For five years, I was Brown Pennington's loyal "Old Lady," packing his gear, cleaning his wounds, and standing by him through every motorcycle club war. Tonight was supposed to be our victory celebration. But instead of celebrating with me, he stood on the clubhouse stage and publicly asked the leadership for a "blessing" to set me aside like a piece of old equipment. He wanted to replace me with Kaley Sims, the daughter of the rival club leader we just defeated. His mother, the club's matriarch, smirked in triumph, publicly ordering me to graciously step down and accept the humiliating status of a common club girl. When the veteran members protested this disgrace to our colors, Brown played his trump card: Kaley was pregnant. He expected me to quietly accept my public execution, acting as a live-in babysitter for his child while he played happy family with his new war prize. I looked at the man I had built a life with, realizing he was a stranger willing to sacrifice my honor and dignity on the altar of his selfish ambition. But I didn't crumble and cry like they thought I would. "My answer to my husband's request is no. A thousand times, no." I demanded a formal separation, took the keys to my dowry Cadillac, and drove off into the night. This time, I chose to fight for my own freedom.
Alaina's POV:
My husband, Brown, had taken Northside tonight. Our hostile gang "The Scythes" has been defeated.
The clubhouse had been ready long before the men arrived-beer cold, music loud, the smell of a party already thick in the air.
After hours of anxious waiting, the roar of several Harleys filled the night, and the men returned triumphantly.
The door opened, but the smile died on my face.
On the back of Brown's motorcycle was a young woman with dark hair. Her arms were wrapped around him like she belonged there. She laughed at something he said. He smiled back at her. They looked happy. Like a couple.
Around me, the room began to whisper.
"You see what he brought back with him?"
"Who?"
"They say she's a rival club's princess. The Scythes' daughter."
My heart dropped. A woman. Brown had brought back a woman. A rival's daughter.
The air in the clubhouse was thick with the smell of stale beer, sweat, and leather. It was a smell I had grown to associate with a specific type of dread, the kind that coiled low and cold in my heart.
I looked at him across the room. Our eyes met for a fraction of a second. I offered a small, hopeful smile, a pathetic little flag of truce. He looked away instantly, his jaw tightening.
Then, he took that woman upstairs. He protected the daughter of The Scythes' leader. But that doesn't matter. What really matters is that he took away my dignity.
I stood there, stiff, in place.
But I had never been someone who silently endured humiliation.
I started toward him. I needed to hear him say it wasn't true. That the woman was nothing. A rumor. A mistake.
A young man stepped into my path. A Prospect, his vest conspicuously clean of the patches that signified full membership. But this wasn't just any Prospect. It was Davis, Brown's shadow, his right hand.
"Mrs. Alaina. President's busy."
I stared at him. "He's not President."
Davis didn't blink. "Tonight he might as well be. Saint's on a run. Brown's running the table. He's very busy tonight."
The club's real President, Hardy "Saint" Lawrence, was away. Saint was not just a man. He was the charter's law, its final word, the one who could end a life or a war with a single nod.
"Busy with what? " I said. "Settling a woman into her new life? While his wife stands here like a stranger?"
"You've got it wrong," Davis said, his voice low and calm. "This is about peace. Stability. The club comes first. He's making sacrifices you can't see. You will learn soon what he sacrificed in order to support this club."
"Sacrifices," I repeated. The word tasted like ash."What's he sacrificing? His freedom? He's gaining a wife and a mistress in one night. The only sacrifice here is mine."
I felt the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes on my back.
The club girls, the Sweetbutts they called them, watched me with a mixture of pity and scorn. They whispered behind their hands, their painted lips moving like venomous flowers. I was the Old Lady on the verge of being put out to pasture.
"Look at her. Still wearing his ring."
"For now."
"You see the girl he brought in?"
"Everyone saw. And Mrs. Pennington's been smiling all night. That's never good."
"What's she planning?"
"Shh. She hears everything."
I caught my mother-in-law, Mrs. Pennington, watching me from her perch among the other senior members' wives. There was no pity in her eyes, only a cold, triumphant smirk. She raised her wine glass in a silent, mocking toast.
My heart hammered against my ribs. She knew. They all knew something I didn't. This party wasn't a celebration. It was an execution. And I was the one on the chopping block.
I gripped the sticky bar top, my knuckles turning white. I needed to get out, but my feet were rooted to the floor. Running would be an admission of defeat, and I had so little left to cling to.
I scanned the room for a friendly face. My allies were few and far between in this den of wolves.
Then the back door banged open.
Miles Hayes stormed in. He was a grizzled bear of a man, one of the club's founding members, and he didn't stop at the bar. He cut through the crowd, his face purple, his eyes fixed on the old-timers' table near the wall.
"Where the hell is Saint?" he growled.
The old-timer across from him didn't look up. "He's not here."
"Not here?" Miles slammed his hand on the table. "Saint never misses a victory party. Never."
"He does tonight."
"What's going on?"
"They say he gave Brown the table. The whole table. Brown speaks for him tonight."
"That boy brought back the Scythes' princess. Like a trophy. Like a bride."
"And Saint let him?"
"Saint gave him the power."
A murmur ran through the room. Saint's absence from a victory party was unthinkable. Until tonight.
But he hadn't just missed it. He had handed his authority to Brown. For tonight, Brown decided everything.
The title slipped out-a sign of his rising influence.
My heart turned. That meant Brown is the heir apparent of the Pennington family's power within the club, and the title slips out-a sign of his rising influence.
Now everyone understood. Now I understood. Tonight wasn't a celebration. It was my judgment day.
The music suddenly cut out. The raucous laughter and shouting died down to an expectant murmur.
A path cleared in the middle of the room. A spotlight, usually reserved for shoddy stripper routines, clicked on, illuminating the worn stage.
Brown stepped into the light. He looked handsome, powerful, like the king of this small, violent world.
My breath caught. He was going to do it now. He was going to announce our separation in front of everyone, a public shaming to cap off a private hell.
But he didn't look at me. He walked past the stage, his eyes fixed on the raised platform where the club's leadership sat.
His father, Mr. Pennington Sr., sat there, his face a stony mask. He was the patriarch of the family, the one who brokered the deals between their legitimate businesses and the club's darker enterprises.
I braced myself for the impact, the words that would shatter what was left of my world.
Brown stopped in front of his father.
The room held its collective breath, a tangible, heavy silence.
Then Brown did something I never expected.
He dropped to one knee. Not before me, his wife, but before his father.
He bowed his head, a gesture of absolute submission and fealty.
The silence deepened, becoming uncomfortable, predatory. This wasn't how MC business was done. This was family drama, played out on a club stage, and it felt deeply, horribly wrong.
Mr. Pennington Sr. looked down at his son, his expression unreadable, but a flicker of something-approval? resignation?-crossed his face.
My blood ran cold. This was worse than a simple announcement.
This was a ceremony. A transfer of power. A sacrifice.
