Five years later, Effie returns home as a famous contemporary screenwriter. Again, coincidentally, Effie signs a copyright contract with Edwin's company. She was his wife five years ago, and she becomes his subordinate five years later. What is the relationship between them? Ex-husband and ex-wife? Employer and employee? Or anything else?

Their Relationship Chapter 1 As You Wish

In the darksome room, a man was standing in front of the French window and looking deeply at the inky night out there with his brows tightly furrowed.

There was a will that had just been opened on the desk behind the man, and there were only two short lines on the piece of paper, of which the meaning was simple yet shocking.

"President Bennett, is there anything wrong with...the will?" Gale Evans looked at the two lines in horror, his voice growing weaker and weaker.

Edwin Bennett took a deep breath, then turned to look at the will. After a pause for half a second, he ordered coldly, "Find her and arrange the wedding as soon as possible!"

"Sir, do you really want to marry her?"

"Or what?" Edwin curled his lips in an icy arc, saying, "Since my father has arranged so, I won't disappoint him."

"Well...Okay then, I'll arrange it for you."

After Gale left, Edwin's facial expression became even gloomier. He picked up the will and stared at the satirical words on it with a deeper and colder arc upon his mouth. "Effie Fletcher, as you wish, I will marry you!"

At a bar called Blues somewhere in the same city...

Deafening heavy metal music was impacting Effie's eardrums. Frowning and looking around with an anxious expression, she took out her cell phone and kept dialing a number until she saw a man lying on the ground not far away and that several guys were beating and kicking him.

The next second, Effie picked up a beer bottle from the table nearby and rushed over to them.

"Stop it!" She tried to protect the boy, who curled up and covered his head with his blood-stained arms while glaring at those men. "Or I will call the police!"

"Call the police? Haha..."

The thugs burst into laughter as if the girl had just told a joke.

When the boy heard Effie's voice, he burst into tears, saying, "Effie, save me!"

"Herman, my brother, don't be afraid. I'm right here." Effie looked at her younger brother, with distress, then helped him up from the ground. Seeing that the boy's forehead was bleeding, Effie took his hand and ran outwards. "I'm taking you to the hospital."

"Sister and brother..." The men stood in a line and blocked their way. "Great, it'll be easier to settle the matter with an elder around."

"The woman herself is too young. Are you sure she can solve the problem?"

"Too young? Well, from my point of view..." One bald man among the thugs fixed his eyes upon Effie's chest indecently, continuing, "She is mature enough!"

Again, the men burst out laughing.

At the words, Herman Fletcher protected Effie behind him, saying, "Come at me. Don't harm my sister!"

"You? Hehe..." The man grabbed Herman by his hair, jerked it back, then said with a bleak look in his eyes, "Who do you think you are?"

"Let him go!" Effie started at the bald man and threatened him with the beer bottle in hand. "Otherwise, I will pull no punches!"

"Good! Do pull no punches! Go ahead!" The bald man pushed Herman away, turned to Effie, looked at her obscenely, and pointed at the top of his own head, saying, "Strike me right at here!"

Under his threat, Effie involuntarily took a step back. The bald man grabbed her by the wrist and fiercely dragged her towards him. Uncontrollably, the woman's body moved towards the man.

Witnessing what was going on, Herman rushed over like crazy, "Damn it! Don't touch my sister!"

The bald man grabbed Herman by the collar, clenched his fist, and slammed it at him. Suddenly, the beer bottle was smashed on the thug's head, and his face was instantly covered with blood and looked extremely ferocious.

In an instant, everyone on the spot was shocked.

Even Herman could not believe what he had seen and looked at Effie in disbelief.

Effie was stunned. The next second, she dropped the bottle and took Herman's hand to run outwards.

My five-year-old daughter was dying in the ICU, her heartbeat replaced by the continuous, electronic scream of a flatline. I gripped her cold hand, my throat sealed shut by a terror so absolute I couldn't even cry out. I dialed my husband Grayson's private number, the one reserved only for me and his assistants. He declined the call instantly. A second later, a text buzzed against my palm: "In a meeting. Do not disturb. Stop calling." Five miles away, Grayson was at a luxury gala, adjusting his silk tie and laughing with Belle Escobar. He told her I was just being "dramatic" and using our daughter's "fever" as an excuse to avoid the event. He had no idea Effie's heart had already stopped. When I finally reached our penthouse, soaked from the rain and carrying Effie's small socks in a plastic bag, Grayson didn't even look at me. He snapped at me for ruining the hardwood floors and asked if I'd left Effie with the nanny just to "feel sorry for myself." Three days later, while I buried our daughter in a small, lonely ceremony, Grayson was at the Hamptons. Belle posted a photo of him golfing with the caption: "A mental health day with the boys." He didn't even attend the funeral, but he returned home demanding I clear out Effie's room to make a study for Belle's son. The injustice burned through me until there was nothing left. I swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, desperate to join my daughter. But instead of the darkness, I woke up to blinding lights and the scent of Grayson's expensive cologne. I was standing in a ballroom, wearing a blue silk dress I had already burned. Above me, a banner read: "Happy 5th Birthday Kaiden & Effie." I was back, exactly one year before the tragedy. This time, I wasn't going to be the grieving wife. I was going to be their worst nightmare.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, the crinkle of the sanitary paper sounding like thunder in the sterile room. The doctor didn't even look at me as he confirmed the news: the pregnancy was over. My husband, Keyon, didn't answer my call. He just sent an automated text: "In a meeting." When I returned to our cold mansion, I found his iPad glowing with a message from his "muse," Katina. He was throwing her a secret gala tonight-on our third wedding anniversary. He told her he couldn't wait to escape the "boring" and "draining" atmosphere I created at home. Keyon didn't stumble in until 3 AM, smelling of Katina's perfume with a smear of red on his collar. When I handed him the divorce papers, he laughed in my face. He called me a "glorified housekeeper" with no skills and no future, promising I'd be back in three days begging for a subway ticket. He even bet his friends ten thousand dollars that I wouldn't survive a week without his name. He had his assistant cancel my credit cards and block my gate access before I even reached the end of the driveway. He wanted me to starve. He wanted me to crawl. He sat in his office, mocking the "desperate" woman who pawned her three-million-dollar wedding ring for scrap metal just to pay for a meal. I stood on the rainy curb, watching the man I had protected for three years treat my life like trash. He didn't know about the ultrasound I just threw in the bin. He didn't know that while he was calling me "dull," I was the one secretly writing the code that kept his billion-dollar empire from collapsing. As I slid into a cheap Uber, I opened a hidden, encrypted app on my phone. The screen refreshed to a dashboard for an account Keyon didn't know existed. The balance was ten figures long-the accumulated wealth of "Solaris," the world's most elusive tech genius. Keyon thinks he just evicted a parasite, but he's about to find out he just declared war on the only person who can hit "delete" on his entire life.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.
