I am Julian Vance. Star quarterback of Highland Park. Son of the most powerful defense lawyer in Dallas. My life was perfect, my future mapped out, and Chloe Montgomery was by my side. Then Eli Miller transferred to my school. He came from South Oak Cliff with nothing but a beat-up gym bag and a raw talent that terrifies my father. He looks at me like my last name means nothing, and now he's taking everything that belongs to me,my spot on the team, and the girl I love. I wanted to destroy him. Until I found out the truth. Eli isn't just my rival. He's my father's secret son.

THE LAWYER'S FORBIDDEN SON Chapter 1 The Transfer Threat

The Friday afternoon sun blazed over the manicured turf of Highland Park High School, casting long golden shadows across the blue field. Heat radiated off the synthetic grass, making the air hum with the smell of rubber and fresh sweat.

Julian Vance stood at the thirty-yard line, adjusting his helmet chin strap with cold, methodical precision. The golden number twelve on his dark blue jersey caught the sunlight. Around him, the stadium stood quiet, empty bleachers stretching toward the modern press box where state championship banners fluttered in the breeze.

For three years, this field was his domain. As the son of Marcus Vance, the school head coach and top corporate lawyer, Julian was the undisputed golden boy of Highland Park football. Every play, every throw, and every win was mapped out for his route to a Division One college scholarship.

"Listen up!" Coach Vance's voice boomed across the turf, sharp as a whip.

The players gathered around the thirty-yard line in a tight circle, their shoulder pads clattering as they stepped into formation. Marcus Vance stood in the center, holding a clipboard in one hand and a whistle in the other. His face was a hard mask of discipline, his eyes scanning his players with cold evaluation.

"We have a new addition to the varsity roster starting today," Marcus announced, his voice carrying no warmth. "He transferred in from South Oak Cliff under special district approval. He plays wide receiver and safety."

A quiet ripple of whispers broke out among the players. Tyler, the team's starting linebacker and Julian's long-time friend, scoffed quietly. "South Oak Cliff? That is an inner-city school. Why are we taking transfers three weeks into the fall semester?"

"Quiet," Marcus commanded instantly, his laser glare freezing Tyler in place. "Eli Miller, step forward."

A tall, broad-shouldered guy stepped out from the edge of the huddle. He wore a faded gray workout shirt, dark shorts, and worn black cleats that had seen better days. His dark hair fell loosely across his forehead, shadowing sharp, calm eyes that showed zero fear standing in the middle of Highland Park's expensive campus.

Julian stared at him. There was something about the way Eli stood, relaxed yet ready to spring into action, that instantly made the back of Julian's neck feel cold.

"We are running seven-on-seven pass drills," Marcus ordered, setting his clipboard down on a water cooler. "Julian, you take the first team offense. Eli, you take the second team defense at free safety. Let us see if you can handle the speed of Highland Park football."

"Got it, Coach," Eli said softly, his voice low and steady.

Julian stepped up behind the center, tapping his cleats against the turf. He scanned the defensive secondary. Eli was back there, standing ten yards deep, his knees slightly bent, watching Julian's eyes with unsettling focus.

"Set, hut!" Julian called out.

The ball was snapped. Julian took a rapid three-step drop, watching his tight end break wide across the middle. It was a route they had run a thousand times. Julian stepped into his throw, releasing a fast, tight spiral aimed straight for the tight end's chest.

Out of nowhere, a dark blur cut across the field.

Eli broke on the ball with terrifying speed, exploding out of his stance before the ball even reached its peak. He leaped into the air, reaching up with long arms, and snatched the leather straight out of the sky right in front of the tight end's hands.

Eli landed on his feet with flawless balance, tucked the ball into his side, and jogged three steps before tossing the ball back to the referee.

The entire practice field went dead silent.

Tyler stared in shock. The offensive line stood frozen. Julian's arm remained extended, his chest heavy as he stared at Eli in total disbelief. No one had intercepted Julian in seven-on-seven drills all summer.

Eli caught Julian's gaze through his helmet visor. He did not celebrate. He did not talk trash. He just gave Julian a quiet, blank stare before jogging back to his position at safety.

"Great break, Miller!" Coach Vance called out, his voice ringing across the quiet field. For the first time all afternoon, a faint nod of approval showed on Marcus's hard face. "That is how you read the quarterback's eyes! Julian, step back in. Run it again."

Julian felt a hot spike of blood surge into his ears. His father never praised players during practice, especially not transfers on their very first drill.

He lined up again, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the football. "Set, hut!"

