Chapter 1 Unplanned Pregnancy

"Congratulations, ma'am. You are six weeks pregnant!" said the smiling doctor as he handed me the pregnancy test result.

My hands shook as I held the piece of paper and looked at the words I could make out on it. I had only slept with him once. How could I get pregnant?

What should I do now?

If I told Elliott about this, would he be happy and continue with the marriage because of the baby?

Of course not! The Elliott I knew would most likely accuse me of trying to trap him with a baby. He was definitely not going to change his mind about divorce.

Sadness and confusion beclouded me. I stuffed the report in my bag and left the hospital.

There was a shiny black Maybach parked outside the hospital building. The window was partially open. The handsome and cold face of the man in the driver's seat was visible for all to see.

As always, this man commanded attention because of his attractiveness. Some women-old and young, even swooned over him as they went about their affairs.

This man was none other than Elliott Crawford, the man responsible for my pregnancy. He was rich and handsome. If there was anyone who knew best how charming he was, that would be me. I had gotten used to this scene after so many years. Turning a blind eye to the women who were winking at him, I got in the passenger seat.

Elliott, who had been resting with his eyes closed, frowned slightly. Without opening his eyes, he asked in a low voice, "Are you done?"

"Yeah." I nodded and held out the contract signed by the director of the hospital. "Mr. Kershaw sends his greetings."

It was initially planned that I came here alone to get the contract signed. But I met Elliott on the way. To my surprise, he gave me a ride without me asking.

"You are responsible for this project from now on." Elliott wasn't a man of many words. But whenever he spoke, his words were authoritative, leaving no room for argument or suggestions. He started the engine, showing no intention of taking the contract.

I nodded awkwardly and withdrew my hand.

Silence was my watchword whenever I was with Elliott. It had taken me Herculean effort to get used to it. With time, I became very obedient as I worked for him.

Elliott didn't drive back to the villa. Instead, he drove downtown. It was already evening. Where was he taking me? Although I was curious, I didn't dare to question him. I remained silent like I always had whenever he did something out of the ordinary.

When my mind went to the pregnancy test result in my bag, I felt a boulder settle in my gut. I didn't know how to break the news to him. I stole a glance at him and saw that his cold eyes were fixed on the road.

"Elliott..." I finally broke the silence as my hands which were holding my bag became sweaty. Beads of sweat appeared on my head and also went down my back.

"Spill!" Elliott commanded coldly, already sensing that I had something to say.

It wasn't surprising at all that he was this way. He had always treated me like this. Although it upset me when we first met, I gradually got used to it. I took a deep breath and muttered, "I am..." The words I wanted to say were simple.

It was only three words. However, his phone rang out of the blue, causing me to shut up and continue fidgeting.

"What's up, Olivia?"

Some people were capable of loving just one person in their lifetime. They gave this special person all their love while treating every other individual like trash.

Elliott was one of such persons. His tenderness was only for Olivia Tucker. I could tell just from the way he spoke to her.

I didn't know what Olivia said to Elliott, but he suddenly hit the brakes and said comfortingly, "Don't cry, okay? I'll be there soon. Just stay at home and wait for me."

The moment he ended the call, his face turned cold and stern as if he flipped a switch. He looked at me and uttered, "Get off!"

It was an order without any room for negotiation.

This was not the first time he left me by the roadside. I nodded, swallowed all the words, and got off before he could repeat himself.

My marriage to Elliott was an accident and also a destiny, but it had nothing to do with love. The woman Elliott loved was Olivia. I was just a woman who stood in his way of love; someone he couldn't wait to throw away once he got the chance.

Two years ago, Elliott's grandfather, Lorenzo Crawford, suffered from myocardial infarction. As he lay on his sick bed, he ordered his grandson to marry me. Elliott didn't want to. However, he had no choice. Our marriage was hell from day one. He treated me as if I didn't exist. Now that Lorenzo had passed away, he couldn't wait to divorce me.

It was already dark by the time I returned to the villa. This big and empty house always gave me chills. I couldn't stop thinking of it as one of the haunted houses they showed in horror movies. I had no appetite. Perhaps it was because of the pregnancy. I just took a shower and went to bed.

I was just about to doze off when I heard the vague sound of a car parking in the front yard.

Was Elliott back?

Wasn't he staying the night with his beloved Olivia?

For seventeen years, I was the crown jewel of the Kensington empire, the perfect daughter groomed for a royal future. Then, a cream-colored envelope landed in my lap, bearing a gold crest and a truth that turned my world into ice. The DNA test result was a cold, hard zero percent-I wasn't a Kensington. Before the ink could even dry, my parents invited my replacement, a girl named Alleen, into the drawing room and treated me like a trespasser in my own home. My mother, who once hosted galas in my honor, wouldn't even look me in the eye as she stroked Alleen's arm, whispering that she was finally "safe." My father handed me a one-million-dollar check-a mere tip for a billionaire-and told me to leave immediately to avoid tanking the company's stock price. "You're a thief! You lived my life, you spent my money, and you don't get to keep the loot!" Alleen shrieked, trying to claw the designer jacket off my shoulders while my "parents" watched with clinical detachment. I was dumped on a gritty sidewalk in Queens with nothing but three trunks and the address of a struggling laborer I was now supposed to call "Dad." I traded a marble mansion for a crumbling walk-up where the air smelled of exhaust and my new bedroom was a literal storage closet. My biological family thought I was a broken princess, and the Kensingtons thought they had successfully erased me with a payoff and a non-disclosure agreement. They had no idea that while I was hauling trunks up four flights of stairs, my secret media empire was already preparing to move against them. As I sat on a thin mattress in the dark, I opened my encrypted laptop and sent a single command that would cost my former father ten million dollars by breakfast. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves, but they forgot one thing: I'm the one who leads the pack.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

Nicole had entered marriage with Walter, a man who never returned her feelings, bound to him through an arrangement made by their families rather than by choice. Even so, she had held onto the quiet belief that time might soften his heart and that one day he would learn to love her. However, that day never came. Instead, he treated her with constant contempt, tearing her down with cruel words and dismissing her as fat and manipulative whenever it suited him. After two years of a cold and distant marriage, Walter demanded a divorce, delivering his decision in the most degrading manner he could manage. Stripped of her dignity and exhausted by the humiliation, Nicole agreed to her friend Brenda's plan to make him see what he had lost. The idea was simple but daring. She would use another man to prove that the woman Walter had mocked and insulted could still be desired by someone else. All they had to do was hire a gigolo. Patrick had endured one romantic disappointment after another. Every woman he had been involved with had been drawn not to him, but to his wealth. As one of the heirs to a powerful and influential family, he had long accepted that this pattern was almost unavoidable. What Patrick wanted was far more difficult to find. He longed to fall in love with a woman who cared for him as a person, not for the name he carried or the fortune attached to it. One night, while he was at a bar, an attractive stranger approached him. Because of his appearance and composed demeanor, she mistook him for a gigolo. She made an unconventional proposal, one that immediately caught his interest and proved impossible for him to refuse.
