the boards.

Maria stood over him for a second, breathing hard, flexing her knuckles like she could shake the moment off her hand. Then she straightened her jacket, picked her cigarette back up off the ashtray lip, and took a slow drag like nothing had happened at all.

"Somebody get him some ice," she said. Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "And somebody get him a lesson in manners while he's at it."

Sal, by the door, hadn't moved the entire time. He never did - but he was looking at her differently now, the way people looked at her right after they remembered exactly what she used to do for a living, before they'd let themselves forget it. "Even I am curious why you left the army" Sal said.

"That's none of your business," she said, not looking at him. "Lock up when the last of them leave."

The fire escape outside her office was the only place in the building where the music dimmed enough to think. Maria sat on the top step with her jacket pulled tight against the October cold and lit a second cigarette off the last inch of the first, the way she always told herself she wouldn't and always did anyway.

Her hand wasn't quite steady. It hadn't been steady all week.

She flexed her fingers, watched them tremble faintly in the streetlight, and told herself it was the adrenaline coming down, the same crash she used to get after a mission when her body finally understood it was allowed to stop being ready for anything. That explanation had worked for years. It was getting harder to believe.

The pill bottle in her jacket pocket was down to four left. She hadn't told anyone that either.

She'd handled worse than Danny Russo with worse than four pills in her system. She'd handled things overseas that made a mouthy soldier in a nightclub look like a schoolyard scuffle. But there was a difference between what her body could do and what it cost her afterward, and lately the bill was arriving faster than she liked.

Her phone buzzed against her thigh. A text from her father, three words long.

*My office. Now.

Maria looked at the cigarette in her hand, already half gone, and exhaled slowly into the cold.

"Great," she muttered. "Can't wait."

She had no idea yet that by the time she left her father's office tonight, she'd be engaged to a man whose entire family held her name responsible for a grave.

Six miles away Vladimir Ivanov was awake, because Vladimir Ivanov was always awake.

The penthouse was dark except for the low light over the bar, where he stood with a glass he hadn't touched in twenty minutes, watching the city do the thing it did every night - glitter, pretend, lie to everyone looking at it from a distance. He knew the feeling. He'd built an empire on it.

Sleep did not come to him easily. It hadn't in eleven years, not since he was seventeen and hiding in a basement in Brighton Beach while men who worked for the Benedetti family finished what they'd come to do upstairs. He remembered the silence afterward more than the noise during. Silence had never sounded safe to him since.

His phone lit up on the bar. Yuri - his underboss, his oldest friend, the closest thing to family he had left that wasn't bound to him by blood he'd chosen to spill for.

*The old men made a decision. You're not going to like it.

Nikolai set the untouched glass down.

"When have I ever liked anything they decide," he said to the empty room, and picked up the phone.