This time, Julian faked a quick handoff to the left, setting up a deep post route down the right sideline for his fastest wide receiver. He put everything he had into the throw, launching the ball forty yards down the field into a tight window.

Eli turned, hips fluid, sprinting backward with effortless speed. He tracked the spinning ball through the bright sky, leaped near the sideline, and swatted the pass down into the turf with his open palm, completely denying the completion.

The whistle blew loudly.

"Defense wins the rep!" Marcus shouted, clicking his stopwatch. "Bring it in!"

Julian pulled off his helmet, his blonde hair wet with sweat. His heart hammered wildly against his ribs, not from physical fatigue, but from a sudden, sharp panic that clawed at his chest. Eli Miller was not just a backup transfer. He was faster, sharper, and played with an aggressive instinct that instantly made everyone else on the field look slow.

As the team walked toward the water coolers, Tyler bumped Julian's shoulder pad. "Who is this guy, Julian? Coach looked at him like he just found gold."

"I don't know," Julian muttered, wiping his face with a towel, his eyes locked on Eli, who was quietly drinking water near the bench alone.

After practice ended, the sun began dipping behind the tall stadium bleachers, painting the sky in deep shades of orange and dark purple. The players headed into the locker room, their heavy boots clattering against the concrete steps.

Julian stayed behind on the field, unlacing his cleats while sitting on the metal bench. He needed a moment alone to clear his head before dealing with his father on the ride home.

"You have a strong arm," a quiet voice said from behind him.

Julian turned his head quickly. Eli stood near the sideline fence, carrying a black canvas gym bag over his shoulder. He had already changed into a dark hoodie and black jeans, looking completely out of place in the school's wealthy atmosphere.

"You cut the route early," Julian said, his voice cold and defensive. "If my receiver had cut harder to the outside, that play would have been a touchdown."

"Maybe," Eli said, stepping closer to the bench. "Or maybe you telegraph your throws with your shoulders before your foot even hits the ground."

Julian stood up off the bench, stepping toward Eli until they were standing face to face. Julian was slightly taller, but Eli held his ground, his calm eyes showing zero sign of backing down.

"Listen to me, transfer," Julian warned, dropping his voice into a quiet register. "I don't know why my dad brought you here from Oak Cliff, but this is my team. I have built this offense for three years. Don't think two good defensive plays change anything."

Eli looked at Julian, a small, subtle smile touching the corner of his mouth, though his eyes remained dark and serious. "I didn't come here to play games with you, Vance. I came here because I need a championship ring and a Division One scholarship to get my family out of Oak Cliff. I don't care about your reputation, your dad's money, or who owns this team."

"Then stay out of my way," Julian snapped.

"I don't get in anyone's way," Eli said softly, slinging his bag higher onto his shoulder. "Unless they are standing between me and where I need to go."

Before Julian could answer, the heavy wooden door of the athletic office swung open across the courtyard. Coach Marcus Vance stepped out onto the concrete walkway, holding a thick yellow folder under his arm.

"Eli," Marcus called out, his deep voice carrying sharply through the quiet evening air. "Your mother called the main office. I have your official housing transfer documents ready for signature. Step into my office before you leave."

Eli nodded toward the coach. "Yes, sir."

He turned and walked toward the office building, leaving Julian standing alone on the dark field.

Julian watched his father open the office door for Eli, ushering the transfer student inside before shutting the door firmly behind them. Julian's chest felt tight. His father had never once opened an office door for any player on the team, not even for Julian.

Moving silently across the damp turf, Julian walked toward the side of the athletic office building. A small window was cracked open an inch to let the evening breeze in.

Julian pressed his back against the cool brick wall right beside the window, keeping his breath shallow as he listened to the voices inside.

"Your mother signed the preliminary transfer agreement this morning, Eli," Marcus voice echoed through the small window, calm and unusually warm. "Once the district approves the residence change, you will officially be cleared to live in the Highland Park district under my personal supervision."

"Coach," Eli voice sounded cautious. "My mom was worried about the legal details. She doesn't understand why a head coach is personally filing housing paperwork for a transfer."

A short pause followed. Inside the room, the sound of paper rustling filled the quiet air.

"Because you are not just any transfer player, Eli," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly serious tone that made Julian's blood run ice cold against the brick wall. "Seventeen years ago, I made a promise to your mother before I ever established my law firm or built this house. You belong in this program, Eli. And whether Julian likes it or not, I am going to make sure you get everything that is owed to you."

Outside the window, Julian's eyes widened in total shock. His hands began to shake as he gripped the cold brick edge of the wall, his breath catching painfully in his throat as the dark truth crashed down upon him.
