Chapter 1 Break up

ALEX'S POV

"Sis pretty please, will you help me to asked Bryan if he already have a new girlfriend?" My best friend Liz said with matching puppy eyes.

I just rolled my eyes on her. "Will you please stop?! You are the one who broke up with him remember? Then you are acting like that!"

Last month, Liz broke up with Bryan and she did not tell me what happen and the reason why she broke up with him. And no matter how many times I asked her, she keep on saying that "it did not workout." She didn't want to elaborate it anymore. This was the reason why I'm a bit confused why she keeps on convincing me to asked Bryan about his love life.

It was not surprising why Liz chose me to asked Bryan about his love life because I got close to Bryan since the day Liz introduced him to me.

I am really comfortable with guys. Maybe the reason why I can go easily with them. Same with the boyfriend of some of my friends. Maybe because I'm one of the boys. Sometimes people misinterpret my closeness with them. Maybe that was the reason why their ex boyfriend thought that they like me and even wanted to court me.

Yes. It always ended up like that, but I never entertained anyone. And because of that I lose some of my friends.

I actually had a huge crush on Bryan before, but I removed him from my crush lists when Liz introduced him to me as her boyfriend.

She pouted like a child and started to throw tantrums. Liz do you really think that you are a child and you act like that?

I sighed and gave up. "Okay fine. I know that you will not stop pestering me."

After I said that, Liz went to me and hug me. "Yehey! Thanks sis your the best!"

I just rolled my eyes and got my phone to text Bryan.

To: Grandpa

'Hey Grandpa do you have a new girlfriend now?'

I texted him. I'm a straight to the point type of person. I don't want to beat around the bush. There were times that people get shocked with my straightforwardness. I shrugged them off. I hate plastic. For me what you see is what you get. But don't get me wrong, I can still filter the things that is coming out from my mouth. I sometimes become sensitive with other's feelings too.

"Omg sis! You are too straight forward. You should have asked his condition first before you asked him about that. He might think that I'm the one who asked you to asked him."

I rolled my eyes. "Isn't that the truth?"

"Errr... even if it's true, he should not find it out. He might find it weird because I was the one who break up with him but it looks like I'm the one chasing him." She reasoned out.

"I also thought the same. Why did you break up with him when it was so obvious that you still like him?" I asked her for the nth time.

She did not answer me. I sighed and said. "Well you know that I hate beating around the bush."

In just a few minutes, Bryan texted me back. It looks like my grandpa was not busy. I call him grandpa as my endearment to him.

Liz and I read his text.

From: Grandpa

'Yes. Why?'

I looked at Liz. I can see confusion and sadness in her eyes. Well even I was quite surprised of his answer because I thought that he doesn't have a girlfriend.

"You okay?" I asked a bit worried.

She nodded and gave me a forced smile.

"So what now? He said that he already has a girlfriend?"

"Yes I know."

"Why did you break up with him in the first place?!" I asked her again hoping that she will tell me what really happened.

"Nothing."

I feel so pissed because of her answer! "Am I not your best friend? Why are hiding this from me? Why can't you tell me the reason why you decided to broke up with him?!"

I can't understand why she was hiding it from me.

"Liezel Mae Rivera do you really want to keep it from me?" I asked in a serious tone.

She heaved a heavy sighed. "I just felt like he changed. He's not the same person that I knew. I felt like he already has someone in his heart. And I'm right. See? He already has a new girlfriend."

"Actually I'm also quite surprise because he never mention that to me."

"I also asked Bryan what happen to them. What was the reason of their break up but even Bryan didn't want to tell it to me. As per him it was hard to explain." I told her.

"Of course he will have a second thought to tell it to you because you are my best friend." I can hear the bitterness in her voice.

"Wait a minute, why did you think that he already has someone else?" I asked curiously.

Even I didn't notice it.

She heaved a heavy sighed. "He became cold to me. Then I noticed that he always on his phone texting and sometimes he's calling someone."

"Have you confronted him about that?" I asked her.

She shake her head.

My eyes widen. "What?! You did not confront him first about your it before you break up with him?!"

I think that I will go crazy because of this girl. Maybe Bryan has a reason why he's busy with his phone. It's not that I am taking his side, I find it hard to believe that he was cheating or something.

We often text each other, he even calls me. He was so thick-faced if he's cheating on my best friend while being friendly with me. I can't believe that she broke up with him because of unconfirmed suspicion.

Also, Bryan did nothing to fixed their relationship.

"I got scared to find out the truth."

Can I punched my best friend?! "And now you are acting like that Liezel Mae Rivera? What do you really want to happen?"

She just lower her head. Sadness is visible on her face. I kind of feel guilty. I felt like I hurt her.

"Sorry sis. I'm being insensitive "

She shake her head and smile. "Don't think about it. Anyway, can you ask him the name of the girl?"

I look so shocked, I didn't expect that my friend was such a masochistic.

I rolled my eyes and started to text him again.

To: Grandpa

'Is it okay to ask the name of your girlfriend?'

Few minutes later he replied. I decided to read it first while my best friend was still emotional. My eyes widen when I read the name of his new girlfriend.

From: Grandpa

'Alexandria Ramirez. :)'

W-wait! That was my name?!

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.

I spent four hours preparing a five-course meal for our fifth anniversary. When Jackson finally walked into the penthouse an hour late, he didn't even look at the table. He just dropped a thick Manila envelope in front of me and told me he was done. He said his stepsister, Davida, was getting worse and needed "stability." I wasn't his wife; I was a placeholder, a temporary fix he used until the woman he actually loved was ready to take my place. Jackson didn't just want a divorce; he wanted to erase me. He called me a "proprietary asset," claiming that every design I had created to save his empire belonged to him. He froze my bank accounts, cut off my phone, and told me I’d be nothing without his name. Davida even called me from her hospital bed to flaunt the family heirloom ring Jackson claimed was lost, mocking me for being "baggage" that was finally being cleared out. I stood in our empty home, realizing I had spent five years being a martyr for a man who saw me as a transaction. I couldn't understand how he could be so blind to the monster he was protecting, or how he could discard me so coldly after I had given him everything. I grabbed my hidden sketchbook, shredded our wedding portrait, and walked out into the rain. I dialed a number I hadn't touched in years—a dangerous man known as The Surgeon who dealt in debts and shadows. I told him I was ready to pay his price. Jackson and Davida wanted to steal my identity, but I was about to show the world the literal scars they had left behind.

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.
