On the day Evelisse Arden discovers she is pregnant, she also discovers her husband has already planned their divorce. For six years, she believed Caelen Varren was simply a cold husband who never loved her enough. Then she finds the divorce papers. And a photograph of a woman who looks exactly like her. Caelen says the woman is dead. Evelisse soon discovers that is only the first lie. Someone has been watching her. Someone knows about her unborn child. And buried beneath her family's past is a secret that Caelen has spent years trying to keep hidden. The more Evelisse investigates, the more terrifying the truth becomes. Her marriage was never as simple as she believed. Her family has been lying to her. And the man she is divorcing may be the only person standing between her and the people who have been waiting for her to remember. But when Evelisse finally discovers why Caelen let her go... She may wish she had never loved him at all.
The second line showed up so faintly that Evelisse nearly convinced herself she'd made it up.
She stared at the test. Looked away. Then back.
That tiny, unmistakable line stared right at her.
She held her breath. The bathroom seemed to close in-the walls, the golden lights, the huge mirror all watching as her reflection turned into someone she didn't recognize.
Pregnant.
The word dropped in her mind with enough force to echo.
Again, more certain.
Pregnant.
She lowered herself onto the closed toilet lid, still clutching the test like it might disappear if she let go.
Six years. She'd been married six years.
Six years sleeping beside a man she loved and always pretending not to see how carefully he kept her at arm's length. Six years arguing with herself that Caelen would change. Next year. Maybe after another anniversary. Maybe once they had a baby.
Not that she'd ever dared say that last part, even inside her own head.
But now, here it was-a life, quietly taking root inside her without bothering to ask anybody's permission. No warning. Just there.
Evelisse let out a quiet sound-half laugh, half disbelief.
She pressed her hand, already shaking, against her belly. "Hello," she whispered, almost laughing at herself, tears welling up just the same.
She wiped her eyes before the tears could fall.
And for the first time in so long, the dream bubbled up-dangerous, bright, and stubborn. A family. Not the thing people took pictures of for magazines. Not the smile for the reporters. Something real. Small. Something the two of them could call their own.
She pictured Caelen's face when she told him. He'd be surprised. Of course he would. But maybe a real smile would break through. Maybe she'd walk into his office that night, set that tiny pair of shoes she'd just bought on his desk, and see his cold, grey eyes soften-just a little.
Maybe he'd finally let go of business for one night. Maybe he'd hold her, without thinking he had to remember not to.
Her heart squeezed. "Maybe this is it," she whispered.
Maybe this would be the thing that made them a real family at last.
-
By noon, she'd already found the tiniest white baby shoes she could buy. They were barely bigger than her palm. She sat in the back of the car, holding them, unable to stop smiling.
The driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "Madam?"
She curled her fingers around the shoes. "Yes?"
He hesitated, almost smiling himself. "You're happy."
She turned toward the window. "I have a reason."
She nearly blurted everything right then, but bit her tongue.
It felt strange, actually carrying happiness out in the open. She'd gotten so used to tucking it away.
Caelen hated surprises. He liked facts and figures, contracts, schedules-everything nailed down. She'd always been the one surprise in his carefully measured world.
Maybe that's why things had never quite become what she wanted them to be.
She'd fallen in love with him slowly. He'd never said when-if ever-he'd done the same. Their wedding had been stunning. Their lives were perfect on paper. Even their house looked like a magazine spread.
Still, the space between them stayed empty. Sometimes, late at night, he'd reach for her in his sleep. She counted those moments as treasure, because he seemed closest then. Unconscious-unguarded against her.
She'd wake up with his arm wrapped around her waist. She'd hold perfectly still.
Then he'd wake. The distance would fall back into place.
But tonight-tonight she would tell him.
Tonight she'd say, We're having a baby.
And maybe-just maybe-everything would shift.
-
Caelen was supposed to be home at eight. At eight fifteen, Evelisse checked her phone. Nothing. At eight forty, she checked again. Nothing.
By nine, she'd sent him a message. Are you coming home?
Delivered, but no answer.
She stared at her phone, set it face down on the table, and tried not to worry. She'd promised herself years ago not to become the wife who sat around waiting for crumbs of attention.
Ten minutes later, she picked her phone up again. Still nothing.
She sighed. He did work late. She knew that. She knew all his habits, really. Or used to.
By nine thirty, she couldn't sit still anymore. She pulled the tiny shoes from their box, slipped them into a little velvet pouch. Time to surprise him at the office-something she'd done a hundred times, hoping he'd finish faster if she showed up.
Maybe tonight would be different.
She changed into a simple cream dress-nothing fancy, nothing that would give her away-and left the house.
-
His office was on the top floor. By the time she got there, the building was half asleep-lights out, empty halls. The night security guard stood when he saw her.
"Mrs. Varren."
"Is Mr. Varren still here?"
He blinked. "Yes," he said finally. "His office light's on."
"Thank you."
She took the elevator up, feeling her heart beat in her throat. The building felt strange tonight-maybe it was the emptiness, or the guard's look, or just nerves.
The executive floor was dark except for Caelen's office. The door was ajar.
She almost smiled. He was here. She could picture his surprise.
"Caelen?" she called softly, pushing open the door.
No answer. The office was empty. Lights on, laptop open; his jacket hung on the back of his chair. He'd been here, just not now.
She stepped in. "Caelen?"
Nothing.
Her eyes landed on a black folder, neatly centered on the desk-like someone had left it there on purpose.
Her name stared up at her in bold letters: EVELISSE ARDEN VARENN.
A cold weight settled in her gut. The shoes in her hand suddenly felt heavy.
Nobody called her that. Not Caelen. Not Eve, not Mrs. Varren. Just Evelisse Arden Varren, as if the person inside had vanished.
Swallowing, she reached for the folder. Maybe it was just business-something to do with shares or contracts.
But as she opened it, the world tilted.
The first page carried four words:
PETITION FOR DIVORCE.
She didn't move. Her eyes traced the line again, down the page, back up. Divorce.
Her fingers went numb. "No," she said, before she even realized.
She flipped the pages. And there it was-signatures, lawyers' notes, property splits, custody. All in neat, clinical order.
This wasn't a draft or a threat. This was finished, detailed, stamped and ready.
She read faster. Asset divisions, transfers, new accounts, six months of careful untangling.
Six months?
Six months ago, Caelen kissed her in the kitchen before work. Two days before that, he held her during a storm and said he loved her. Six months ago, he was already planning this.
Her eyes burned hot. She refused to let herself cry. Not now.
There was one more section, buried at the end: Child or Future Pregnancy Clause.
Her heart stuttered. She read it. And again.
It spelled out exactly what would happen if she got pregnant before things were finalized.
Her hand slipped to her stomach. The baby inside her felt suddenly exposed.
Caelen had planned for this-her pregnancy-before she even knew. Before she ever thought to hope.
A single handwritten note was clipped to the last page.
Do not allow Evelisse to make any decisions regarding the child until the matter is resolved.
Her heart just about stopped.
The office door clicked shut.
Evelisse froze, every instinct telling her not to turn. She recognized his presence at her back. Calm and cold as ever.
Caelen's footsteps, unhurried, crossed the room. He stopped behind her.
She kept staring at the paperwork, her hand pressed over her stomach.
His voice cut through the silence.
"You weren't supposed to find that."
